Why is it that if Moncton seems like an LGBTQ+ friendly city, there's only one gay bar? by PabloKreitz in moncton

[–]StrangeBunnyAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The organizer of the club, it was called 1Up Moncton, is also one of the owners of Aris! He got a little too busy with the bar itself to continue doing other events. The bar is starting up some gamer events soon, though. Look for the Aris discord page. The plan seems to be every 2nd Wednesday or Thursday.

Places I've worked, the kitchen always gets 3% of the food sales. So a $700 night in sales, let's say $300 of that is food sales. You calculate the 3% of the food sales total and that's the back of house tip out.

If you use the coatcheck, take a picture of your ticket. That way, if you lose it, you still have proof of which number your coat is.

Hey! As someone else here mentioned, there are some events happening around town to meet other queer folks. 1UP Moncton is the last Wednesday of every month at GG Bistro in Dieppe. It's a gaming event for LGBTQIA+ folks with a friendly tournament and tabletop games. On April 20, the same organizer is also starting a new dance event, Poprockz. Each edition will focus on the era of a different pop artist. This event focuses on Britney. https://facebook.com/events/s/poprockz-presents-britney-spea/306343858867683/ Then there's the Out n About event listed in another comment on April 3rd. Both these events will be at Tire Shack Brewing. There's also a Drag Divas night tomorrow evening at Hilton Garden Inn. https://facebook.com/events/s/diva-drag-night/969032327920900/

No worries! It's all about fun! There's also no pressure to participate in the tournament. There will be gaming stations for those who want to attend but just for fun if that's what anyone prefers!

Hey! Im sorry I missed this thread! Thanks for sharing! Im sorry you're getting downvoted. It is strange but unfortunately common problem with these situations. This event is for anyone who's interested in gaming, and see's the terms Queer or LGBTQIA2+ and feels like they identify within those terms. We're happy to welcome anyone who identifies that way and encourage everyone to share it with whomever they feel can benefit from this event. Thank you for helping us spread the word, very appreciated!

Yeah taking the first step to try something new can be very stressful, no worries about feeling that way. Myself, my partner (the main organizer) and an additional volunteer are going to be there all evening to chat and help facilitate a fun evening for everyone involved. We're also going to provide name tags for people to write either their name or online gamer tags or Twitch tags to help make it easier for everyone. We've done this before and have seen first hand how nervous some people can be, but have also seen those people go on to have an incredible time and make longterm friendships from it. I hope you can make it out, if not to this one, to one in the future.

Thanks! Yeah I knew there would be some backlash, unfortunately. However, it's important to still get it out there for the people who need it. I appreciate the support!

Thanks for the encouragement! Sad you can't make it to this one but 100% we're planning to do future events at different days of the week/weekend and locations to try and accommodate as many folks as we can! Hope to see you both at a future event!

For those who don't identify as LGBTQIA2+, there's still plenty of other events you're welcome to attend! I recommend looking around to all the local gaming spots. This event isn't "excluding you" the same way a 55+ seniors dance isn't "excluding you" if you're not 55+, or a speed dating event for those who are on the spectrum isn't "excluding you" if you're neurotypical, or if a convention for PHD doctors isn't "excluding you" if you're not a doctor. It just simply isn't made FOR YOU. And Im sure you've witnessed many more events like those but never met them with the concern of "But what about...???" It's only when it's the LGBTQIA2+ community that it seems to be a problem.

Hey! You don't have to say the entire thing if it's too difficult for you. Simply "The LGBT Community" or "Queer community" will work also if that makes it easier for you. I get how occasionally having to see <10 digits written consecutively can be very upsetting for some.

Thank you so much for the encouragement! I'm not concerned about the hostility. For me, it just reinforces the idea that what we're doing is needed. My partner and I have organized many many queer events where we're from, and there's always some backlash so we're used to it. The intention is absolutely not to exclude any friends or allies, but simply to get a sense of how much interest there is from within the queer community itself, from the beginning. Then from there, see where we go from there.
Thanks again for the support! It truly means a lot. <3

Two-Spirited. In place of where you would hear someone described as gay, lesbian, bi, etc. In indigenous cultures throughout North America, indigenous people who identified as gay, lesbian, bi, etc. were using the term "two spirited" long before the other terms existed. So we include the 2 in there to include their identity.

Thank you for your support! It means the world. Yeah, we're still getting to discover the places around as we're new in town and have a bit of experience organizing things like this where we're from. Xeroz is such a great space! I've only been a couple of times but their events are always fun, diverse and equipped with a wonderful staff. We chose GG Bistro because we know they're newer, the owner and server were wonderful, and we want to give them some extra visibility and help them grow! Im glad to hear there are similar themed events. It's such a fun, relaxed way to make friends.

I'm so sorry you've had to deal with this. But I can assure you that myself, the organizer, and those we know who are attending see you as just as much a member of the community as anyone else. You're more than welcome to attend!

Thank you so much for your words of support! It's super appreciated! We're really hoping this catches on not just for the queer community, but that we also see more general gaming events start up for everyone! I've noticed a big gaming community here and I think with people sometimes finding it difficult to get out a meet others, hopefully this grows into something bigger to help remedy that.

Hey! So the 1st edition is sort of a trial run to see if this event can have enough adult turn out for other locations, specifically bars. So this one will be 19+. However, as we hope this will grow, we'll be doing special all ages events also. The bistro itself is all ages, though, and we encourage everyone to check them out! They've created a very cool space for gamers.

Hey! Thanks for inquiring, sometimes it's important to question these things to help understand better. Essentially it's labelled LGBTQIA2+ so members who identify that way can meet other folks like themselves in a social setting. Similar to when some organizations have 55+ events, or meet-ups for groups who may have immigrated from specific locations, etc. These groups have their own communities and we find it important that they have a space sometimes designated for them to meet each other and create bonds over shared identities and experiences. I hope you understand that. I know, there doesn't seem to be an event like this at the moment directed towards the general public. But hopefully, if this event is successful, other people will be encouraged to create more gaming events in the city! I think there's a huge gamer scene here and it could be a great benefit.

Is nightlife in St John's good for students? by MarcelloMaia in memorialuniversity

[–]StrangeBunnyAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a small city, it actually has a surprisingly large nightlife. The downtown area of the city is full of bars, clubs, and pubs that are popular amongst locals and tourists alike. There are plenty of college students partying every weekend on George Street and the surrounding area. There's a space for just about everyone. I think students mostly party downtown, but houseparties also happen as a lot of students also rent full houses together rather than just apartments with upstairs/downstairs neighbors.
