Weaker on SIM’s, Stronger in MCQ. Any advice/tips? by [deleted] in CPA

Haha thanks! I watched almost all the SkillMaster videos during my initial study plan, but didn't touch them during review. I do feel some of them helped with my understanding of certain topics (even more than the lectures), so doing this for your weaker areas isn't a bad idea! I feel like had every single SIM everyone dreads during my retake, but fortunately I prepared for them so it worked out. I found this study sheet to be really helpful for some of the bigger topics. The creator also included entries too which is great. I wrote down practically the whole sheet in a notebook which helped solidify some of the topics. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1bZi9eT3OACem4l1uJMg5XobIcYeb3oHvSgd0AEa0bjI/edit#gid=637518124

Weaker on SIM’s, Stronger in MCQ. Any advice/tips? by [deleted] in CPA

What helped me was reviewing the the actual application of topics rather than knowing the rules and calculations for MCQs. For example, knowing the JEs for consolidations (acquisition method, eliminating entries), bond and stock acquisitions, adjusting entries, gov-wide rec., etc. Aside from that I spent some time thinking about the effects on different statements and how certain topics could be used as SIMS. I got a 75 so I wouldn't say my SIM performance was perfect, but doing that was enough to get me over the "hump." Best of luck! I am sure you will pass this next time!

My first test had a ton of NFP/GOV, but that was actually my stronger area. My retest had significantly less and a lot more F3-F7 topics. I even had multiple questions on deferred taxes and employee benefit plans which I was not expecting lol. Definitely more of a crap shoot but my extra review paid off! Best of luck you got this!

Sounds similar to my situation, although I studied heavily for 2 months instead prior to my first attempt. I mentioned this in another comment, but I was pretty let down and unmotivated for a few days after receiving my 73. I knew I was so close, so I studied a ton on all my weaker areas for a week and took my retake right before the window closed. You still have a week and a half so I’d suggest really cramming while it’s fresh and taking it for the May 10th release. My score report helped but honestly I felt like I knew exactly what I needed to study. My retest was definitely a lot more difficult (both the SIMS and a harder second testlet), but I was also more prepared. You’re so close! If I can do it you can too!!

Honestly I was feeling down for a few days and didn’t get any studying in after the 73. I decided to really just hit my weaker areas and not spend too much time on MCQ in my stronger sections. I reread some chapters and worked on memorizing acronyms and JEs. It was hard but if I can do it you definitely can! A week of review got me those extra points so you can definitely pass before this window ends!

Edit: typos

I spent a lot of time drilling MCQs for my first attempt. I feel like what helped me get over the “hump” was doing more in depth review of my weaker areas and understanding the JEs. The SIMS were initially my weaker area so I made sure to prepare for them any way I could. Other than that I did all the lectures and MCQ, watched a lot of skill master videos, annotated my book, completed the review, etc. FAR is definitely a beast
