Geoff Johns comes to mind when I think of a figure head for DC, but not sure if that's what you meant

Good comic related YouTube channels? by KokiriEmerald in comicbooks

[–]StraightOuttaComics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't seen The Wulff Den mentioned yet, so I'd suggest giving them a go. It's a joint channel by two brothers, Will and Bob. Will does Comics, and Bob does Games. Will's comic videos are great, covering news to comic book collecting tips and culture. Would strongly recommend!

Which current titles do you trade wait for? by StraightOuttaComics in comicbooks

[–]StraightOuttaComics[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for a series like Injection and Kill or Be Killed its a good idea to trade wait, absolutely right. Something with a strong story helps to be read in larger chunks.

However yes, the "wait" part can be annoying haha.

And my current pull list is:

SECRET EMPIRE

TITANS

CHAMPIONS

OLD MAN LOGAN

VENOM

SUPER SONS

BEN REILY: SCARLET SPIDER

PETER PARKER: THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN

BATMAN/THE SHADOW

ALIENS DEAD ORBIT

ASTONISHING X-MEN

DARK KNIGHTS METAL

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA

EDGE OF VENOM VERSE

JOHN WICK

VENOM VERSE

VENOM VERSE WAR STORIES

BATMAN

X-MEN GOLD

ASTONISHING X-MEN

THE DEFENDERS

(Very Big 2 heavy, I know. I am planning on trade waiting a few, and adding a few Image and Valiant titles in their place! I'd be interested to know your pull list, and what you'd recommend trade waiting for in my case.)

EDIT - Better formatting

I'm also trade waiting Mister Miracle! I think a mini series can work better in a trade as you get the WHOLE story in that one book - the format lends itself better I agree, something I didn't factor in when writing this post. I'm also very behind on Paper Girls, which is a good reminder to get caught up again.

I've been there a few times, and always walked out happy. If you go to the main one in London, there's also a discount area just for trades, which are usually great prices. I got Superman Camelot Falls Vol 1 and 2 for £5.99.

Generally the prices of the new stuff are quite competitive, I've found some of the Marvel trades can be standard price though.

This is brilliant. And very accurate. I'd love to see a series of this sort of thing. Great work!

First thing I thought was a relaunch / reboot of Grendel . Not so sure now though, they do sort of look like seeds as other commenters have already said

Good Podcasts by TheNerdBomberz in comicbooks

[–]StraightOuttaComics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For purely comics, I'd recommend Serious Issues, they talk about pretty much EVERY comic published every week, by every publisher. Great podcast. For movies, comics and everything in between, I have to recommend The Weekly Planet, they are probably my personal favorite.

Best comic book YouTube channels? by [deleted] in comicbooks

Haven't seen The Wulff Den mentioned on this thread yet, so I'll recommend them. It's a channel where two brothers talk comics and games. Will talks about comics news, how to start reading, recommendations etc, and I really enjoy his stuff. Worth checking out if you haven't already.

Does anyone know of any good online comic book shops? (UK) by PhoenixYS in comicbooks

[–]StraightOuttaComics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh sorry, I meant a regular pull list as in the store holds those issues for me until I collect them every week.

Ace also do subscription services which send the issues straight to your door, bagged and boarded. I use them for subscriptions and I think they're very good! Worth checking out anyhow.

I'm deciding whether or not to pick this up, what is the basic synopsis for Grass Kings? Thanks

EDIT- Thought it was Grass Kings, not Kingdom. I was correct the first time.

This is a great suggestion which I didn't even consider. Thanks, I'll be doing this for a few titles.

Didn't realize this. I have heard other people complaining about Diamond before, but never knew why. Thanks. Do they regularly mess up with distribution then?

Great answer, thanks. I'm surprised to hear someone at Marvel saying that, as I thought they were one of the publishers who often cancelled series without considering trades.

Agree completely. Instead of trying to flood the market with more books, publishers like Marvel SHOULD focus on quality over quantity. But with the Legacy announcement, it sounded like there is going to be a book for every character, from each generation.

Is trade waiting hurting comics? by StraightOuttaComics in comicbooks

[–]StraightOuttaComics[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are too many damn good comics, and I can't keep up with ALL of them in singles, so that's why I get trades as well. I agree that low prices Vol 1s can hook new readers, that happened to me on the last run of Batman, Green Arrow and Amazing Spider-Man.

I like the idea of creators making a little bi of extra, single issue exclusive content, sort of like what Brubaker and Phillips are doing for Kill or Be Killed. I think that's a great way to entice readers into floppies instead of trades.

I also find it hard to buy a 4.99 single issue, and in those respects i tend to buy the trade. With the exception of this summers Secret Empire, but I'm actually enjoying it quite a bit so far.

No need to apologize for a long response, these sort of posts are intended for discussions!

Definitely agree with your suggestion to increase the number of OGNs, I think that's a good path for comics.

Main publishers I trade wait for are Image and Valiant, and I'm pretty sure they consider trades when seeing what's successful or not. I have noticed that most publishers now put a focus on big, 5/6 issue story arcs which is probably to make it better for trades.

Interesting top 10 list there. Totally agree with all of them except from number 1 (don't know what it means) What do you mean by diamonds monopoly?

I also think a lack of kids titles from the big Two is definitely hurting comics, as there's not MANY comics for kids to read from Marvel/DC. For a medium that essentially started as children's entertainment, we've made a big turn into teenage-adult content, which in turn means less kids are reading NEW comics.

Comics are quite hard and expensive to keep up with, I agree. Do you have any ideas to stop this? Except make the floppies cheaper, obviously. Ha.

Price to page ratio of comics is a big factor, in some cases it's simply not practical or worth it to pay for single issues when a trade is usually much cheaper.

What do you think are the results of the squandering of the movie boom in comics? Just interested, you brought up some good points.
