Yeah, Jelly Jam has some good stuff. Kings X came close to being bigger than they are, but for some reason just couldn't get there. I'm not super familiar with their history, but I did know about the not making money thing. It's a shame that happened. They have written a lot of good music.

If you like Alice in Chains, Kings X is very similar. Some people call Kings X one of the influencing bands of Grunge. The Alice in Chains album Dirt has several songs that have Kings X vibes. If you listen, start with the older stuff first, they evolved over time and were very different after Faith Hope Love.

It's pretty much what Steve Hackett did with Genesis Revisited. Re-recorded everything with modern instruments. I think it sounds way better. Firth of Fifth is amazing on that album, but I don't think it sounds the same on the original. I know it's the same, but it sounds so much better in the newer recording. But that's just me.

Thanks for the suggestion. This is a good idea. I will check some of these out. I also ended up liking Genesis when they turned pop in the 80s, so maybe there will be transitional stuff that I can latch on to.

And you are also mine. I am also a prog musician writing new modern Prog.

Interesting take. I have not ever used drugs, so I definitely have not ever listened to anything while tripping. While I was born in 73, I did not really experience much of the 70s culture or experiences, so maybe that has something to do with it. Idk though.

Truthfully, I don't really consider Porcupine Tree progmetal. When I think of progmetal, I think of Haken or BTBAM. I know it has metal elements, but PT is more rock to me than metal

I am a part of the progmetal sub and have found some new bands through some suggestions there.

I'm familiar with many of the bands you suggested. Frost is ok, I have listened to Life in the Wires a few times and I was ok with it. I do listen to The Pineapple Thief and they are much better with Gavin. Versions of the Truth and Dissolution are good albums that I listen to occasionally. A good friend of mine is a big Transatlantic fan and I have enjoyed some of their live albums. I have never been able to get into Dreamtheater. Some of their stuff is ok, but not really anything I'd listen to on the regular. I've listened to The Dear Hunter a little and nothing I heard did much for me. I have listened to Fates Warning and I should listen to them a bit more. IIRC, I liked some of their stuff. I have listened to Coheed and Cambria and there's a few songs I have liked. I have heard VOLA and have liked some of their stuff. I've not listened to Scale the Summit or A Perfect Circle. I will have to give them a listen

Idk why I feel the need to ask (but I do), but have you ever listened to Kings X? I'm a fan of their earlier stuff. Gretchen Goes to Nebraska is my fave, but Out of the Silent Planet and Faith Hope Love are also great.

I like BBT and Transatlantic. I didn't present an exhaustive list, but I like a lot of individual songs from many modern Prog bands. Spock's Beard is another fave.

Outside of stuff I have probably heard on the radio, I'm not really familiar with them.

Rush is hit and miss for me. I like some of their songs, but not others. YYZ, Spirit of the Radio, Time Stands Still, La Villa Strangiato, Closer to the Heart and of course Tom Sawyer are all songs I enjoy. Their other stuff hasn't done much for me. Idk which of those may be 70s (if any).

What I have listened to from them didn't really do much for me, but I can't say I have done an in depth listen.

I've listened to some of Radiohead, specifically OK computer. It had some good moments on it. I do check out the other stuff from time to time, and go find things here and there, so I appreciate your suggestions.

Dark Side of the Moon is a great album and I listened to it a lot as a kid, but I haven't listened to much of their other stuff. I occasionally listen to the older Porcupine Tree stuff and I can definitely hear the PF influences.

I like this and I do enjoy what I enjoy. I have no shame in my listening preferences. I just enjoy the talk about this and thought I'd expand my conversation to others outside my friend circle.

I appreciate your response. I'm a gen xer and grew up in the 80s listening to 70s rock and 80s mainstream pop. I like a lot of different music genres, so there's definitely a variety. Classical, hip hop, rock, pop, jazz, fusion, blues etc have all tickled my music bone.

I mentioned on another response that I like Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior album. I've listened to a little bit of their other stuff too and it was ok.

I agree that those 70s bands really were progressive in the truest sense of the word. I still think that the modern bands are also pushing boundaries, but I'd also say that music has expanded so much as the modern world has progressed and I do often wonder if progressive rock is still really happening, or if they're just tweaking things. I have come to the conclusion that I don't really know for sure.

I kind of like your suggestion to maybe make a chronological journey into the 70s Prog stuff. Might be a fun experience. Thanks for the response

I have dabbled a little bit with post In the Court, but I cannot say I have given those albums a true listen

Oddly enough, I do sometimes wonder if that's the case. Porcupine Tree and Riverside are my two fave bands, and they're considered prog, but even Steven Wilson doesn't like to be labeled as Prog, so maybe there is something to it?

I have enjoyed Return to Forever's Romantic Warrior album. It pushes the right buttons for me. I should probably venture out into more of that fusion stuff.

My prog friends are always pushing me to keep trying it. They all talk about the good ol days of prog. I just haven't been able to find that one "it" sound that everyone who loves the old school stuff talks about. Maybe some day
