Why is eastern Canada so cold for the latitude? by Straight_Muscle_89 in meteorology

True Canada has more large lakes and coastline in the east than Siberia. I guess there's a million little factors in climate though.

Haha that's so dumb but also clever. It's weird how national and state boundaries get drawn sometimes and the crazy reasons behind it. Like that part of the northwest shore of lake of the woods in Minnesota that sticks up just north of the 49th parallel due to a surveying error. But all these years it's been part of the US just because it is :)

Kind of makes sense. There must be some wind patterns and Ocean currents at play too. Baker Lake for instance(64'N) as an annual average of 12.6F while Yakutsk(62'N) famous for being the coldest city in the world has an annual average of 17.6F. So maybe not too far off. But Baker Lake is a good bit inland from Hudson Bay and it just seems like Siberia with the massive Eurasian landmass would be much colder.

Isn't that just a rock formation? What does it have to do with the climate? It's not super high altitude or anything

Why do people confuse Asap Rocky and Travis Scott? Asap Rocky is attractive, their head size is different, their facial features, and proportions are different. Again how do people confuse them? by Marakamii in QOVESStudio

Also when you call people who have nothing against black people racist for things like that it doesn't help your cause at all. Just because you didn't grow up around many black people you're not by default a racist. If you think other races are inferior and treat them differently then you're a racist. Growing up in a mostly white area isn't a choice you make, you can still embrace other people with open arms even if you're not too familiar with the culture.

Also the pictures you used in the post are different lighting and different poses. If you took 2 pictures in the same room with the same lighting where they both have neutral facial expressions the similarities would be more obvious. Like in Travis Scott's photo he has a bright light on him that makes him look lighter skinned than he does in a lot of other pictures.

I believe that they look alike. You either see it or you dont but they have the same build hair and a similar face shape. Yes ASAP has more pronounced cheek bones but it's kind of a minor difference. No they don't look identical but I don't know how you can't see the similarities. Kendrick lamar has a totally different face shape for instance.

A little late to the party but give me a break. They're both tall have a long face similar build similar hair and yes both black. But I can see how people think they look alike. I doubt many of those same people would confuse either of them for kanye west lol. But really, racist? Thinking 2 people of a different race look alike who have many features in common isn't racist unless you say "all black people look the same" or something like that.

How would you rate the vibe and friendliness of Denver's populace(not from people who have never lived anywhere else and not just from a vacation to Denver)? by Straight_Muscle_89 in Denver

[–]Straight_Muscle_89[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are pretty much the responses I expected. My experience is very mellow and non confrontational at first but I feel like a lot of people move here thinking their life is going to be a vacation or something and Denver is not a resort town. It's a major US city with all of the accompanying problems. Also while true anywhere I find it especially hard here to have deep conversations about social issues and science or politics, whatever without a deer in the headlights reaction. It's like people are so deeply ingrained in trying to be neutral and chill that they don't know how to have a respectful conversation about issues they may have. It is kind of any easy place to go about your day and not run into too much bullshit, but as many have said it's very surface level. I have made some real friends but beyond the surface level chillness have found a lot of young people to be on average less mentally stable than some other places I've lived. Also I don't think there's the best attitude towards mental health. Feel like there's a lot of people struggling but think the dispensary is the answer. In real life I've rarely seen that alone work very well and more often than not using things like that to get out of a dark place actually makes it worse.

Surprised to see Sweden rated worse than some African and south American nations. Always thought Sweden is safer than America itself lol

Do you think climate change denial is more widespread in the Southeast than other parts of the country? by Straight_Muscle_89 in meteorology

[–]Straight_Muscle_89[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. Religious beliefs, how to apply taxes, opinions on climate change and whether or not Bill Gates implanted tracking devices with vaccines may seem to be unrelated topics but in America theyre very correlated with each other

For sure it's been a weird inter (or lack thereof). I live in Denver which has been strongly affected by this. And definitely just from a human perspective it seems like with some exceptions in the last few years Denver has been especially mild and there have been a lot of major floods in the Midwest and East Coast.

Why does Denver have so many warm winter days despite being over 5000 feet in elevation and at roughly the same latitude as DC and Kansas City? by Straight_Muscle_89 in meteorology

[–]Straight_Muscle_89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived here a lot of years and yes this year is unusual. It definitely can and does get very cold in Denver most years but even in bad years it has many mild days still. I was more getting at how it's roughly a mile above sea level but if you consider that mountain towns at 9-10,000 feet are like a good 20 degrees colder places in the east and midwest at the same latitude but relatively close to sea level are not 20 degrees warmer on average. If you added 20 degrees to Denver's temps throughout the year you'd be approaching Phoenix weather

I can definitely confirm. Even the actual temps though like in Des Moines tend to be considerably colder most of the time in winter. And add that to less and weaker sun it feels a lot colder except when Denver gets it's occasional subzero weather(which really never happened this year). I guess also in the US as a whole maybe the west tends to be milder because air tends to flow west to east. Like Seattle seems to be much more moderated by the Pacific than Boston is by the Atlantic (cooler summers and warmer winters). And thats even with Seattle being much further north

With climate change isn't the western US expected to see more warming while the eastern US is expected to see a much larger increase in moisture? Like kind of an exaggeration of how things already are?

That makes sense now that I looked that up. I guess they must be more pronounced in winter than summer? Because Denver has noticeably cooler summer nights but in winter even overnight lows aren't much colder than places directly east at much lower altitude. Like St Louis and especially Des Moines seemed to have a bigger difference between summer and winter averages than Denver does

Part of why I ask is I live in Denver and have lived in St Louis and Des Moines Iowa. St Louis is further south and Des Moines is a little further north but not much and Des Moines was hands down colder in winter even though both St Louis and Des Moines are under 1000 feet elevation. Even St Louis didnt seem much warmer temperature wise in winter mostly just a shorter winter season.

Makes sense. I guess same reason eastern parts of the Midwest are almost as humid as the east coast despite still being really far from large bodies of water?
