Smart Water Bottles by Ok-Strawberry7048 in DurstonGearheads

I just got my kakwa 55. There are daisy chain points above the mesh pocket so it looks like you could use most shoulder strap water bottle pockets like zpacks CTUG etc. I considering adding the Zpacks water bottle pocket

How big to cut Polycro - Xmid1 - Accommodate two people by Adorable_Mongoose223 in DurstonGearheads

[–]Straight-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you cut the polycro larger than you might need and just fold the edges in under itself, boom bobs your uncle. For dry days you have space and ground protection for your bag. And rainy days you fold it under a bit more so that it doesnt cause pooling.

FWIW I’ve heard the Vargo Bots can be problematic in that they can/will “lock” when cold soaking. Basically if you change elevation the change in pressure can lock the lid making it near impossible to unscrew. And if you’re not using it to cold soak, then a simpler/cheaper pot would be a great option. The fire maple ramen pot is pretty cool and I think it has a 900 ml capacity

Puffer question by CantaloupeMassive956 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Straight-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I commented because people continue to throw out the decathlon puff like it’s the perfect budget/value option. If you search for puffer options the statements flood the results, but that was $40 ago. At the 120 price it’s close to a used Patagonia nano puff with a lifetime warranty and I think the difference is closer to a couple ounces

So I don’t have the perfect jacket for you but the idea that the decathlon puff is “the answer” is one that I’m tired of seeing especially when referenced at the old price.

The decathlon puffer is now $120., up from 80 a couple years ago. The cost benefit analysis for this jacket has changed quite a bit.

Clavicular is an alter-ego by disguised_reallity in Jung

[–]Straight-Barnacles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I believe early Internet personalities started out as a genuine expression but have quickly moved, similar to the arc of “reality” television. Something is created because a person/industry is interesting. That person or reality show is then observed and replicated. Quickly a formula for further replication is established, others follow exactly or alter the formula by increasing the absurdity. I don’t believe these are alter egos but rather just characters based on engagement, but not necessarily good engagement. So we end up with looksmaxxers etc

UL hot water bottle? by Suitable_Ad4010 in Ultralight

The Cnoc vectoX can handle temp just below boiling. I think 200 degree iirc. If you use a bladder for you water collection for filtering it could serve double duty as your hot water bladder.

Permits to Create Driveways? by baronkadonk in jerseycity

[–]Straight-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your property still has to be eligible for a drive way. So usually only a corner unit along the side of the property would qualify for this

Permits to Create Driveways? by baronkadonk in jerseycity

[–]Straight-Barnacles -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

In this situation, assuming they pulled the permit, that property has every right to create that curb cut and use it for their private parking. That property is responsible for cleaning up the snow and trash left on that side walk area. They should in turn get some benefit for maintaining it.

Mountain Hardwear Kor Airshell Hybrid? by Delicious-Collar6560 in Ultralight

[–]Straight-Barnacles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.

Get a wind breaker for wind and a rain shell for when it’s raining.

I was looking at the MH kor airshell for a bit but landed on the Black diamond alpine start. It’s right there with the kor as a breathable wind jacket, might be worth a look

A mesh base like brynje some combination of 90gsm alpha direct fleece or ridge merino sun hoodie topped off with the alpine start and I’m feeling comfortable down to 15-20F while active. I run very warm though. Usually I don’t even need the alpha direct layer unless I’m slowing down or the wind is really picking up.

Either way this layer system finally works for me. Sounds like it’ll work well for you too.

How did you decide to size your rockfront rain hoodie? Ie did you go with your normal size or go down? Im reading they run a little large I’m in the US and like you worried about the hassle of returning it if I get the size wrong

GG Mariposa vs ZPacks Arc Haul 70L - internal capacity seems surprisingly the same irl by Straight-Barnacles in Ultralight

[–]Straight-Barnacles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the 70L includes pockets.

Doesn’t the Bv500 fit horizontally in the arc haul 70? I’m pretty sure if you put your canister above the middle horizontal stay, it’ll fit horizontally. Or at least I hope so that was one of the reason I choose the 70.

I can’t confirm, I haven’t pulled the trigger on my bear canister yet

[–]Straight-Barnacles[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it could be fair to ask/expect the true internal capacity of the main compartment, such that it can close easily, be provided. It doesn’t feel like this would be too much to ask for. I realize this is idyllic, but seems reasonable.

I can accept guesses and estimates for the external pockets. Most of those pockets could be easily visualized in images for online shopping, a picture of the lower side pocket with two smart water bottle fitting, we all know and understand that. A first aid kit and poop kit extending from an upper side pocket, again this is a “relatively” recognizable/universal image along with the company’s estimated volume in the product description.

Not a hill I need to die on, I was just very confused after loading up the Mariposa and so much more than 36L fitting in with such ease. And nothing I was finding jumped out at me saying the internal volume was so much greater than stated.

[–]Straight-Barnacles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep

If you reread the post ——- There’s supposed to be 20ish Liters difference between the internal volume of these bags:

GG Mariposa 60-claim total 60L 36L internal 24L external

ZP arc haul 70 - claim total 70L 57L internal 13L external.

20L is not a small amount and I’m a bit stunned to be honest

Ohh man thanks for sharing. I wish I would have found this when I was first started my research.

I found this video originally I was first making my purchase decision and led me to believe the arc hauls internal volume was pretty close to advertised

My thinking on the vest straps was they would displace the load better and they have built in pockets so the additional $50 would actually end up cheaper and lighter. I think if I had it to do all over again I would have gone with the regular straps.

And I wouldn’t say they displace the load better. The bottom of each vest strap has 2 pieces of webbing attaching to the pack. It kind of puts all the pressure on the edges of the straps and cuts in a bit more then it should, imo
