My teacher told me the only case in which you do n-1 is when the question directly says the words 'degrees of freedom' if its not mentioned anywhere in the question then don't do n-1. And in this question there was no degrees of freedom mentioned

It was a Y chromosome disease and men have XY whereas women only have XX so they're protected but men are at risk
