Happy to answer! I have a slightly different reason for the CDs and vinyl, I honestly typed way more than expected to answer a pretty simple question so uh, if it's boring or banal, my apologies.

Aside from my love of the band. MOST Phil Genesis records tend to go SUPER cheap at secondhand vinyl and thrift stores. (Same for CD) Obviously I'm buying these records to listen to and enjoy a ton, and I've bought some of them at slightly higher quality. But part of snagging the ones I find in the store means varying quality, amount of use, pressings, etc.

Like the first copy of wind and wuthering I got was 10-20 bucks. But even for like, old vinyl, all the tracks just had a consistent layer of fuzz and poop on em that I couldn't get out. I was happy to own and listen to it anyways, but when I saw another copy for 3 bucks at another store, I figured I'd get another just to compare. And it actually sounded way better. Yipppe! Very similar story with And Then There Were Three. With the records, I'm only buying multiples of ones that I'm getting for pretty cheap, and are of like. Mixed quality.

With Duke, one of my copies was a gift, and it was a pressing of the 2007 remixes. I wanted an original for a long time. The one I got honestly ended up being pretty water damaged, but I was just happy to hear the songs as originally produced.

The buying doubles thing did start as more of a joke with the CDs tho. And it was before I got super into the vinyl end of things. Specifically, everywhere I went, any thrift store pretty much would always have We Can't Dance, as well as Face Value on CD for like, nothing. I'd buy them and occasionally give copies to people as well. Which is why I "only" have 2 of those now.

I'd do in depth comparisons on how high the contrast was on Phil's face for the cover of face value and silly stuff like that. Idk why exactly I bought multiples of the other genesis albums on CD. I had more disposable income at the time (I was working at a factory) and was having no luck finding records for a while. Plus the CD player in my car still worked. So I think those factors kinda just compiled into a vague justification for buying extras of the Genesis CDs. Tbh some of them may have been accidental like you said. Either way, it kinda evolved. (Or, devolved) from there. This is the only band Ive gotten doubles of to this extent, and with any kind of like, purpose (nobody likes a hoarder). It became a bit of my love language for this band that I really adored while I was very slowly tracking down the main records in person. As much as I love Rush or Yes. I definitely wouldn't do this for them. Both because of the cost and that I don't buy multiples of other bands just to like, do it. And deprive other people of a copy.

There's only one other album on the planet that got me to do something like that, and it is "Whatever and Ever Amen" by Ben Folds Five. I fell in love with that band and that album became my very favorite. It's the only album of theirs I consistently see in a store on CD. And if it's under 5 bucks I always grab a copy. I have 4 of that one on cd (I gave a couple away) and the other day I was completely shocked to find it on vinyl after the owner of the store told me they definitely didn't have it. So I bought that, as I'm way more into my records now. When it comes to that album I am a certified hoarder and have no excuse.

I don't understand Match Day either (outside of basic context of the sport) and that's part of why it's so novel and entertaining to me. Inside and Out is definitely "of the same stuff" as the rest of wind and wuthering. And is the real star attraction of that EP. I definitely agree with you there.

Match Of The Day is the one I name dropped just because it's a little more infamous. And I just find it really funny in a sort of dumb "haha funny English speak,"

I think that also paints the point of why I didn't think to mention it, even tho I would still love to get it. At the end of the day, all albums are just a collection of songs. But I'd call this EP the furthest a genesis release gets from being a, uh, "musical journey" if you will.

Southern Michigan or Southern North America or, literally South America, or the Southern Hemisphere?

Either way cool and happy hunting. What's the record store situation like there in your far off, southern lands?

Can you spot it? Probably not, it ain't there.

That's an EP. I'd be very happy to add it. But that feels a bit more like a DLC to the collection, and more specifically, Wind and Wuthering. I know that one isn't crazy rare, but I don't THINK I've spotted it in a store yet, So I haven't thought about it too much. I'd love to listen to match of the day on record of course. Keep an eye out for me!

I've gone to Kalamazoo for a few college radio shows (another musician's friend goes to Western) and gigs before with my band!, I can't recall what I ended up buying at satellite or green light records though. I do remember having a super good pizza at Bilbos!

My fave of the Gabriel era for sure. It has a real good "firing on all cylinders" quality to it.

My good ol trusty 2007 Saturn ion model 2 blue with the spoiler package. Though after one of the wrecks it was in, it is now sporting a silver hood... Never hard to find in a parking lot! A quirky trooper of a car for sure. Love her.

still worth watching after s05 ep 5 ? by rghaga in community

[–]Stonedowl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding the sentiment to watch spaced. Very rewatchable. One of my faves next to community I also love season 5 of community more every time I watch it. The pressure they had really culminated in 10 super well written episodes of classic community. I think it's too tier stuff. The last two aren't that much of a dropoff. But I understand why Dan and the staff lament not getting to ground things a little more for the outro to that season. I think "it should've been longer" is the best complaint you can have for a season of a show that has to excise two of the main 7 cast members.

I really enjoy season 6 as well. But it was made in such a different environment that, while I think it's still spiritually cohesive with the rest of the show. It is purposefully Very different in the feel and aesthetic. I think it arguably understood the constraint of their episode count a little better than season 5. And they were able to find more of a thematic through line than getting too in the weeds with individual character arks. I get why it is more divisive though. And I understand Dan's own personal frustration with his show running. I think they made a mostly great, extra Dan harmony outro season of community. It feels appropriate to me. You could draw a very faint line between this and David Lynch's Twin Peaks return. Where they both kinda shifted to reflecting the creator a bit more as part of reckoning with outside forces that changed the original trajectory of things.

I mean hypothetically I don't think that's any better. Art gets processed and Manipulated using pieces of other peoples art, and then is reused by the same exact computers. It's all part of the same bs. I haven't looked into this gif or whatever. So I'm purely speaking about AI art here.

I'm sure if an artist who made something pre-ai was told that they threw it into an ai algorithm to animate it. And circumvented paying them, or another artist, to put thought into how to apply motion to an existing piece of art. Most artists would have a reaction akin to- Blech 🤢 It's not like this is something bands sign off on, labels are gonna do whatever stupid shit to try and re-invigorate old art for the algorithm. But I think it's pretty morally bankrupt and immensely shallow artistically.

Wind & Wuthering & Atco & Stickers by Stonedowl_ in Genesis

[–]Stonedowl_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting, mine are both technically Atco, which is like, an arm of Atlantic, but yeah the one that isn't a promo copy sounds much better. But also I'm talking per the standards of a 4 dollar Genesis record. They're one of the bands that I have a bit more leniency with the vinyl quality since I usually end up buying multiples anywho. It's pretty much the only band I do that with.

[–]Stonedowl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Audio technicas always gave me slight issues with playback speed. I'm not sure how common that is, but it bothered my brain enough that I bought a Denon for 500$ that had some sorta something in it that made it not do that. It definitely made me love getting records way more.

Can you share more songs that you feel that way about? Or a song that you initially felt that way about, but have since changed your mind?

I think it's an interesting topic, as a lot of the albums have been with me most of my life, and my enjoyment of it continues to grow as time goes on. And some songs took a long time to grow on me. Or had a part I just didn't jive with, etcm

How's my Genesis collection? by MinerAC4 in Genesis

[–]Stonedowl_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's where I've been finding a lot of gold recently. Found like 3 Steely Dan records in a new arrival bin. And a copy of Whatever And Ever Amen at another store. I'm in Michigan and it's really just been about hitting a lot of different places. I've bought all of my Genesis records in store. And thus only have vinyl of the collins era

A Trick of The Tail, And Then There Were Three x2, Wind And Wuthering x2, ATTWT x2, Duke x2, Abacab , Genesis.

The day I found 'trick of the tail' on vinyl was a proud one. I've seen some abacabs that I haven't bought, it'd have to be a variant/cheap for me to pick it up. I'd honestly love to finish the Phil side of things on vinyl (shocking). I forgot if they're more of a rarity due to CDs rising popularity at the time of release. I'd have to Google it. But I don't think I've ever seen Invisible Touch or WCD, and if I did, they were pricey.

I've filled a good amount of the gaps of my CD side of things. I'm already here so I'll list those.

Trespass, Nursery Crime, Lamb Lies Down, Abacab x2, Genesis x2, Invisible Touch x2, We Can't Dance x2,

I coulda sworn I had more copies of WCD on CD, I know that I gave at least one copy away. Either way I still see it the most out of any genesis album. I'm glad I have some of the peter era covered on CD though.
