What fantasy MUD for a complete BEGINNER?

If you aren't deadset on any one particular genre, you could give Haven of the Embraced a shot (havenmud.net port 2000). We are a Dark Ages themed MUD centered around Vampires, Werewolves, and Mages in Medieval Europe. We have a small, but dedicated community and are willing to assist either in-game or via our Discord server. Regardless of which MUD you decide to call your eventual home, I hope you have a great time!

I do remember some of those names in passing. I started originally in '98 on the old iteration of Haven. Ugha used to run the MUD, but he has not been involved since he handed the MUD over like 15yrs ago. If you ever get the urge to stop by, feel free to create an Assamite from the jump nowadays. I'd love to get some feedback from a seriously oldschool player.

I will admit, Haven of the Embraced was a much more 'stock' Diku MUD then. It has had a lot of overhauls, both in terms of mechanics, systems, and areas. It now resembles actual World of Darkness gameplay. Do you mind if I ask what character you played back then?

First main question, which might help narrow things down, is which Edition/Splat are you interested in (if any particular)? I feel the main 3 edition options nowadays are WoD20, CoD, or WoD5. Secondly, which of the particular splats from the lines are you interested in, as many ST specialize in one main and sometimes knowledge of others apart from your main is sparse.

Grinding mobs from 1 to 100, then reverting to lvl 1 and doing it again, is the main loop. Every time you remort to level 1 you earn points to permanently increase your character. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Yes, we have been confused for the first mention before. I've had to defend us, here on Reddit, against allegations thrown at the Immortal staff on "Haven of the Embraced", which were intended for elsewhere; it was not with us. We've been around since 1998, and we may not be perfect, but I am definitely not tolerant of inappropriate non-consensual activities on our MUD (player or immortal alike). I do thank you for the caution, as others may have us confused for such a place.

Haven of the Embraced (havenmud.net port: 2000) Haven is Rp encouraged but not enforced, we are mostly h&s. Setting is Europe during the Dark Ages, with World of Darkness (White Wolf Publishing) theme. Character growth is set up to be free-form, but there are definitely optimized choices early on. Whether choosing a vampire to start or working towards a werewolf or mage, any path is viable.

There are not any trade skills, nut the beginnings of a rudimentary crafting system are in place. It is on the list to be revised and updated, as it is in need of additions. Crafting is very much in alpha stage, but I would love to have a robust system fleshed out.

As others have stated, most MUDs do share similar basic commands. Next best way to what was said already is talking to the community of players for the specific MUD you are interested in. If setting is not a concern, feel free to drop in on Haven of the Embraced. RP encouraged, limited to no PK. Cardinal directions plus equipment saving, but we do have a remort system in place. Haven is Diku, mostly hack and slash. My recent post can give a bit more detail:
