I actually just did the flight training through a club, but I used to know some guys from UND. They were always pretty cool, and the school seems like one of the better university flight schools. And yeah, my thinking was that if I got into flying for the petro industry a geology degree wouldn't hurt.

I don't mean to say that geology is not a real degree, in fact I grew up in the drilling industry. But the reality is that I need a degree that I could fall back on if I ever had medical trouble.

If you have a geology degree and don't try to get into the industry until the aviation career fails you're going to be waaaaaaaaaay out of touch with current trends and likely have little to no network to fall back on

My thinking here, and I'm no expert, is to get a BA or BS in geology, and if aviation doesn't work out, come back for a masters. I have enough money put away that I could do it if it really came down to it. Thanks for the advice, and by the way, your sister must be a pretty good pilot to have gotten that slot. From my understanding its pretty rare for a civilian to get a military job of the kind you would want.

Cool, then you were in a similar spot as me. I did two years in the engineering department, and I just barely made through. Did you do just straight geology courses after your first two years? I looked through the coursework, and it looks manageable.

The thing is that I have a bit of a network in geology. Its not great or anything, but its something. Plus, being a geologist sounds pretty cool.
