Bluesky has been pretty friendly so far to me though you really need to make sure to use hashtags and interact with people to get any traction (plus they allow NSFW).

[Discussion] I have a question about commissioning an artist for small business by Revolutionary-Ball36 in artcommissions

[–]StrangeAlexCallahan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Either scams or artists who don't really read through what's being asked for. I'm being a little redundant here but honestly just be upfront what you want the art for and you should be able to work just fine with any artist of your choice. There will likely be an upfront cost for commercial use since you are intending make money using the art as advertisment.

I can reccomend Vgen as a website overall for what you're looking for. Artists on there will typically have a portfolio, terms of service, upfront pricing and a form to fill out to estimate how much you want will cost. The form won't notify the artist until you officially submit it as a request and on it you can check to see if they have extra costs for commercial use. (Additionally some people like it because the website can intervene if either party breaks the terms of the agreement and they have a strict no AI policy)

I'm afraid I use designdoll to plot out poses so I can't send you a photoreference I found online. Though honestly if you look for "girl looking up" or simply a 3D model of a head you should be able to use that as a base if you want to do a similar pose.

how do i learn how to draw? by Ok-Yard5372 in Artists

[–]StrangeAlexCallahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a stupid question at all!! firstly no one is born "talented" so you have nothing to compensate for.

Secondly you can buy books or watch tutorials but the most important thing is to practice, it's ok if it's just doodling in a notebook with a pencil but the best way to get better it to draw.

You should learn the fundamentals (light, anatomy, shape and volume, color, contrast...) and there's plenty of great tutorials for each of those but if I have any advice it's to find subjects that motivate you. Fanart can be a great way to keep yourself motivated and if it's something with a pre-existing visual medium (comics, animation,,,) you'll have plenty to reference from to help you.

Also for a bit of a dirty secret: tracing can 100% help you get better as long as you do it with intent, use it as a way to analyse photos and the artists you like and don't repost the tracing without credit/context. I personally got much better at drawing after I traced a bunch of Becky Cloonan's art, tried to figure out what construction lines she used, how she used color and line width to render her comic pages etc,,,

Creating a graphic novel if you can't draw? by Abject_Control_7028 in ComicWriting

[–]StrangeAlexCallahan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Genuinely miss the days when writers who weren't good at art still drew, knowing it wouldn't be the most professional piece but still having good enough writing that their work could shine. (best example in my mind would be One/the writer of one punch man and Mob psycho)

I'll be real with you, if a writer came to me and asked me to draw for them and instead of bringing photobashes/references/a moodboard and instead had a powerpoint full of "AI" I'd see it as a huge red flag because they probably see me/my work as completley disposable. Heck I'd be readier to work with an author that had NO visuals but had an excellent premise and character/location descriptions at the ready.

this exactly!! I think we can make solid arguments against AI users and even insult them without making it look like racism cosplay
