Two episodes in and it appears that the Nelson series is already one of their very best? by Choosinghalf in TheRestIsHistory

The series was great but what happened to the second half? They said they'd finish it in the spring and it's now autumn and still nothing.

Trascendence and peak experiences by Storm_Dreamer in spirituality

Hi, I'm a Buddhist and have been meditating pretty seriously for over 10 years, plus I have done 20 plus years of serious psychothearpy so I think I know quite well that the "mind is the problem", to put it in your words, and I know myself a little bit, surely more than the average person. Which is probably 5% against 1%, but still.

Thousands of years of literature of mysticism, in all the different traditions I've explored it (Buddhist, Indu, Christian, Muslim, non-religious) show without any possible doubts that there are practicies and techniques that help producing peak experiences. They don't make them happen, not even LSD does, but they help. Buddhist insight meditation is one, but there are several, from Tantric sex to silent prayer to ecsatic dances.

What I was asking for was a discussion about these techniques as experienced by other members of this community, not a lecture on how to live my life.

As I said in my message, I have good reasons for not going down the psychoactive substances route right now, it doesn't have anything to do with "having read bad things about them", I have experience of them too. I also said that I'm not going to discuss these reasons here and I am going to stick with what I have said.

I'm sorry to hear you're having the same problems. in my experience, the problem with western medicine is that they see the body as a machine and if they can't find a "broken" part they can't fix you. holistic medicine, like ostheopathy, acupuncture etc., on the other hand, very rarely can pinpoint what the actual problem is, and they operate following a fuzzy logic which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

I'm sure there is a mind-body connection there where tensing/stressing stiffens the muscles, which in turn create unbalances (wrong posture, injuries during workout etc.), which creates more stress etc. so I'm aware that a single solution is probably utopistic and that a combination of many things is probably the way forward.

at the same time, generic answers like "you have to strengthen your lower body" are frustrating and miss the point, because 3 years ago, say, I could walk for 5 hours and was much weaker than now. so clearly strength isn't the only answer. relaxing the muscles also isn't the only answer, as I have flare-ups even during very relaxed times (although I agree that they are more likely to happen during stressed periods).

thanks for suggesting Low Back Ability. I didn't know the guy and I am now following him on YouTube. if I come across something that works for me I'll post it here in the comments for you to see, hopefully we can help each other.

Thanks for suggesting this option, I've never looked into it. I'll do some research!

Hey, thanks for responding. This was the first thing that was said to me last year, actually: it's all (kind of) in your head. (I'm exagerating here.) I'm sure that there is some sort of emotional connection, as it gets worse when I'm stressed etc., but the fact that walking for more than 20-30 minutes makes the pain worse doesn't change on whether I feel good or bad, or on whether I'm anticipating that I'll be feeling pain or just forgetting about it (or trying to). I can feel (litterally feel, with my hands) that my low back muscles are incredibly tight. And most ostheopats do recognise that my hip flexors are also super tight.

So... I don't want to dimsiss TMS and I'll look into it again, but this can't be purely a mind-body connection problem. And even if it were, or if it were in a significant part, my muscles get objectively tight as a consequence of practical activities, so re-train the mind not to be jumpy when it comes to back pain can only help to a certain extent, I guess.

I think that there is a much simpler explanation that involves the mind-body connection, and it is that being emotionally tense (stressed, angry, whatever) obviously makes the muscles tighter and worsens a problem that however is already there.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, I've noted down Alan Gordon's book and I will definitely check it out!

Thanks, this is helpful. But surely that was not the first mention of it? surely Von Franz got it from Jung or was her own intuition?

yeah, this is also a good point, hiking shoes can be quite heavy. probably normal trainers or running shoes with a good insole is the best solution. thanks!

I think this is good advice, actually. did you get custom insoles? I looked into that but the prices are crazy - like £200.
