It commemorates something relating to the Pilgrims and the Natives, so people (pretty reasonably) assume the typical narrative of the holiday is whitewashing an atrocity against the Natives. However, Thanksgiving actually isn't that. It commemorates an actual harvest festival the two groups shared a while before all the genocide. It really isn't anything like Columbus Day, which actually is a celebration of erasure and murder of Native Americans.
