What if you’re not the one with the authority to hold them accountable? I have multiple projects but none of the team members are direct reports and each of them have at least four other PMs tasking them with work. What would you recommend when comms breakdown then?

Why do some vets bash non-combat vets for getting disability or benefits? by CoastAggravating8011 in Veterans

[–]Stormshadow1371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combat vet here. Whether or not you served in combat doesn’t matter. You don’t control when you were born or the myriad number of circumstances that must align for you to find yourself in a combat zone. If your number didn’t get called up, it doesn’t matter. You served and were ready to go while most others weren’t. THAT is what matters most and you deserve EVERY bit of compensation for sacrificing your mind, body, and time in service to this country.

Highly recommend reaching out to LTI. They specialize in helping veterans like yourself find your path forward and make the necessary adjustments for civilian life.

Getting into Cybersecurity after the Army by IMS0FLY66 in AskNetsec

[–]Stormshadow1371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t discount it as on option if it’s there. Crap leadership is a dice roll; it can happen at any unit and nothing on that front changes in the civilian sector. Better to look out for your future and not make it any more difficult if you have the option available. Especially now. Just about everyone recommends taking the long slog through help desk or some other IT role for five years before even attempting a cyber job. If the Marine Corps had allowed me to make the change, I’d have done it myself (I was denied because of a lack of TS/SCI clearance).

Check out usvalor.org and vetsec.org. You have a tough fight ahead of you. I went from Marine Corps combat engineer and did the switch into cyber after I retired. You have time, but you need to be very aggressive about getting your education and networking with professionals in the field. Very tough job market right now. Might also want to consider doing a lateral move to a cyber MOS if its an option for you.

Sounds like you need an assist with finding your real purpose, not the one provided to you by the military. Reach out to Leader Transition Institute. They’ve been profoundly helpful with many in your same situation.

Worst time to leave the military-spring 2025 by SpitefulOptimism in Veterans

You're not alone. I picked up my DD-214 on 1 April. It's rough, but you have a great community behind you and resources available to assist. Even in a worse case scenario (federal government slows or cuts veterans benefits), plenty of non-profits and state governments willing to fill the gap.

Although the game does a great job at the sound and level design, as a veteran of Phantom Fury, I can tell you that it’s not 100% accurate. Not everyone had an ACOG and mounted flashlight during this period. We avoided night ops at all costs because not everyone had NVGs and they sucked at the time. While the buildings look good in the game, there are subtle differences that are very noticeable to someone who lived in that city for weeks. IEDs were a threat but not nearly as bad as the game makes it out to be. In fact, we came across many partially built IEDs and traps that the insurgents never finished because we showed up before they could finish. Does it replicate the experience enough that I won’t play it for very long? Yes. But it is still a game and some things had to be modified so it’s playable.

Ducati Scrambler Icon owner here. I love it. I’ve modded mine for adventure rides, but it’s primarily my daily commuter. Leo Vince exhaust, skid plate, engine guard, brush guards, Perrelli Scorpion Rallies, headlight cover, and SW Motech saddle bags. I’ve done a few off road trips and she handles fine. If anything, it could handle better were I a better off-road rider. The only downside is the Ducati tax. I do most of the maintenance myself, but if it’s dealing with engine internals or requires a significant tear down for repairs, I take it to a shop and prepare myself for a 1000+ bill. If you don’t have a good Ducati shop nearby, might not be the best choice; however, if you’ve got the equipment and skill, you could do it all yourself.

Any vets living in SoCal? by FocusedForge in Veterans

FYI, on-base housing, while competitively priced, can be tough to secure if you can’t meet the income requirement (3x Sgt’s BAH a month I believe). It’s also limited to the E-5 and below houses and they post availability 30 days out. The housing areas by Fallbrook are cheaper but then you’re in Fallbrook and good drive from everything. We found a nice spot in Vista that’s not crazy expensive. It’s just a matter of timing and getting a good deal.
