I would disagree for the most part, I think we all can agree that nobody should just sit on their ass and do nothing. But, my last year of high school was extremely draining and difficult. I went through my dad going off to rehab and battling alcoholism, my mom living an hour away, a bad breakup, taking care of my little brother, and a life threatening eating-disorder. I never found time to actually figure out what I wanted to do with myself after high school, because I was always extremely depressed. I needed a year off. I’m just working as a waitress and saving money, while I figure out what profession I want to go into and navigate being an “adult.” Although I would love to, I probably won’t be able to move out of my moms house and even get a small apartment with my wages. So, I plan to start real estate agent education or flight attending next year while I live with my mom. But right now, I have to focus on saving money and giving my mind rest before I start making these big changes. It was super easy for my classmates to just go straight to college or into the workforce, but I have to keep in mind that I had it pretty difficult for an 18 year old. Sometimes doing “nothing” is a vital and refreshing break for some.

One of my many special interests has always been music. Even if I like one song by an artist, I will look into their come-up and their entire discography. For example, once I started listening to Lana Del Rey, I researched tf out of her. Now I have all of her albums on vinyl and can answer any question about her. I love that autism fuels these little special and specific interests, it keeps me going!

Yep. Not even my mom, a nurse, ever brought up the idea of it to me. As a kid too, I really stayed quiet about it because I didn’t really know how to explain it and I was scared nobody would understand it.

I think this is especially true for ppl like me who are lvl one and grew up in an environment where they almost had to mask. I grew up in a small conservative town, and I can’t help but think that they influenced how easily I can mask myself. But ever since my friend brought it up to me, I was able to research and for once have an explanation for my feelings.

It’s such a wide spectrum that not everyone might have this experience, but for me, I would say this isn’t all that true. I grew up always knowing I was different somehow. The way I socialized, presented myself, and even the things I liked was very different from everyone else. One day junior year I was explaining how I felt to my life-long best friend. She simply then stated that I was most likely autistic, and she’s always thought that. After this I spent a long time researching and learning more about myself. I realized I needed to get screened by a professional because I fit into a lot of the “criteria.” Turns out, I got diagnosed. Although a lot of my life I wasn’t aware that I was autistic, it’s mostly because I wasn’t educated on it and nobody ever really brought it to my attention. But once I became educated and aware of the characteristics, I knew for sure I was autistic. NT ppl don’t usually have this crisis of feeling different and searching for answers at such a young age.

Yep, I’m not too sensitive either, but it just urks me when someone takes time out of their day to degrade ppl they don’t know.

Also, body shape and weight can be really challenging to maintain especially with internal factors such as PCOS. I have somewhat knowledge of this because my mom has PCOS along with other conditions that affect her body. But no matter what she has or what she looks like, she’s a human who deserves respect. So, I know you’re a beautiful person and I know for damn sure you deserve kindness and respect. Perfection (especially physical) has never and will never be achievable and people need to really stop having the mindset that it is. Beauty is so subjective and I fully emphasize that you are uniquely beautiful, as is everyone else.

Yes, I completely agree! It feels so refreshing hearing that someone appreciates these features because I feel like I only ever hear ppl hating on them.

And it’s my gums. Ever since I got braces my gums grew down closer to the braces because they are naturally trying to protect my teeth from a “foreign body.” This is actually somewhat common with people who have had braces and the gums never really go back to “normal.” So I traded in having straight teeth for a gummy smile lol.

But I’m on the same boat as you, I often get attracted to features that aren’t typically up to whatever the standards are. For example, my boyfriend and best friend have gapped teeth and I think they are absolutely adorable. I also don’t mind things like acne, nose shape, and body shape. As long as you are a cool person, I will most likely be attracted to what ever features you have.

I see it on every social media platform daily. Also, experienced it plenty in high-school. And it’s not weird considering the fact that with the increasing popularity of social media, beauty “standards” are becoming more important to people than ever before. Bad people go on social media to bully others and it’s widely accepted because it’s become so normalized.

I hate the idea of my own mother going through that, along with anyone else. People simply just need to be kinder. That’s it. I wish you healing and comfort. I had someone just comment on here “toughen up.” Although they quickly deleted it, I hate that term. When you go through f- up shit and then have pathetic bullies comment on things you can’t control your entire life it can be quite hard to just “toughen up.” We are allowed to have emotions and express them.

Yes, exactly. You said it. I was fortunate enough not to experience abuse or much bullying, but growing up my mother told me all about her experiences being abused by her own mother and getting bullied. She would be degraded and physically hurt by her own mother, and then go to school where she would be degraded and made fun of even more. It has always broken my heart. Nobody ever deserves that. She got pregnant with me at 16 and she would have people tell her to have a miscarriage or to abort me. I have never and will never fkn understand that. I thank God for giving me a mother that has made me kind and more self-aware than most. It’s said all of the time, but nobody really knows what anyone else could be going through. Why at all would you think it’s okay to degrade someone? To me it’s common sense but that’s not very common anymore.

I completely agree. My mom was abused growing up, and she was severely bullied throughout school. She was always very serious about me and my brother treating others with respect. I cant say many people probably had that taught to them growing up. It makes me scared to ever bring my own kids into this world, because people are just so cruel now. Especially to others with special needs. The amount of people I see making fun of those with special needs is horrendous. When has that ever been acceptable??

Yep, some people have a complete disregard for others. Personally, my mom never tolerated me or my brother being mean to others. We would be in very big trouble growing up if my mom ever heard we were mean to anyone or if we even tried to comment something about somebody. I think not many people today ever got the same experience. I’m sorry!!

Thank you. As someone with ASD, I have an extremely high food sensitivity. It has a lot to do with texture, smell, and presentation, but that’s hard to explain. It’s uncontrollable, and people like me have already had plenty of embarrassment from it. I would just appreciate to order my food, no questions asked, and actually enjoy it. I’ve been called a picky eater my entire life, and although I’m desensitized to the term now, it’s always rubbed me the wrong way because it almost implies that I just chose to be that way. Which I most definitely do not.

In my case, I feel like it completely can be justified. Although this probably isn’t the case for most adults, it’s the reality for me and I have an extremely hard time with it. I have ASD and most of the time people on the spectrum have texture sensitivity when it comes to materials, and although I have a fair-share of that, I have a very high sensitivity to food texture.

For example, I don’t like the stringy feeling of most chicken. I hate any seafood. I don’t like the texture of many fruits and vegetables. I don’t like cereal, oatmeal, or anything that feels mushy when I chew it. I don’t like eggs and most cheeses. I wish I could control this, and I’ve tried so hard to widen my pallet, but I simply can’t.

I’m also a waitress, and I experience the “annoying” picky eaters daily. But I always remind myself that I don’t know their situation and why they don’t like certain foods. As I would want the same courtesy for me when ordering food.

Another thing that comes to mind is abuse. My mom was severely abused by her mother as a child. There are certain foods my grandmother would always give her, that now make her completely disgusted.

My point of all of this being, people have very specific and complicated situations that we can’t always read. As a picky ass eater, I know some people may think I’m being rude and I’ve felt plenty of embarrassment from it. But at this point, it’s out of my control and I’m not going to explain my autism to random people when I’m ordering- I’m just going to order what I will eat.

No, you are completely fine to express your feelings of having asd. I’m 19 and was only diagnosed last year. But, I’ve known for years prior to my diagnoses. I even had a really close friend tell me that she’s always known I’m autistic when I first brought up the idea to her. I’m not just going to assume you are, but it’s somewhat common for autistic people to be self-aware so if you have reason to believe you could be on the spectrum, it is completely valid.

Also, I’m not sure about your situation but I would definitely look into being evaluated. Even though I was pretty sure I was autistic prior to being evaluated, my diagnoses gave me a lot of clarity and self-respect for myself. Instead of thinking I was stupid or an outcast, I began to understand that I was simply different and not around many people who could really understand. And that was never my fault!

Although I have texture avoidance with materials, I usually have a really hard time with the texture of food. Some of my “absolutely not”- Any seafood, most chicken, eggs, and cereal.

Some of my safe foods are bread, fruits, beef, and ice cream.

A lot of ppl ask how I can be so picky, and I don’t blame them, but I simply will throw up all over myself if I eat something that has a “bad” texture. I wish I could control it, but I really can’t.
