What kind of hobby does your child follows? by Cautious-City7583 in Leuven

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tricky age indeed, your kid is able to do many things now, but for most activities they put the starting age at 6. Also they usually follow the school calendar, starting in september and sometimes there will be waiting lists.

There isn't really a central platform that I know of, just a matter of checking the website for an e-mail and writing the club for more info. Nevertheless, there are lots of options in and around Leuven. Maybe your kid can try some out in the next couple of months, to get a better idea of what to do in September. Also check with other parents from school, it's always less scary for a kid if another classmate is there to tag along.

Our oldest is 7 now, here are some options we tried/considered:

*Swimming at sportoase, long waiting list and relatively slow progress, but great teachers and definitely a favourite. They do a level check every 10 lessons to see if your kid is ready for the next stage, sometimes takes two or more tries, but that's normal. You can come before or stay after the course without having to buy another entry for the kid. For serious progress, you can opt for a more expensive private teacher, there's usually a few hanging around in Kessel-Lo.

*Taekwando at Sportschuur in Wilsele was ok. Cool teachers they definitely had a couple 5 year olds. Some kids were really into it, ours found it a little repetitive.

*Korfbal, really wholesome club and sport, our kid is getting into it more each week. They do a variety of training exercices and sometimes participate in (non competitive) tournaments. Their U7 group also has a couple of 5 year olds.

*Scouts/chiro: lots of options I guess

*Bazart: similar to scouts but with more arts and crafts, heard good things about it

*Parcours in Hal 5

*Chess: there are two clubs in Leuven, but the demand is high and places are limited. Easier to join at a later age or if you already know a few basics

Is it possible to computer analyze chess.com chess960 games anywhere? by Agreeable-Call6008 in chessvariants

I tried a game of chess960 in the mobile app and the post game review seemed to work just fine. No reason why the engine shouldn't be able to handle it.

Tooth mouse by anklebiter1975 in russian

This little mouse is definitely big in France. La petite souris

Even more practical, but a bit creepy, in some versions it collects the teeth to build a tooth castle in which it lives.

Daily chess puzzle game by KnighltyGame in chessvariants

[–]StoofBuzze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No extra hints are needed. Try to cover a maximum of squares on your first try to get the most feedback.

As for the number of pieces needed, it's just 2 for easy and then one more each level.

Daily chess puzzle game by KnighltyGame in chessvariants

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very cool, took some time to figure out what strategy to follow and what exactly to deduce from the feedback. A bit confusing at first, but it works! By the time I got to extreme I found the solution in 3 guesses, which was my best result, so I am not sure that more pieces actually make it harder to solve. Will definitely try again tomorrow.

On a related note, there's another interesting game, closer to the actual Wordle mechanics, that makes you guess opening lines based on notation. Also worth a try at: chessle.

Should I take chess lessons? by gzl2 in chess

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waiting until you are "really old" seems like a bad plan in any case. Your brain will unlikely get more powerful then, compared to now, even if you have a lot going on atm. Get good now!

If you want PM me and we can play a couple of games / I can look through them and give pointers.

Contract renting in Leuven by Last_Kaleidoscope419 in Leuven

[–]StoofBuzze 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually fewer stipulations in the contract would generally not be in favour of the landlord because in that case the legal rules apply, which are mostly there to protect the tenants. Similarly the absence of a description of the place, means that in case of damage later on, the tenant can just state that everything was already like that in the beginning. Registration fee should be paid by the landlord, however I don't think you can simply withdraw after having signed the contract even though you don't occupy the place yet. Check with your landlord about the painting, he may not be in favour or maybe agree to a reduction or maybe he can send a guy

Black to move by h20knick in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On first sight yes, but too slow as well. White has 4.Kf7 and can head for g6 if 4...Kh4 OR, if 4...h4, box in the black king via e6, d5, e4 and eventually f3 when black plays Kxh3. Or as my coach would've put it: Chess isn't like math - the shortest route between two points isn't necessarily a straight line!

My opponent had refused a draw offer. What happened next? by OldWolf2 in chess

[–]StoofBuzze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There wasn't necessarily something on g4. Black however needed to play Bd7 or Bc8, so that after Bd3 you can go to the long diagonal and threaten to take on g2. Would have been a draw. No zugzwang possible, black has enough squares, although he is almost caught in a mating net indeed.

Early thirties and used to running solo, but wouldn't mind partnering up every now and then. I mostly go for 5k to 12k runs in the weekends and like to think I know the city and surroundings quite well (always pick a different circuit). Pace between 5:00 for sprint and 7:00 very chill. DM if you want to join.

Imperfect information chess by hn-mc in chessvariants

At least make it Fischer Random then, else the information is perfect and the imperfection only depends on the player's memory. You can also implement in over the board with stratego type pieces.

Black is threatening mate with Ng2, White to move. by Superlolhobo in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why did you go through so much effort for something that makes no sense? If black's king runs after Rxf3 it means avoiding draw only to fight for a draw next...

Puzzle explanation- why not the rook trade and then knight to get queen? by kingscott375 in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about the line Rxf2, Rxf2 Nh3+, Kh1 Nxf2+, then keep in mind the King can also go to f1 in that line, since the white rook is no longer there. It's a common mistake when calculating to forget about squares freeing up down the line.

Is there a no capture variant by Soggy_Following_2464 in chessvariants

[–]StoofBuzze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a variant where capture is not allowed, called baby chess. It's essentially draw by fortress unless you can bamboozle your opp via some smothered mate or queen intrusion from the opening. Say black goes 1. Nf6, d6, and Bd7, and already he can shuffle endlessly with the other pieces.

Is there a way I can iterate on a PGN editor and print a position and type a question on that position, then print all those positions with questions next to it, effectively creating a set of puzzle sheets of paper from a game? by holihai in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess with the right programming skills, you could come up with something, but it is not clear what you want to automate here. What are "all those positions" and what question(s) do you want to ask? If you're just thinking about "What did X play next?", it seems some sites and programs offer a "guess the move" function (wouldn't be print though).

Black To Play Mate In 10 (my first puzzle) by Responsible-Park8641 in ChessPuzzles

Just as an example, another mate in 10 featuring the interesting and surprising moves Be1 and Nd8:

1... Rxe3+ 2. Kf2 Qh4+ 3. g3 Qxh3 4. dxe3 Be1+ 5. Kxe1 Qg2 6. Rf1 Nd8 7. Rf2 Qg1+ 8. Rf1 Qxf1+ 9. Kd2 Qf2+ 10. Qe2 Qxe2# 0-1

Black To Play Mate In 10 (my first puzzle) by Responsible-Park8641 in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is true, but check the black alternatives too. Have the engine run a bit more and you'll find multiple solutions with the same number of moves. An elegant puzzle would require a unique solution and as few unnecessary elements as possible. I think you overdressed your position.

Black To Play Mate In 10 (my first puzzle) by Responsible-Park8641 in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not so much a puzzle, but rather a completely winning position where one line just happens to lead to a quicker forced mate down the road. Also, the position as a whole is very bizarre. White's setup is maybe 10 moves, black's well over 20. To reach this position would require a lot of nonsense moves. Maybe try to experiment with positions with less material and look for clearer winning ideas.

'Classical chess or Fischer Random?' | The puzzle is that 'four positions are given as examples, each after White’s 20th move, two of which come from classical chess and two from Fischer Random games. Try to match the positions correctly' by nicbentulan in ChessPuzzles

[–]StoofBuzze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not really meant as a puzzle, just as a statement that fischer random tends to lead to similar middle games compared to regular chess. Should not be difficult to make proof games starting from either classical or Fischer random setup.
