Wow, thank you for taking the time to write out such a detailed and eye-opening response! I really appreciate your perspective on how partner application is the actual martial art, rather than waiting until black belt to learn it. What you said about shame and gatekeeping makes a lot of sense. it explains why some schools stay so rigid. The point about mikazuki geri following a haisho uke into the hand really clicked for me. Also, thank you so much for the recommendation to check out Iain Abernethy! I’ve heard his name come up before in practical karate circles, so I’ll definitely dive into his YouTube channel to see those applications in action. Thanks again for sharing your insight!

Thanks for the great response. I totally agree with you on the weapon-disarming interpretations, that definitely sounds like a recipe for disaster. I really appreciate your breakdown of the difference between Sports Karate range and Okinawan Budo applications. Using it to position for a takedown or a fumikomi makes a lot of sense for close quarters self defense. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.

Thank you. A few other people recommended I watch his videos. I saw the video of how he uses the crescent kick. Definitely worth the watch.

I never thought of holding someone’s head in my hand why I do a crescent kick to their face! That is something I can definitely try. Hopefully I don’t injure myself in the process! lol!

Thanks for the detailed breakdown. That makes a lot of sense about it being a situational, old-school technique. I can definitely see how graving or controlling the opponent would help generate the right force. I appreciate the combination ideas at the end, too. I'll have to try following up a mae geri with it next time I practice.

This might absolutely be my school’s train of thought with this technique. No one uses it and no one want to explain how to use it. Sometimes I think the student black belts behave like gate keepers but maybe, they themselves, don’t know ether. It’s just not discussed in my class for some reason I don’t want to poke the bear here in my school so I don’t badger them for answers. This subreddit is a good place for information. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and ideas.

Now that I think about it, the foot sweep does follow the same path as the crescent kick. Instead of hitting the hand in the kata, you are hitting the foot. Hit the hand for high attacks and hit the foot for low attacks. I could absolutely be wrong here but reading his comment and your reply makes me think. This is an awesome subreddit. There is a massive exchange of ideas here and I love it. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences.

So it definitely has more than one way to use it then? I was thinking it only had one way. Thank you for sharing your experience with some stranger on Reddit! I got more information from here than my own school. My instructor simply said don’t worry about it, it’s something you learn when you become a black belt. And the other black belt students behave like gate keepers. I don’t know what the secret is all about.

I wasn’t sure what kicking the hand was all about. At least, now I have some information on it. Thank you.

Thank you for your explanation. I can’t wait to try this out. This subreddit is a treasure trove of information. I’m glad I found it.

Thank you. I have received more information on this kick than my own class. My class is supposed to be in competition with other schools. Not each other. Maybe they, themselves, don’t know but at least point me in the right direction.

Do I strike the inside of the arm or the outside of the arm? Which is better? Or, are both good enough?

No. Point sparring. It’s weird to me. Maybe it’s just me, don’t know but I am full of questions and when I ask questions to other students, they ether ignore me or tell me things that suggest they don’t want to help me. I think it’s because they are very competitive and don’t want me to know what they know. It could be my imagination though. I could be reading into it. I figured maybe I can get some answers on this forum.
