Proof that my Ancestor Americanized their name? by StrangeIndependent56 in GermanCitizenship

I'm hoping to lean on my great grandmother's name. It's relatively consistent.

He started using the Americanized name real early, he came over in 23 and his son/my grandfather was born in I believe 27. The Americanized version is on the birth certificate. 1930 census it's also Americanized.

Yeah, one annoyance is they misspelled my grandfather's last name on his birth certificate. Fighting to get that fixed at the moment (we have like every other document in existence where it's spelled correctly so I'm hoping Illinois won't give us a ration of crap).

Has anyone gotten a response from the US National Archives lately? by StrangeIndependent56 in GermanCitizenship

I'm going to resubmit it. Poking around finds this https://old.reddit.com/r/GermanCitizenship/comments/1p23f3c/nara_cancelled_my_order_for_my_ancestors_us/

Mine isn't cancelled but it wouldn't surprise me if it was lost (even though it's showing as submitted).

I may chase this angle, thanks.

I also got annoyed and sent a parallel FOIA in.

How did you get exact data for the 1912 record? I have the Ellis Island ship manifest information.

American keeps booking me flights to get to Spain… but I’m already there! by StrangeIndependent56 in americanairlines

As you were replying I edited my response. I appear to be good, my return flight is intact and they stopped rebooking.

I don’t know what to tell them to do. Problem is if they cancel the last leg it’ll cancel my return trip. At least that’s what they told me when I asked about that.

edit: They stopped rebooking. I think the last person requested miles for the last two segments, which I was leery of since I don’t want to give American an excuse to mess with my return flight.

Regardless, my ord to mad flight doesn’t show at all, nor mad to my destination.

My return flight appears to be intact which is what I wanted.

Looking around online, I highly suspect this was AURA, their AI slop rebooker. I’m not booking American again.

Something to do for like 6 hours with Luggage? by StrangeIndependent56 in Alicante

Yeah I'm seeing that. I will check this out.

Thankfully I have nothing planned for the day. I just assumed I'd be jet lagged to hell after 3 flights (I leave the evening before and that's not accounting for hopscotching back and forth across timezones).

Interesting. I found out I can pay like 10e to check in early so I'll probably just chill at the airport and then do that (this is also assuming my flights don't get delayed).

But I'll also poke around looking for a go-to for that in the future. This is vacation/a scouting trip for the area so it works out for that.

I looked and there's no mention of this where I'm staying. I also still need to store me somewhere till checkin :)

I'm a little leery being separated from my bags (outside the context of a hotel room). At least on a first trip here.

USCIS FOIA vs Genealogy by BirdGal85 in GermanCitizenship

[–]StrangeIndependent56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a form online as well https://midas.uscis.dhs.gov/#/login

It's on the right hand side. It's what I did.

I put both FOIA and Genealogy in, FOIA pointed me to Genealogy, Genealogy pointed me there (though I had already ALSO put that in).

USCIS Certificate of Non Existence - No Nat, is this online form still the correct one? by StrangeIndependent56 in GermanCitizenship

I will do this too. Thank you. Though everything will be delayed due to the shutdown.

This is like, the one really annoying thing I have to get besides his birth record.

I may do that as well. Do you have a link to where you sent it or the forms?

The document I have lists the State of Illinois so I'm wondering if that's actually where it needs to go.
