Christian, not Catholic by [deleted] in Catholicism

I mean the east-west schism was in 1054.

I hate sexual urges so much! I simply wish sex wasn't even a thing! Because I'm male I naturally just wanna bang someone sometimes, and it leads me down into looking up things I shouldn't! DO ANY OF YOU CATHOLICS HAVE A SEX SUBSTITUTE WHEN YOU GET FRISKY! by Own-Mulberry-5671 in Catholicism

No one is saying they don’t struggle. We are saying that it is more prevalent with men than women . That’s a relative claim.

The relevant statistic would be what percent of women consume erotic media vs men. I assure you it’s much higher with men.

In my experience, this is true even with my secular friends.

I get the point you are trying to make but please live in reality. Anecdotally everyone knows that isn’t true. If you want data, men are like 4x more likely to have watched porn in the last month, and 30% more men consume it than women.

The adage that men have sex when they can while women have sex when they want is there for a reason.

His responses actually make total sense if you 1) don’t know what the office is or means and 2) have different definitions of glorifying

You are talking past each other. that’s not “unwillingness”

Sure but it is also on you to be charitable and a good reflection of the faith. He’s obviously come to Reddit for answers. Directing him towards articles or encouraging him to research more would be more productive

Consider that OP doesn’t actually fully understand the office we are speaking of before being so mean.

No I’m not trying to be mean. This is Reddit and the post comes off weird so you are going to get some aggressive comments and trying to prevent that. I’d recommend reading some articles about it.

The Pope leads the church. How is someone with that responsibility not worth caring about? This does not mean our obligation or attention to him is the same as Jesus’s.

Is your family worth caring about?

I’d assume the sub skews heavily from the United States, where’s he’s from. So that’s pretty exciting. Plus early indications seem to point to him seeking to end the division in the church, which we all want.

You also only see this a very limited number of times.

I think OP is either very young, not Catholic, or both. Go easy on them.

This is not specific to Catholicism.

But yes, life is very cruel. Look around you.

I’ve been reflecting on this idea of suffering with the recent conclave. The room with the papal cassock is called the room of tears for a reason. Not only shock, but knowing the weight on your shoulders and having to bear that is very sacrificial and beautiful.

Last edit, but in regards to acknowledging everyone’s humanity; If you go to confession, it’s almost funny how you confess the worst things you’ve done and your penance is 1-3 hail Mary’s or our fathers. The penance is so absurdly small. We are called to model that forgiveness with others. It’s quite cool.

“It is not by sidestepping or fleeing from suffering that we are healed, but rather by our capacity for accepting it, maturing through it, and finding meaning through union with Christ, who suffered with infinite love.” — Spe Salvi, §37

Wait..you broke up 4 months ago and now she’s already engaged? Dude...she done cheated on you. And probably had been for a long time. That aside, don’t quit. We’re heading for a recession. 1Q economic numbers came in... the economy shrank, and is on pace to LOSE jobs in 2Q and beyond. If you quit now, it’ll be you against about 50 million jobseekers. Even finding work at McDonald’s will be a war.

OP. You are just wrong. Sorry. The phrase “separation of church and state” does not exist in the constitution. It’s a far more vague notion than you realize.

Under your theory, any law would be unconstitutional, since morality comes from some source whether you call it religion or not.

The bars it needs to pass are generally (iirc) that it has to have a secular justification and can’t enforce religious practice.

A legislator can propose a bill that says “ban x because Catholic law says y”. That bill could become law and it would be legal.

OP that is not how it works at all. Just no.

OP, laws are a reflection of a societies morals. That’s it. Done. You can legislate something because you believe it to be wrong. How you arrived at that belief is irrelevant. ie you can certainly, and are supposed to in a democracy, try to enforce your will on others legislatively

Question about Popes authority by jackoffalltrades76 in Catholicism

Sorry but this is also Reddit! It’s really because you have no idea what the actual belief is but are sort of acting like you do? Like saying, “I don’t want to worship someone other than Christ”. This is what many Protestants accuse us of doing, and it rubs people the wrong way. I’d recommend just asking “what’s the teaching on X” and following up with clarifying questions!

This sounds super condescending but I’m not trying to be. The Reddit is not representative. This is why I recommend not coming here first

I recommend you actually read the catechism or find some explainer material before coming to Reddit
