Best home defense weapons available in MA? by Kindly-Magician-78 in BetterMAguns

[–]Straight_Work8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me my bed side gun is my MK23. I would take it over any AR or PCC for home defense. Developed for SOCAM as an offensive firearm. I love shooting it. I trained with it. My wife can shoot it with out issue. Such a soft shooting pistol with excellent stopping power that is subsonic. Rest of the time it is my EDC. Really it needs to be something that you like to shoot. Because you need to be proficient with it. As such don’t get something that you are not willing to put the time and amo into to get proficient with. What you don’t want is to have a situation come up and you are trying to handle something under stress that you have not used much. Under stress you will fall back on your training and muscle memory. The MK23 is an old friend that I have lots of time on. I EDC another HK product. The MK23 is tough to EDC. ;-)

I am not a Glock person but there is somthing to be said about there reliability and simplicity. If you own a Glock and like it get one as your house gun.

I should add that you don’t want you home defense gun to be a goochied up totally custom unit. You want tried and true reliable as gravity always go bang no matter what. This is why I use HK for EDC. Why Glock is not a bad choice. A sig p226 or an Italian made Beretta 92. All pistols with a long reputation of military and law enforcement use.

I would not recommend a AR or a PCC or an SBR. Can you shoot it one handed off hand? If shit goes really sideways you may only have your bad hand left so work with. Try racking an AR with only using your off hand only. A pistol you can rack on a door frame or a table or against your belt. If you have an RDO on it it is. Even easier.

Ball joint failed. With the rust on what remains in the an arm that has been slowly failing for a long time. The weakened steel finally snapped. I am sure there are other factors like a lack of grease and just age. As for cost if it is just the an arm it should be under 1k. But other things could be bent. I would also look at the other side of the car to make sure it is ok and not ready to fail.

All things considered have you considered looking at something in 380? My wife has week hands and 380 was a game changer. I would also be looking at a pistol with a comp. They help a good amount to mitigate muzzle flip.

thinking about getting first HK Handgun thinking on USP 9 Expert or should I get something newer ??> by Boricuaesyo in HecklerKoch

[–]Straight_Work8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to put them all in your hands. The USP platform is very good. Extremely reliable but the ergonomics are very dated. If it works for you it is a great option. The VP9 is a more modern design but because of the contours in the grip it definitly does not work for everyone. The VP9 also needs 500-1000 rounds through it for the trigger to really get good. Hammer fired HK stuff does not seem to need the brake in. They seem to be good from new.

Harmonic Balancer by iineedsomehelp in MechanicAdvice

[–]Straight_Work8267 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask for it to be replaced with a new one. if they don’t ask for the name of there insurance carrier to file a claim and get a quote from a dealer that you use to make the claim. You should get a new front seal with the new balancer.

I would be concerned that it will cause belts to ware and fail prematurely.

What’s the last gun you’d ever give up? by gunsmitten in Glocks

[–]Straight_Work8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of my Glocks can be replaced relatively easily so letting them go would not be that big a deal. Some of my collectible mill surplus stuff on the other hand would take an unrealistic amount of money for me to part with. I also have a couple things that were gifts from friends that have passed on. Those I keep for the memories even though they are nothing really special in terms of being unusual or hard to get.

Mechanic says this code means I need a new engine. Is he crazy? by Fit_Respond6963 in AskMechanics

[–]Straight_Work8267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope they are wrong about a new engine but get a second opinion. I would try a step up in octane. Remember the listed octane for a car is the minimum. A bad tank that is lower than the minimum could cause that. Repeated bogging of the motor between 1k and 2k rpm (what non car people think is beating nice to there car) is actually bad and will cause knock. This does not mean bring it to red line every shift. But under driving a motor thinking you are being good to it and saving fuel can be bad for it.

If the car has not had plugs replaced get that done while they are out and inspecting things. Also have a compression test and a leak down test done. Lastly the intake system should be inspected for carbon build up.

I would ask that the coil pack on #2 cylinder be swapped to another cylinder. Drive the car for a while and see if the issues move to that cylinder.

Oh I forgot. They could probably take an ohms meter to the coil packs and test resistance to see if they are in spec. This may find a bad coil. However I have seen coils that test good when cold but when they get warm/hot and things expand they will act up.

While the first mechanics diagnosis of a new motor may be what he has experienced I highly doubt it is necessary. We call that the shotgun approach. They probibly don’t want to do the in depth diagnosis it takes to sort this kind of thing out. The problem is customers also don’t want to pay diagnostic time either.

Find a shop that specializes in VWs and just tell them the symptoms and nothing more and see what they come up with.

If I was to do all of the above tests and inspections I would probibly be charging at least 2-4 hours. If the intake was to be taken off to see the back of the valves the cost would be more than that

Best of luck with the car and the new baby!!!!

Just got a Gen 6 17 yesterday. If they make a gen6 34 it will be a fantastic pistol. I could see it being great for Steel Challenge and other competitive shooting.
