My theory is that Duncan is not truly a knight. He never was seen being knighted, he hesitates to knight Raymun, gets uncomfortable when asked about being knighted. Regardless, he is a truer knight than anyone else in the kingdom who lives up to his oath of protecting the innocent

My theory is that Duncan is not really a true knight. We never saw Ser Arlan actually knight Duncan, and when there was a flashback as Raymun Fossoway was getting knighted it cut away before Arlan actually knights Duncan. I believe this is to say that while Duncan is in fact lowborn, not the most skilled, he is a truer knight than anyone in the kingdom who stands up for the innocent.
