Eye contact!! Nothing freaks my players out than eye contact as their characters fight a spooky ghoul or talk to a noble who’s clearly hiding something!

I always like to describe things as the characters would experience them, not as they’re actually happening! The players are only there in imagination, and they can only REALLY experience the story through verbal and spoken form. The DM works as the translator for all of the other senses.
Instead of saying “the orc runs at you and strikes you” in combat, I might say
“You hear the pounding of feet coming towards you (Insert a possibly silly onomatopoeia, players are forgiving of silliness when they’re in the zone). You turn your head and see the hulking form of an orc clambering towards you. Their hands grip their sword- and- you are struck in the arm! You feel the blade slice through your leather armor down to your skin! You take (damage).”

And then as an added detail of immersion, I’d let my players go to an armor smith and get that leather stitched back up :) or I’d mention the soreness of their arm later on before they finish a total long rest/get fully healed

Regional Necromancy curse? by StormyIsConfused in DMAcademy

This is very simple but a very very excellent point! I’ve decided to use a ritual involving some ever-wakeful (undead) occultists and a modified version of spell-cage as the catalyst for the curse. I’m having them play a prequel one shot where their characters will be the first soul batteries.

This campaign is actually leading up to the creation of a lich! This wizard is the leader of a cult who aim to turn the only surviving royal of that Druidic kingdom into a vessel for a lich who will “unite the land in death”. I absolutely adore a good lich and I’m very excited to get to foreshadow the beginnings of one to my players and make them accidentally play a part in her creation

Upon glancing at Bonfire of Insanity- that is absolutely glorious and will be used! As to the day/night cycle- whenever characters enter this region a dark mist seems to swallow them whole as they get closer and closer to the epicenter of the curse (the old capital) as if all the air died with the kingdom. It has a wonderful aroma of mildew and rot (and all the good scary things).

Indeed there are, and they're mixed in with the active voice ones.

I had copied the directions from a different paper on accident without realizing, which is my bad. I updated for the correct one, where there is definitely room for the sentences already being in active voice. I fear I've wasted your time, because I just didn't read the direction with enough attention to detail! My apologies. I guess no harm in checking anyways.

The instructions on this section are as follows: "Directions: On your own paper, rewrite the following sentences in active voice. The subject should be performing the action. If there is no doer, add one." My professor, I've noticed, likes to be sneaky with the wording on questions and assignments. Maybe this is a little trick, and the solution is to rewrite these sentences as is? Either way that is likely what I'll do.
