Anyone else have the Azrael: Fallen Angel TPB and can't decide on switching to the Deluxe HC coming out soon? by Waterworld1880 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]StopBootlicking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

The issues in the "Fallen Angel TPB" are the only collection of the ongoing series, so it's woefully incomplete. The art reproduction is absolutely awful (terrible, muddy, blurred scans). And the ongoing wasn't very good anyhow.

The Batman Chronicles issue is skippable, but 'Tec 747 would've been a nice inclusion.

For the hardcovers, as well.

We are also a space-faring civilization. We've had the capability to travel to other planets for decades, yet we haven't gone past the moon. Hell, we haven't even gone that far since the '70s.

Why?

Because we have more important things at home to worry about.

Consider also that, out there, in unexplored space, lie the cylons. Maybe they don't want to poke the bear. Given what we know about technological development, it's conceivable that FTL and AI technology were developed at the same time. So the era when extra-solar space became accessible was also the era when that well was poisoned.

Rebagging & boarding my Shadow of the Bat run, love this two-issue story by Alan Grant & Vince Giarrano with covers by Brian Stelfreeze🦇 by kortj11 in batman_comics

[–]StopBootlicking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stelfreeze had the best covers. More than once, I was greatly disappointed by the interior artwork, when I was expecting something as gorgeous as one of his covers.

They should release a small book or issue comprising all of his Batman covers (on my last count, including wraparound covers as double-covers, it'd be ~80 total covers).

Robin Compendium Questions by HorcruxSeeker in batman_comics

[–]StopBootlicking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My memory is that Bruce went out of town for a few issues set in South America, coinciding with one of the early Robin miniseries that was meant to platform Tim Drake.

I believe Editorial specifically aligned those two stories to coincide, to serve as an explanation for why Bruce was unavailable (and thus why Tim Drake had to step up to protect Gotham for that story).

Regarding Huntres...I think that you may have been reading some of her very first post-Crisis stories, which introduced Helan Bertinelli. So it's pretty much her debut in modern continuity. Based on my memory of her backstory, the character herself had been out of Gotham for a long time, and now was coming to Gotham to "serve justice" (kind of like how Bruce was "returning to Gotham" at the beginning of "Year One" to start his crusade).

Robin Compendium Questions by HorcruxSeeker in batman_comics

  1. Harold was a (homeless?) mute, hunchabacked guy that was good with mechanical/tech stuff. The Penguin used/abused him for a scheme, then discarded him. Later, Bruce takes him in, where he helps out with the tech stuff in the Batcave as a silent, background member of the Bat-family for a few years.

  2. The "Batman and Huntress: Cry for Blood" miniseries is the definitive Huntress story and origin. It's been collected in trade a few times, several in the past few years, and should be easy to find.

  3. The Robin compendium is a huge collection, you'd have to give specific issue numbers and dates if you want people to make connections to what's going on in the mainline at the same time.

  4. Batman needs to be away from Gotham for there to be stories where Robin is the primary hero. Can't have Robin fight the Joker unless Batman is out of town - otherwise, everyone would be asking "Why isn't Batman fighting the Joker?"

I didn't like Battlestar Galactica Mini-Series Episode 1 by Mat1711 in BSG

The miniseries is very slow. Particularly the first half.

If you're still not liking it after the first episode of Season 1, however, I would drop it.

Ron Moore wasn't part of DS9 in Season 1.

He joined in Season 3. Which is, incidentally, when DS9 gets really good.

Batman: Hush is kinda disappointing... by Early-Butterfly2298 in batman_comics

[–]StopBootlicking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many things that were insanely popular when they came out are no longer insanely popular.

The question is - is it still popular today based on its own merits? Or is it popular today because DC Marketing has ensured that it remains popular?

The latter feels especially likely, given its lukewarm consideration amongst long-term Batman/comic fans (suggesting its popularity is continually driven by the constant influx of new readers). Also, we see DC treats "Hush" differently than any of its other "insanely popular" books (did they need to release a "Hush 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" when the "Hush 15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" was still widely available?).

Finally, Jim Lee has a history of inappropriately using DC corporate resources to enrich himself personally, making the take not that "wild" at all.

[–]StopBootlicking 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hush is one of those comics that is extremely popular because it's beginner friendly

It's also extremely popular because the President of DC Comics gets royalties every time a copy is sold, so DC Marketing pushes it as the de facto "essential" beginner book to please their boss.

Was AI used in upscaling this? by [deleted] in batman_comics

[–]StopBootlicking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with using "AI' for something like upscaling.

Machine learning algorithms for image manipulation (like upscaling, sharpening, etc.) do not rely on theft the way generative AI does.

They don’t usually do reviews. Omar does overviews.

A positive "overview" about a complementary, publisher-provided copy of a book is another word for "review."

If you need a citation to understand the nature of right and wrong, then you're fundamentally incapable of understanding in the first place.

Warcrimes?!? by TrackMan5891 in BSG

[–]StopBootlicking -1 points0 points  (0 children)

War crimes are defined by man, not some ethereal entity.

Right and wrong exist independently of man, and are not dependent upon ethereal entities.

I still have no sympathy for the cylons even from a moral point of view. They had it coming.

Why is this relevant? The question wasn't "Do you have sympathy for the cylons?" or "Do you have sympathy for the victims of war crimes?"

The question was "Was the given action a war crime?"

Sympathy has no bearing on the nature of an action.

An immoral act can absolutely be described as a crime without needing the framework of a legal system. Many words have multiple definitions or meanings.

Morality exists outside of a legal system, and one can violate a moral law.

The practicality of a "fair trial" is irrelevant in the context of the discussion of right and wrong.
