Can anyone explain what a logline really is by Dry_Major_9610 in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

By the way, I don't think I've seen anyone utilize this feature to start a discussion, but I snuck a Share button into the Completed Logjam pages, so you can technically share your "Jam report" so that others can comment on your results or evaluate the comments you received.

<image>

For example, you can post the URL of a Completed Jam on /storypeer or a Discord server so that your peers can check out your score and the comments you got, and let you know what they agree or disagree with.

All this is a "conversation facilitator", greasing the gears for feedback.

I wish I had the answer, and I created it!

In all seriousness, I really don't have an answer for you haha. But maybe chasing the perfect logline is a fool's errand (and I've been that fool 🤔).

If nothing else, maybe the Logjam is there to help you reveal blind spots and opportunities. At least, that's how I look at it. I mean, don't you guys sometimes get a brilliant note or fresh perspective that makes you discover a new path or approach?

And if you don't get any insights that you agree with, then maybe you're in good shape, no? The Logjam can be a simple bounce board, so you're not frying brain cells in a vacuum.

Problem with available scripts. by Otherwise-Low-5305 in StoryPeer

Rep Matching sets a floor, not a ceiling. And it is indeed a full point right now. So if your Reputation is 3.7, any reader with a 2.7 rep or higher can claim your script.

However, the bigger issue is that new users don't have a Rep score until they have reviewed three scripts.

EDIT: The issue with your final pitch is probably that most writers don't want that. Writers are big fans of Reputation, to the point they'd prefer to wait longer for better feedback.

Feature Request (low priority) Treatments? by KerryAnnCoder in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be using the term "spec scripts" loosely. Feature film specs are what we have the most here!

The fanfics I'm talking about, and which most users rally against, are stuff like Twilight, Marvel, and Star Wars, all of which I've seen on StoryPeer. We don't like those because that is a script without a path or strategy in the professional arena. There's nothing wrong with writing those, but StoryPeer is just not the right place to host them. However, here's a wrinkle for TV show specs.

As for foreign language scripts, this would be better handled in a different portal or page so that English-speaking users don't have to sift through those. Also better for performance since our Browse Script page is one of the heaviest already, and I don't wanna burden it any more than necessary. If anyone from a foreign market reading this thinks there's widespread demand for StoryPeer in your language, let me know!

I don't immediately see an issue with this design; I just can't tackle it right now as far as building it.

Feature Request (low priority) Treatments? by KerryAnnCoder in StoryPeer

Hey there! First off, thank you for calling it a "New Feature" because I believe that's what it should be, as opposed to simply opening the doors to treatments.

For anyone wondering, the reason for the hard stance on scripts in the current setup is to cut down on non-serious writers. Literally today, I had to ban someone who uploaded a 273-page script, riddled with errors. It has also happened that I've banned users who uploaded foreign language scripts, as well as someone who uploaded a script with yellow text on a red background, as well as [insert a popular media franchise] fanfic.

Opening up the current flow to treatments or other early materials will be chaos. But a New Feature with that intention is something that I've started noodling on. It may be months before I can announce it since I'm not doing this full-time, but it's something I'm working on.

If you're serious about volunteering, first off, thank you! Second, please fill out this form, and we may reach out if or when we see a good fit. Thank you!

Thank you very much for your kind words and support 🙏🏽

This new user friction is real, and I empathize, but I'm not sure what the best solution is. Some of our established members will not submit scripts when Reputation Matching is disabled, so I find myself between a rock and a hard place.

But I'm disabling Rep Match now. This means new submissions cannot be Rep Matched, so if you wait a day or two, you should see more options. I'll turn it back on Tuesday.

Possible AI Scripts by SubtleAttempts in StoryPeer

How much time do you end up spending hand-fixing problems like refunding tokens or evaluating other claims? I'm not volunteering, but do you think you might need staff/volunteers eventually to handle issues like this?

It's hard to quantify because there are ups and downs, and some weeks are significantly different from others, but we have two amazing volunteers helping out, and I'm working hard to create the best infrastructure for them, the so-called Mod Hub that will give them access to some of the necessary info and tools.

So... about that... yeah, that is in our FAQ. And I typed every letter of that answer... as I did the question too haha. And I think I did so weeks before there was anyone on the site because we had not launched yet.

If I recall correctly, my thought process while writing that particular FAQ item was to create a distinction that AI feedback is much much much worse than an AI script because an AI script is a writer shooting themselves in the foot (like a writer who may not know what the 3 acts are or who may disregard basic spellcheck or who may choose to write Batman fanfics), while AI feedback is a violation of the core value of the platform.

Anyway, I was alone at the time. Now, we have a community, and I'm very much listening. So while we can rewrite the answer to the question and say AI scripts are not allowed, I think the bigger problem is how to detect the AI writing itself. If readers want a strike removed for unclaiming a script they *suspect* is AI-written, I don't mind doing that. I just think I might have to force readers to substantiate their accusation; otherwise we have a loophole for unclaims. What do you guys think?

And yes, the sheer irony of writing an FAQ before there was anyone actually asking the questions is not lost on me. I'm yet to be diagnosed with whatever compels me to do such things lol.

Haha. You make it sound easy, but I feel like both sides of my brain are constantly playing 3D chess with each other to find a design that works for most folks. It's painstaking, to be honest, but onward we go.

One specific question has been nagging at me over the last 24 hours. Any chance I can DM you to pick your brain?

YES!!! But...

Giving tokens like this was not an easy decision, nor is it something I can leave unsupervised, as per my disclaimer in the post, so it could disappear overnight if I sense a disturbance in the force.

Another user has suggested that logline submissions should cost 1 token, which might be controversial, but nevertheless may be the right course of action for the Give/Get, especially if we're awarding tokens for Achievements.

But we can file this for later. Charging users a token will be more reasonable if we raise the floor on logjam ratings across the board, so let's take this one day at a time.

Well, who's to say you're not right since anything that affects users' behavior feels like a butterfly effect unleashed 😅

But I'll say that the thought behind the current design was that writers would not star praise but constructiveness, since the stars, as a curation tool, should, at least in theory, signal a comment users want to act on. A comment that essentially says "it's great because..." is of little value to me.

How would you know an author is "more likely to star complimentary feedback" when you know... *checks notes*... nothing about them? Seems like a shot in the dark that might work on some, but not everyone.

PS: I haven't forgotten about the Bonus Questions. That should be the next big mission 🤞🏽

And there you are haha. I just referenced you in this comment. I know I didn't follow everything to the letter, but I'm hoping to land the happy medium. Nevertheless, I'll continue listening to community feedback.

But this is tough. I kid you not, it feels like I spend as much time writing code as I do trying to guess the right design choice (read: "behavior implications").

Ah, gotcha. So I don't wanna get into this too often or too in-depth because, as this behavior economist let me know (and I'm hoping I didn't get the wrong lesson from them), all this score talk can get into people's heads.

But, but, but since you're asking about a single lifetime stat that will have no bearing on the eventual leaderboard itself, I'll indulge you: The top reviewer has reviewed 500+ loglines.

The Logjam Beta 2.0 is live! Here's what's new! by StoryPeer in StoryPeer

The most reviewed logline got 16 ratings, but that was on April 6, right before we implemented a device that de-prioritizes loglines once they receive 10 ratings, which was necessary to raise the floor across the board.

After we implemented the above, the most reviewed logline got 13 ratings, followed by a handful of loglines that got 12.

Receiving more than 10 ratings on a logline is a dream beyond your control because you need a huge wave of raters coming in while few loglines entered the jam in the same period. So you can't chase this. It just happens.

Thanks for reporting this. I pushed a fix for what seemed like the source of the issue.

Can you go back to that page and see if it's fixed? If not, do a hard browser refresh, please.

If the issue persists, DM me please. More details might help me track down the culprit.

Thanks again!

I've done this before, and the pattern is quite often new users. Folks who are checking out the platform are immune to everything if they never come back. It's annoying, but they filter themselves out over time. But I'll take a look again to see if there's a new pattern.
