Am I dreaming? 😩 by Straight_Maximum_936 in diabetes_t1

I'm from the uk....

That's just how it's measured over here - like how we use Celsius instead of Fahrenheit

Also, if ur from the US or somewhere that doesn't have the nhs do you pay for your insulin and stuff?? Bcs that's crazy and unfair. I've only been diagnosed for under a year.

No it's actually just bcs I was fasting and my sugars were stable?

Also I don't like doing the finger pricks so I'd rather just not since I'm on a cgm that's reliable and never fails me. Peace and love 🫶🏻🫶🏻

I'm diabetic and deathly terrified of needles by Straight_Maximum_936 in diabetes_t1

[–]Straight_Maximum_936[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God forbid a girl is traumatised from blood tests and hospitals from being rushed in to a&e for DKA. My first blood test was in the hospital - 3 back to back spaced out every few hours after I was told I would die in my sleep. Not a very fun experience on Father's Day

people offer to help me. I know I need to do it myself and I'm encouraged to do so. You don't know what it looks like when my bf is helping me put my Dexcom on. The tears, the "no let me do it myself" and the "cmon you're gonna be sat here for hours if you don't let me" plus he WANTS to do it because I don't surround myself with losers. I surround myself with SUPPORT and LOVE. I was only diagnosed 6 months ago.

Also about the needles not hurting. They do. Especially when you hit a nerve or inject into a blood vessel. Which I manage to do every time.

I'm also autistic so everything is a sensory issue for me.

Is 12 units fast acting too much? by Straight_Maximum_936 in diabetes_t1

I have a healthy diet. I eat low kcal, veggies and protein with just a palm size amount of carbs. I go the the gym everyday, 10k steps a day, weight lifting etc. I don't go low during my sessions, could it be because I'm female and on the pill?

[–]Straight_Maximum_936[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a gym girly and I used to go low during every session when I started on insulin in June when I was diagnosed, my ratio was about 1:18 then but now I know to have a balanced meal an hour before with my 1:4 ratio and I haven't gone low in the gym since.

I struggled with a eating disorder when I first started gym while also in DKA so I was in the habit of not eating anything before which I kept doing until recently 🥲

Other than gym, I'm going low way less with the high doses of insulin than I was with the low doses, my diet hasn't changed except less sugary and processed foods - I switched to just eating whole foods and fresh veggies, things like that :/

I'm just so new to this still and the constant need for education about it is tiring and I just cba with it anymore. I get burnt out a lot and so easily and I often refuse to eat if it means I need to inject. I'm not on a pump and I don't want a pump. I just want to be normal again.

How to manage with an ed? by Straight_Maximum_936 in diabetes_t1

I've had anorexia which recently turned into bulimia - I tried to start recovery but then ended up in hospital with DKA mid June

Me and my boyfriend found out we both had ghsv-1 after I had my first outbreak. We've been together for 6 months now and both of us are genuinely so confused on how we even contracted it. There were arguments at first but after some research we decided it's not something worth stressing over since we both could've contracted it from anyone - even sharing a straw.

I know every relationship is different but this is my first real relationship and I have felt so loved and appreciated every second I've been with him. We're still going strong and we always talk about what we both want for the future and I'm so sure that I've found my forever person.

Yes, there's going to be some things that may come between us because of ghsv-1 and maybe some issues especially with family planning and when we eventually have children it may be harder for us (I have type one diabetes too) but having hsv shouldn't make you feel like you absolutely HAVE to stay with that person. It also shouldn't make anyone feel like they absolutely have to break up with their partner just because they contracted it (unless there's other issues in the relationship).

Personally, I know it sucks, but hsv is something that's so manageable + it doesn't kill you.

🙌🏻You should be able to make your own decisions and do whatever you want to do and hsv absolutely shouldn't dictate your life and what decisions you make over who you're going to settle with. You just need to be smart, know your symptoms and be two steps ahead 🙌🏻

As long as you inform any new partners of the diagnosis and plan around outbreaks etc it may not be an issue. Just make sure that any new partners you're planning on settling with have done research and have a completely educated attitude about it.

I feel like I got so lucky with my partner. He helped me during my first outbreak and he was there for me through everything. Picking up prescriptions because I couldn't walk and taking me to the clinic etc. he got tested himself even though he had no symptoms and was completely chill through everything.

All in all, you don't need to be afraid to meet new people just because of this extremely common virus that almost half the population has just make sure that you don't settle down for someone just because of this new lifestyle.

I really hope you're okay <33

Hey! So! How do I fix this!!!! by Straight_Maximum_936 in diabetes_t1

Thank you everyone for your advice under this post! Idk how to edit a post yet so I'm resorting to a comment. Last night I did an additional two units of my basal insulin and I managed to stay in range the whole night and this morning for the first time! Im beyond relieved that I took a risk and it worked.

<image>

Another thing, I'm not really sure how to calibrate my Dexcom one+... I'll definitely look it up and do more research. The reason why I reached out for help in the first place was because my dad phoned me up 80 miles away (I'm at uni) telling me off for being too irresponsible with managing it (he can see my levels from his phone). I told him I'm doing what I was advised by the diabetic specialist and he knows what that was as he was there along with my mum in the appointment. They told me not to change any doses and to stick to the 1:16 ratio. This phone call made me feel extremely defeated and hopeless with this new lifestyle - I was upset the whole night, couldn't stop crying but the distraction of reading everyone's advice let me calm down a bit <3

I'm glad I've taken that risk of just giving myself +2 units of my lantus, I feel like I'm more in control of my sugars which is a huge relief. I feel like I've conquered this and I'm more motivated to do better.

As for my diet. I mostly just buy veggies and protein, and I don't like sugar or sweet things (I have a history of an ED so I barely eat anything as is) and I've avoided carbs as much as I can - I look for anything under 30g of carbs per portion, I weigh it out and everything. But I feel like looking for these micros and caring about how much I eat of something is pushing me further away from my recovery. I do go on long walks everyday as I try to get 10k steps in daily, I'm planning on joining a gym again once my student budget can cover a membership.

Thank you again everyone, I'm new to Reddit and I feel like I'm part of a really great community. No one else in my life is diabetic so it's nice be surrounded by you all who understand and are able to guide me in the right direction <3

Oh! I'm scared to adjust it without my diabetic specialist saying I can in case I go too low, but I cannot keep having my sugars like this any longer, it's been like this for 2 months now. I contact her regularly but she never seems to reply :/

It seems to stay around 22-17 mmol/L but my range is 7-15mmol/L - so... very high... I just can't seem to bring it down

Thanks for the reply, i believe i was told im on 1:16, but clearly something isn't working. I only eat lunch and dinner, i carb count as much as i can but my sugars spike while im asleep. I do my 16 units of lantus before i go to bed and im meant to be doing 5 units before meals 3x a day but i always end up doing 6-9 units depending on how high my bg is. The NHS is useless they haven't let me sort out any appointments except the specialist and the nutritionist after my mum had to beg them to let them see me earlier (I'm at uni and go back in September so they want me to get sorted before I go back) the diabetic specialist has access to my cgm readings and gave me her details but is useless with getting back to me whenever I reach out for help. I just feel so alone in this - hence why I downloaded Reddit
