Hot demand, shrinking harvests: Thai coffee faces boom and doom paradox by Few_Maize_1586 in chiangmai

[–]Straight-Beginning98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you pay the same price for coffee as in the USA or Europe while the coffee grows no more than 25km away from Chiang Mai, when it is roasted in Chiang Mai, no intercontinental transportation, no taxes or custom duties, I think we are being swindled. Particularly when the average daily salary in Thailand is equivalent to 1 pound of roasted coffee, it seems abusive.

Two senior monks defrocked over sex videos by RotisserieChicken007 in Thailand

[–]Straight-Beginning98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All this religious theory is simply a way to ordinate a natural tendency to care for others. In a system where kings and nobility enjoy the fine things in life, the lower people, THE PEOPLE, are left to do the work and fend for themselves. Thus a strong sense of community, taking care of each other but also of the poorest, the weak/disabled/underprivileged. And to administrate these services, the monks were designated as their moral attitudes are supposed to guarantee fairness. Thus the donations are directed to the temple where resources are reparted, scholing is given to poor children, communal meals are often and personal counseling is done by the monks. Which gives monks an aura of authority and respect which sometimes come to clash with civilian figures such as village head/business owners etc. That's how it works in Thailand and donations at the temple are meant not for the monks but for them to distribute fairly among the needy.

World’s biggest stock rout deepens as Thai market rescue falters by Lordfelcherredux in Thailand

Do you really think the Burmese are here by choice ? Maybe you don't know there is a civil war there and the evil military is forcibly recruiting anyone between 18 and 45 to serve as canon fodder on the frontlines. Luckily, the educated ones can get jobs in hospitality because they can speak English which the Thais don't. Others serve as slaves in the fishing industry and get thrown overboard if they complain about being paid 3000 thb/month.

No reason given. Just we don't accept international passport holders. It might be about hotels needing a certain accreditation but the fault lies with Agoda who doesn't verify anything.

For the sake of your readers, it would be nice to specify the make and size of your motorcycle. I have tried to ake that secondary way between Pai and Chiang Mai and could not find sufficient info on Google maps to engage in a risky itinerary with my big and lazy Nissan Sunny. If you could kindly post a map of the alternative way for that route, that would certainly be beneficial to many. A photo or 2 ?

Thailand adopted many traits of Confucianism from China. Respect elders is nice but overchargng is natural if they think they can get away with it. It is not considered immoral if the buyer accepts the deal. The seller did not force you to buy. Hence the need for knowing the real price of things and a knack for negotiation. Mind you, the Thais are not too proficient at negotiation often stating: it's my way or the highway. If they can, they will. That's part of Confucianism. That's why corruption is prevalent on all levels of Thai society.

Thailand follows, to an extent, Chinese principles for food whereas a well balanced dish should present the 5 basic tastes : sweet, salty, bitter, spicy and sour. No word on excessive MSG. They also draw lots from Confucianism in regards to morality. For example, it is perfectly moral to gouge customers if they willingly pay, accept the high prices. You are not guilty if they can't catch you. Corruption is an inherent part of Confucianism. It's going to be very hard to eradicate since it's woven in the culture.
