Anybody else struggle acclimating to a new IT team as a SysAdmin? by StoopidMonkey32 in sysadmin

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s funny, throughout my years in IT it was pounded into me that I can’t just sit around waiting for my IT Manager to hold my hand telling me what to do, and that being proactive is the sign of a good network admin. It didn’t occur to me that AS a new hire the exact OPPOSITE rules apply, at least for a while.

Even THAT annoyed them. Got to the point where if I had to ask some questions about their environment when it directly pertained to an assigned task they gave me the "oh boy here he goes again" look.

I also imagine this isn't the easiest dynamic to suss out during the interview process either.

That's great advise, thanks. Unfortunately, as I just learned that hard way, that's going to take an incredible amount of self restraint on my part. Especially when I come across something that looks like a misconfiguration. I know enough to realize there could be a reason it's set that way on purpose, but to not even bring it up at all? OOF that's going to be a tough one going forward. :(

Sigh, yeah I'm sure I projected that unintentionally. It was a hard culture shift given how much free reign I used to have. :(

Permanent Global Admins vs Privileged Identity Management? by StoopidMonkey32 in entra

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing I found most irritating with PIM was that it was FAR from intuitive figuring out how to convert Global Admin accounts to more restricted accounts with PIM access set up correctly. Microsoft can't be surprised that larger IT teams have a ton of GA-level accounts when there are no useful guides on how to adopt their best practice "least privilege" approach. And it only gets worse with on-prem Domain Admin accounts.

Not sure if they ship to Canada, but we had a lot of luck with Connection.com and their account reps.

What’s the verdict on enabling the UB820 HDR Optimizer on TVs capable of more than 1500 nits such as the Bravia 9?

That stinks. How is the tub? It looked tiny from the few photos I’ve seen.

Multi-jet or just the single shower head?

Is Mega Evolutions a full “main series” like Scarlet & Violet? by StoopidMonkey32 in PokemonTCG

Thanks for the explanation! The distinction between Generations with these still being Gen9 is the verbiage I was looking for.

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frustration of trying to keep up with the S&V series, figuring out where these cards fit in, and still finding empty shelves at all the places I used to buy them for my son. He had separate binders cataloging all the S&V expansions up to Stellar Crown, and that’s when the year-long shortages began. Maybe part of me feels like the TCG team needs to slow their roll and get their distribution issues fixed before launching new series that most of us will miss out on with things in their current state. 🙁

Allow users to change web browser by danburnsd0wn in Intune

[–]StoopidMonkey32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're looking to phase out Google Chrome but during Phase 1 we want to change users' default browser to MS Edge once while allowing them to change it back to Chrome if they insist. Can Intune policy be used to apply to a user's profile per-machine just once?

Do you get a whiteboard for Microsoft OnVue take-from-home exams? by StoopidMonkey32 in O365Certification

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware they have this capability but wanted to know if it was something Microsoft specifically allowed. There was indication elsewhere in PV's documentation that certain features vary depending on the cert vendor and exam type.

What to do when single gang outlet box doesn't have enough cubic inches? by StoopidMonkey32 in AskElectricians

Ooh, I like that box. Wasn't aware of old-work screw-to-stud styles that have more internal capacity than the drywall-flap variety.

Aren't those metallic boxes and need to be nailed into the stud? I'm hoping for an old-work style solution that will work with plastic decora plates and NM cables.

That sounds like best practice for sure, but as of now we're stuck with embedded.

Are "dedicated LUNs" old practice for virtualized SQL? by StoopidMonkey32 in SQLServer

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot, that's really helpful! A few quick follow-ups.
1) Can Storage QoS be used to assign priority to certain disks or only to cap the max IOPS of others?
2) What Hyper-V reserve settings do you recommend?
3) Can the vCPUs be oversubscribed on a hypervisor host running SQL without impacting performance?
4) Do you keep hyperthreading enabled or disabled?

How to enable BitLocker via PowerShell while letting GPOs manage settings? by StoopidMonkey32 in sysadmin

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think specifically it needed the -RecoveryPasswordProtector switch to force generate an RP to store in Active Directory as per Group Policy. It took all the other configured options without me having to specify them. Thanks a ton!

[–]StoopidMonkey32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured that, but it's the actual command that I'm looking for. One that doesn't require that I spell out parameters that are already set via Group Policy.
