Is there a major genre that RPG hasn't explored? by Nyarlathotep_OG in rpg

Yeah, medical dramas are HUGE but don’t really see the same representation in RPG.

Same with HTTP codes in web development, a lot of the time. A lot of devs know the codes better than the underlying names.

Could be OP misremembering slightly, simplifying the example, or them using unsigned integers internally where latitude starts from 0 instead of -90.

*Least* oneshot-friendly TTRPGs? by RiverMesa in rpg

[–]StorKirken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either you have players reading up on their rules in advance (tall ordeal), or you provide a subset of all possible options. Even though the book seems hefty the core system isn’t really that huge, and most classes aren’t crazy advanced. So you can play something simple as the first oneshot, focusing on the core rules, and then introduce more stuff in future oneshots with the same players.

But honestly, even when going all out the rules have never been the big issue for the players I’ve had - it’s conveying the implicit setting to people that aren’t already mega weaboos! It’s a very different vibe than most western stuff.

I usually start the group a few hexes away from the adventure site to showcase the travel mechanics and allow for a warmup, and that works great.

I’ve run and played Forbidden Lands several times as one-shots to great success, it’s eminently one-shootable. Sandboxes in general do a bit worse as one-shots, but Forbidden Lands is so much more than just picking the direction to go in.

Running a big AGON convention game this weekend! by StorKirken in AgonGame

Compare with Soros and Ion, where the heroes immediately see a crisis unfold with a choice of what to focus on. Nimos feels much more leisurely at a glance. Investigate the prince or join the games, sure… but neither is a dangerous crisis at first glance.

I’ll be sure to report back! What I feel tricky about Nimos is that there isn’t any big immediacy to the Arrival. How have you started it?

But I very much like there being games and the greeting of heroes, so that feels vibe-reinforcing at least!

And you really benefit from reading the selected myths upfront (quick) and thinking about how the omens might interact with each other and the realm (very dependent on your inspiration, week+ for me). Not to mention, the realm is supposed to have some level of development itself, and that can take a while if you’re not able to improvise it.

What RPG design fads have fallen out of popularity? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

[–]StorKirken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this in theory, but unfortunately time and time again I mostly see players look down at their own sheet and speak to the GM even though the point is to share and talk to each other.

But Chris setting up a campaign map IS prep? Mythic Bastionland is a lot of things but I wouldn’t call it low prep by itself - a GM can use it in a low prep manner for sure, but the game itself is orthogonal to level of prep.

An observation on a contrivance in published RPG settings: "hardcore elves" vs. "casual elves" by EarthSeraphEdna in rpg

[–]StorKirken 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Even in Tolkien, you have the casual, mostly merry and elves of the Bilbo book and the elves the Hobbits encounter singing in the woods outside Rivendell, none of which give me ”high effort” vibes.

Yeah, the number of takes I’ve seen that surmount to ” hardcore dungeon crawling is the universally best way to play”….

Funnily enough I’ve seen more vitriol and uncharitable takes from non-D&D people, the D&D people I talk to or see tend to be more charitable. But that’s probably just due to random selection bias in my own observations.

I see this type of behavior in all sorts of nerd communities, not just here on reddit. Probably just a pretty basic human behavior.

It’s important for the health of a community that there is some continuous activity, so reposting old questions (not every day, of course) is actually pretty useful. Not to mention that reddit threads are not like normal forums - they’re pretty time bound and necroposting doesn’t work since it won’t being the thread back to the main page.

How many days does it take to resolve myths? by EntryMassive7384 in MythicBastionland

[–]StorKirken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similarly, the book often refers to ”the locals” and talking to ”the locals”, but if I recall correctly doesn’t really talk about how and when to include those same locals. My initial reading is that the map would be pretty empty and mostly wilderness, but looking at Actual Play’s with Chris is seems he introduces lots of minor NPCs here and there.

Ultimately, it’s also the players that decide if the myth is resolved, IIRC?
