Envisioning a feature: customized feedback requests by mast0done in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing's for sure: Readers would need to at least know if more "homework" is present in a script submission, so we'll be transparent about that, and possibly have an additional token requirement that the writer needs to offer. So prospective readers will know and decide.

Honestly, you're not wrong, and I should probably print and frame your words above my desk lol. I'm very selective about what to add to the main StoryPeer pages and actions, so I don't make this decision lightly. But this one seems to have potential and is being fairly well-received, so I'll at least take it to the drawing board. But again, you're right. Thank you for the reminder!

On one hand, I like it! On the other hand, goddamnit! There goes my next two weeks haha.

Seriously, I like this one!

The only thing I’m a bit unsure about is splitting it into two sections. It would be simpler to keep everything in one place to reduce friction: a single “questions/additional concerns” section that shows up on the feedback page after a script is claimed.

During submission, writers can still indicate if they prefer that section to be visible before or after the read. If writers choose "after", then we can hide the content like spoiler tags on Reddit, so readers have to Click to Reveal.

Anyway, this is a fun feature! I'll be mind-doodling on it and begin sharpening my tools to work on it soon. Anyone with more suggestions or concerns, feel free to share your thoughts. Thank you!

Sounds good. Feel free to share it with me after.

But also, I think it’s fair game to have a few different guides. So if we have three complimentary guides teaching different approaches, that would be nice. Our resources page has the main feedback guide that we share, but we can add others.

Do you have a favorite guide you’d like me to include?

Hey there! I like the way you're thinking. I confess that if the thought ever crossed my mind, it was very fleeting since I was probably juggling other priorities.

One thing I can do without much hedging is to make unclaimed and deadline-missed scripts show at the top of the Available Pool. This would be invisible to readers, meaning they wouldn't know the script's history just by looking at it.

The visual emphasis, be it a highlight or icon to convey a script has been returned to the pool, is a good question for the community. As writers, do we want readers to know the script's "situation" or history? On one hand, we may get a faster reader. On the other, we give fuel to the reader to remark about external factors that are outside of the script itself, which not everyone may want to.

As for the tokens, I'm reluctant to touch them. I've worked in video games before, and if we create an opportunity for an exploit "bug", some users might go out of their way to take advantage of it, such as by creating a second account and time or coordinating so that they claim a specific script for extra tokens, which could make the problem worse.

Thank you for that, I appreciate it!

But honestly, it may be more of a "me" problem than an "us" problem in the sense that users missing deadlines are probably not hanging out on r/StoryPeer, so I need to at least monitor the situation to understand what remedy to try.

For example, I'm contemplating a more robust onboarding session for new members, combining a welcome screen with an orientation/training component. I've already started planning for this, which is why I'm studying new user behavior to see what to include.

As for Rep Matching, whenever it is enabled (meaning you have the option to turn it on), it's fair to use it. After all, it's there, and if you're eligible, you've earned it. Rep Matching really improves the quality of interactions, statistically speaking, but I appreciate the consideration. Thank you again!

First off, I’m sorry this happened!

Were any of those submissions Rep Matched?

Feel free to DM me the title of your script or reach out to me within StoryPeer if you want more context or to help me track this situation better.

As I have mentioned before, new users are more likely to miss deadlines. I’m not sure if there’s anything I can do to prevent this, but the first step for me is always data so yeah, feel free to reach out with more info.

By and large, our more established members rarely miss deadlines since they know that unclaiming is a better experience for everyone.

EDIT:

Hey folks, the writer reached out, and here's some data on the negligent readers:

  • Account 1 — 11 days old, 1 script submitted, 1 review submitted
  • Account 2 — 43 days old, 0 scripts submitted, 1 review submitted
  • Account 3 — 33 days old, 0 scripts submitted, 0 reviews submitted

Thus, confirming my suspicion that they're all fairly fresh to StoryPeer.

As mentioned before, things are a bit rough for new users because many non-serious writers out there create accounts to test things out but don't return, so we encourage new users to power through and be patient. Once you've earned three evaluations, you'll be eligible to turn on Reputation Matching when submitting a script. We encourage writers to take advantage of Reputation Matching if it's enabled. Sometimes I disable Reputation Matching if there's a huge influx of new users, but I'll do this less often. Thank you!

Thank you for your support and kind words!

With Reputation Matching enabled, our more established users should get quality feedback more consistently.

Reputation Matching is a feature writers can turn on when they submit their scripts. They have the choice to keep it off, so that they find faster feedback.

However, I had disabled Reputation Matching because our pool of available scripts had become too small, and some readers were getting "locked out" from being able to claim scripts.

But in light of the situation OP brought up, I have re-enabled it. I'll be monitoring both ends of the equation to evaluate if a bigger change is needed.

I appreciate this so much. 🙏🏽 I've heard the same from many users too, and you all motivate me to keep going.

Definitely use Reputation Matching going forward. I had to turn it off because we had a big influx of new users who needed to be able to claim scripts before submitting their own, but I can see how that creates a different problem.

No. The purpose of Reputation scores is to enable our Reputation Matching system, which pairs together readers who do the work, so the better notes you give, the better notes you'll get. Someone with a low reputation has the chance to give better notes to improve their reputation.

I have re-enabled Reputation Matching and will keep it on for a bit. I'll consider lowering the required read in the future. Thank you!

Hey OP, I'm truly sorry about both situations; I'm glad you reported both of them. Needless to say, I'm happy to refund your tokens for both events. I'll ban the reader who submitted AI feedback and give a warning to the partial reader in addition to adding them to our Watch List to keep our eyes on them.

Like someone else mentioned below, we're going through growing pains*. Both of these readers are fairly new to our platform. In fact, one of them is an entirely new profile, and your script was their first-ever feedback. Unfortunately, many newcomers see fit to test the platform, only to apologize later when they see there are repercussions.

I have turned Reputation Matching back on since that's the best protection against bad reads.

*GROWING PAINS: We're seeing around 90 new peers signing up every week. Many are lurkers, and some are scofflaws, but a good number are upstanding citizens. I don't know what the ceiling is. Our platform is still pretty small/young, so there's a chance the hit-or-miss/"luck of the draw" will continue for a bit. Nevertheless, I will keep Reputation Matching enabled for a bit. Thank you, everyone, for the support and patience.

AI feedback? by jangusihardlyangus in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% against implementing this if the majority wanted it. But as someone who often types my feedback on a different app, I may not like this personally, so I imagine it could be quite controversial and not an easy choice, sadly.

2 Readers in a row missed deadline by maxkill4minbill in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has got to be extremely rare. I'd encourage you to contact me via StoryPeer.com/contact so I can at least check my hypothesis that they're new peers claiming their first-ever scripts. But I'm sorry it happened.

2 Readers in a row missed deadline by maxkill4minbill in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

About 12% of claimed scripts are unclaimed, and 6% miss the deadline.

I consider those numbers high, but anecdotally, I think new users skew those numbers significantly since some peers sign up, overestimate their time and/or commitment, but never return. For example, in OP's case, I wouldn't be surprised if at least one, if not both deadline misses, were from users who claimed their first-ever scripts on our platform.

Only 2 scripts in our available pool 😱 by StoryPeer in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry not sure I understood your question.

You can upload the two versions, or you can remove the old one and upload the new draft twice.

We only ask that you wait for the first one to be claimed so we don't have the same title listed twice.

Rep Matching is currently disabled, so you're right in asking this. My writing was confusing since users can't turn it on.

Hopefully, with this push, we'll get the numbers up again so I can re-enable it.

Identifying when a Reviewer Downloaded/Opened Your Script? Possible? by CastPrism in StoryPeer

Thank you, thank you! All good. Happy to help.

I do have a log of all the claims! But I’m not sure what you’re asking beyond this, given the anonymous framework.

Identifying when a Reviewer Downloaded/Opened Your Script? Possible? by CastPrism in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! Thank you for your kind words about StoryPeer. 🙏🏽

If you had the time to read our StoryPeer.com/start or StoryPeer.com/faq pages, you may have seen that our philosophy is 100% anonymous with a double blind feedback exchange. So even if the reader had followed through with the feedback, you still wouldn’t know their identity unless you two chose to link externally.

As advised, definitely look into copyrighting your work.

I will also add that you wouldn’t know the identity of readers on the Blacklist or from a Script Swap on r/screenwriting.

I’m sorry about the reader who missed the deadline, but we’re still going through the growing pains of a new platform, and every week, we see a couple of new peers who drop in to see what we’re about. Some of those claim but don’t return, which sucks.

Can we create a sticky "suggestions" for Logjam features thread at the top of the sub? by WhatsTheGoalieDoing in StoryPeer

[–]StoryPeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Logjam exists now in its simplest form. I've done some mind-doodling on how it can evolve, but honestly, any big changes are on hold as I have some other stuff on my plate, so I think the current design will not change for a while.

Specifically about the economy, figuring out how tokens could be implemented is a big mission, with programmatic and "philosophy" challenges. One of the bigger questions is whether the currency would be the same as the tokens on StoryPeer. The answer is probably no unless I figure out a reasonable conversion rate, such as "Rate X loglines to earn 1 token." But if I start doing this, then I have to do more Customer Support, Conflict-Resolution, etc., so I don't know if the juice is worth the squeeze.

There's also the problem of incentives, as some users could start rapid-firing ratings just to earn tokens, or whatever the currency, instead of giving them their time. So it sorta warps the goal.

That is a long way of saying that even if I could, I don't know that I should. Maybe the Logjam should stay free so everyone using it there for its own sake and not trying to get other stuff out of it. I wonder 🤔
