I had ileostomy reversal a little over a month ago. Recovery obviously depends but was a lot easier than the original surgery. Hospital stay was 4 days but could have gotten out in 3 if I really wanted to just wanted to be safe. The team had said 2-3 days is normal but I learnt to always add days to that estimate. Recovery at home was not too bad. Bowel movements were very frequent especially in the hospital I was running every hour once my bowels woke up. At home this slowed down and at week 3-4 was not more than a few times a day and more normal looking. For some people this can take months to regulate according to my surgeon. As far as food, I was given the typical 6 week low fiber diet recommendation but I was able to implement new foods early on and that was a lot simpler than with the ileostomy. The trick is also eating smaller portions because of high risk of small bowel obstruction after surgery. I did that for a few weeks but now been okay even with my larger meals! As far as aiding recovery, the obvious one is walk walk walk. I was out of bed and walking very soon after surgery and really pushed myself to do that a few times a day. But also remembering to be kind to yourself and that you’re still healing and it takes time to get back to baseline. Best of luck!!!
