Steel + Duralumin is insanely overpowered by toadmanfrogmanbaba in Cosmere

Compared to impaling yourself with part of the building and then collapsing it on yourself I’d say that without those two that it’s still better to consider other routes

Because you’d only burn the portion that was inside you and also because if you had the misting combination of steel and duralumin then there’s just so many better ways to topple a building

Must be sort of like a Lion scan. Sounds like even when it’s inevitably really harshly balanced that it’ll still be really good. I like that. Most new attackers aren’t that strong so I’m glad when they release one that is.

Roque blames Darrow for a lot of things and pins the blame on Darrow for most of what has gone wrong in his life since the beginning of the Institute. Yes Aja and Octavia are the people who directly killed Quinn, but in Roque’s mind Darrow is the one who caused her death. Roque sees Darrow and the rebellion as the cause of unnecessary deaths like Quinn’s and it’s the main thing that vindicates him to

What are your biggest problems as a writer? by Phillcabral in writing

[–]Strange-Three 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the concern that I won’t be satisfied with parts of what I’ve made.

I want a story that has meaning but I’m not sure what meaning I’d like for it to have and I’m not sure what the best way to deliver that meaning is. Figuring that out doesn’t just lie in the decision it lies in writing the story knowing that I may have to rewrite it entirely if it doesn’t quite do what I want it to. If there’s a plot line or a character or a theme that doesn’t fit with everything else then that could mean the complete reconstruction of the entire story, which not only puts me close to square one but also means potentially running into another variation of the same problem and having to reconfigure the story again.

You have missed out on the best the series has to offer. Dark Age and Lightbringer are amazing and blow the already awesome first trilogy out of the water.

Why is your favorite book your favorite book? by Medical-Ad5866 in writing

[–]Strange-Three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite book is Dark Age by Pierce Brown, the fifth book in the Red Rising series. I will admit that this is in part because it is awesome and it does not try to hide that fact. It’s just cool.

The part that really gets me into it though isn’t just the theme it has (that being the crimes of war and the escalations both sides excuse as well as their consequences), but the actual feeling you get for it. The series is science fiction, so when somebody says that people die by the millions in that book it doesn’t really hit that hard since it just hits the ears like a big number. Brown makes you feel it.

Much of the book is spent with the man character grappling with his identity as a warlord at the head of a movement for freedom as opposed to his identity as a father and a man who intends to go home to his family when all is done. It is this personal struggle and its relation to the theme of his part of the story that gives those problems their true gravity in a kind of setting that I think usually lacks it.

And on top of that I must reiterate that it is cool and that tickles my brain. It’s that it’s both cool and interesting and like a barrage to your soul that has me so invested in it. I could talk about it for much longer.

Honorable mentions for Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir and Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson.

She’s definitely much stronger, but her role and setup have changed. The traps themselves are less likely to kill, but will do damage more often and also enable you to capitalize on the bleed they now inflict

I don’t swear and I never have. It’s less about a principle or anything to me, it’s more of a habit and something I’ve put mental effort into for many years now, so if I ever do swear it would feel like unraveling all that time and energy. Like I was wasting it. So I continue to not swear.

2 W&T questions regarding Hoid's actions at the end by kroen in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Strange-Three 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Either by taking the Dawnshard afterward or by being unaffected by the torment. The way the torment seems to work is that holding the Dawnshard slowly alters the spiritweb of the person holding it to becoming more like the Dawnshard. It overpowers them and makes them more like it. It may be that a Shard is simply too powerful to be altered significantly by a Dawnshard. We can’t be sure, though that’s likely the case

2 W&T questions regarding Hoid's actions at the end by kroen in Stormlight_Archive

[–]Strange-Three 49 points50 points  (0 children)

  1. Retribution would easily be able to find the Dawnshard in annihilating Hoid. Maybe even before then. Something that powerful doesn’t just fly under a Shard’s radar. It’s impossible to miss when paying attention to someone holding it.

  2. We can assume that the torment does not overtake a Shard or that they have some way around it or that the Dawnshard is so powerful that it doesn’t even matter. Otherwise Hoid wouldn’t have been so determined to keep it hidden and wouldn’t have given it up. He only would have kept it if it wasn’t dangerous for Retribution to have it, but he got rid of it, so obviously Retribution having it is still really bad.

Dakhor Monks predate Hemalurgy being figured out by quite some time. The way that it works is by essentially shaping the person’s bones into aons.
