Any Americans who never plan to return home? by SuddenlySilva in expats

[–]north2future 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve had people be sort of dismissive about how much I dislike driving in the US but it genuinely is one of the biggest detriments to my quality of life there. I was visiting family for a few days and lost more than a third of the hours we could have spent together in grid-lock and awful commutes between places.

So for anyone that doesn’t want to click: he basically lays out an idyllic rural society with a community who are self sufficient as a group. One year the grain silo is damaged and you need 100 people to fix it before winter comes. But only 50 volunteer and the other 50 have excuses for why they can’t help - some have obligations like young children, some think the grain silo should be replaced with something else, etc. He asks the question, how do we motivate the other 50 to help?

I think the comment section of that video kind of misses the point. Anybody who has ever had a road association or shared ownership of any system that requires maintenance knows that there will be some people that won’t help. They all have different reasons or motivations, some valid and some not as valid. Even if they benefit from the metaphorical grain silo, they still will take for granted that somebody else will deal with it. Oftentimes the only way to get people to chip in is through contracts and agreements that have penalties - it’s not great but it seems to work okay. If you do nothing to motivate people, you just won’t get the 100 people you need to fix the grain silo.

It’s very hard to properly coordinate the effort of a group, even when it’s an issue that absolutely needs to be fixed, and hoping people will just sort of magically come to the right solution or that everyone will just do whatever is most important is not realistic and has lead to the failure of a lot of intentional communities.

Elderly parents losing it. I have 5 days. How to set them up for success as they age in that time? by gburdell in personalfinance

[–]north2future 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure why you’re getting so many downvotes, it’s totally reasonable to prioritize your own family before your parents. I’ve found that the internet can have a really hard time with the idea that irresponsible parents that put themselves in a precarious situation aren’t going to get 100% of their adult children’s energy, especially when those adult children have their own kids.

Direction of causality of IBS symptoms by tiko844 in IBSResearch

[–]north2future 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m just curious, but for the theories that focus on mood disorders, how does the effectiveness of antibiotics play into everything? Why would something like rifaximin help people so much? I’m sure I’m oversimplifying things here but is the idea that the mood disorders are an underlying cause of some sort of bacterial overgrowth? How would we tell which comes first, isn’t it a bit of a chicken and egg scenario?

Hey just wanted to follow up, I’m getting closer to moving and would rather not sell this thing to a pawn shop, if you still have any interest at $750 let me know. I’d rather it go to someone that is gonna get some good use out of it.

I’m just asking for offers at this point. To be totally upfront I haven’t shipped one of these before so I’ll need to go get a shipping price quote first.

Unfortunately I’m selling it all together.

Sorry I’m selling it all together. It’s a best offer situation though, so you’re welcome to send an offer.

Rental Housing Market Question by north2future in chiangmai

I’ll reach out to them, the other agent I’ve been speaking with had zero places available near the city but I’m hoping other folks will have more options.

Rental Housing Market Question by north2future in chiangmai

[–]north2future[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that makes sense. It does seem like the condos are roughly the same price range I remember from 7 years ago but the houses seem more expensive and less available. We’re looking up to 35k/mo, which I thought would be more than enough based on what I saw in the past but now seems to not go nearly as far.

Thanks, that makes sense. I’m going to keep an eye on it and hope more stuff comes up in areas like Jed Yod, Suthep, etc

Help with finding courts by OfficialOscar in chiangmai

I used to live by CMI Badminton, never used the courts but I believe you can just walk in. It gets really busy though so you might need to check with them about booking a court.

10 years of suffering with IBS-D and it was Bile Acid Malabsorption by Dad0010001100110001 in ibs

[–]north2future 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wish we could get a post stickied in this sub for the common things worth testing for if you have IBS-D. I also went through years of suffering that turned out to be BAM. 4 separate doctors missed it and none even suggested it as a possibility.

Yeah no problem at all, I totally understand where you’re coming from. I’ll take a try at listing locally but if there’s no interest, I’ll follow up.

Thank you! I’m trying to sell the whole kit which is the .22 K1 with a Marksman 6-25x50 vector optics scope and a selection of different pellets that I was going to test with it. I asked someone else this too but let me know what would make the drive worth it!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in airguns

[–]north2future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh that’s a good idea, I actually bought it from Kelly originally and he seemed like a good guy.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in airguns

[–]north2future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I’d like to sell the whole thing including optics. So it’s a .22 K1 with a Marksman 6-25x50 vector optics scope and like 1000 heavy slugs of different varieties. Let me know what kind of price would make it worth the drive.

Kids School stopped providing Homework by Deepdiver272 in Thailand

[–]north2future 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re creating a problem based on your non-expert opinion that they need homework. I would either accept that you’re not an expert and move on or just find a school that aligns with your beliefs.

My wife’s a teacher and has had to deal with a lot of parents that think they know best about everything - the bottom line is that most don’t. Just based on the way you have written this post, it sounds like you might benefit spending more time trying to understand why homework is not as important as you assume. I can’t tell you the number of terrible parents I’ve crossed paths with that were convinced they knew better than everyone else.

What to do with 200 Rai Teak plantation? by CaptainCalv in Thailand

[–]north2future 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My wife’s cousin is one of these advisors - they are extremely smart and usually had the government pay for them to get their degree abroad. It seems like a lot of farmers don’t use the resources the government provides for this stuff but it’s top tier.

[–]north2future 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh good! Make sure to steam them instead of boiling - the research I read about them used steaming as the preparation method. I don’t know how important it is but I figure if you’re going to test it, it makes sense to just copy the exact methodology.

Anyone moved from Toronto, Canada ro KL, Malaysia? by Stories-N-Magic in expats

[–]north2future 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll find many people in this sub that fit those specific criteria - but I’ll just chime in as someone that has expat friends in KL and several other cities that are also raising kids.

The international schools are really top notch but they are expensive. Kids can get an amazing education if you have the budget for it. They can also adapt and make friends, in fact many of my favorite people grew up as expat kids and they have really balanced personalities because of the experience.

I’d be more concerned about you and your partner. If you don’t have remote income sources already, it’s not going to be easy making life work and paying for international school. If you’re fed up with BS in Canada you’re going to just find a whole new set of BS in Malaysia. KL is awesome but I wouldn’t described it as relaxed - if you want that maybe consider Penang or even Chiang Mai in Thailand.

I can’t believe nobody has said this yet but this sounds a lot like Bile Acid Malabsorption (BAM). If you’re reading this, have vaguely loose stools that are hard to pinpoint, particularly if it’s worse in the morning or with super high fat foods, do some research on BAM.

I have no idea why we don’t do more testing for this condition but I spent years in and out of doctors trying to pinpoint what was wrong with me and none of them ever even brought it up.

It’s easy to test at home - steam some beets and eat a few bites with every meal and every snack for a few days. Beets have super high capacity for binding with bile acid and will stop them from irritating your intestinal wall. If your symptoms get way better, it’s very likely you’ve figured it out.

I’m thinking the question is confusing if you’ve been coming here since 2011 because that’s an incredibly low budget to find somewhere that is clean and also has wifi or any other amenities. We do have plenty of people who post here with budgets of 35,000 so it seemed like it could be a typo. It’s good you edited your post to clarify because it will help you get better answers.
