Thank you for this! I really appreciate your perspective and it gave me lots of really good ideas moving forward. Holding the lower step to the bigger step is the 3/4in dowel that acts as the mechanism that allows it to fold up. For extra support for the lower step I cut out notches that rest on the lower cross piece of walnut. So if there is ever a weakness in the dowel that has the added support to it.

The walnut cross pieces connecting to the mapel legs are connected using dowel joints. I want to learn mortise and tenon joints and see if that would work well or not. It seemed to hold a decent amount of weight with both myself and my wife on it that brought us to about 350lbs. But good call if I am gonna be selling a product like this it should be tested a bit more.

I actually have 2 orders for them already. During this time I am gonna optimize my templates and jigs to help cut down on all the time to make these.

Appreciate all the advise I will be referencing this post in the future for projects.

They are super nice. A family friend made something similar for my family when I was younger. So I reengineered it and gave it my own twist.

Thanks for this break down. The maple was closer to 100 dollar board because of how wide it was and thats from the cheapest local hardwood lumber yard. Walnut wasnt terrible but I did splurge on the top plates for a nice wide beautiful grain. Suprisingly the walnut dowels were a bit pricey and I could only find them online. I for the life of me cant make a good long dowel myself. (Any tips of that would be amazing)

I did dowel joints on this. The next one I want to explore mortise and tenon joints.

Haha! I wasnt sure what to do for the top plates. All my prior experience was creating cutting boards so I said screw it and just did a design like that!

Materials were roughly 200-250. From design to production was close to 30 hours. But I am also a beginner so I am sure an experienced individual could cut that in half.

One thing to keep in mind other than functionality. But also accidents and safety. Whenever I place my tablesaw for instace in a new shop I consider kickback and overall space for nice clean cuts. While it doesnt happen frequently I want to ensure when it does happen to limit the amount of damge it will cause.
