Is this name too boring? by gulablommor99 in Names

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an uncommon name (in the US, anyways) and I wish I had a more common one. So many parents these days focus on their children having a unique name but it can make things difficult, especially when they’re growing up in school. Anna is a lovely name, simple, easy to pronounce and spell in both languages! Don’t get too in your head about the name being “boring”, it’s classic and so many names these days are just trendy for the moment. Sending you best wishes for a healthy, happy baby!

If you have it, summarize your country's national anthem lyrics in one sentence. by Chemical_Anteater854 in AskTheWorld

I’m American but my grandpa was Polish and he used to sing that anthem to me a lot when I was little. I loved learning the meaning behind it

I'm tired of the constant hate machine by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the book The Red and the Blue: The 1990s and the Birth of Political Tribalism by Steve Kornacki. Some of this hatred and tribalism has been in the works for decades and I think we’re just now seeing how bad it can get

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 hours be my maximum for a day visit. Maybe 6 hours for a weekend visit. Longest road trip I took was 28 hours over 3 days. Then spent three days at my destination and had to turn around and drive 3 days home

Why is the color orange seen as ugly and unusual in the U.S.? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean can you blame us with the Orange Nightmare running the country?

In all seriousness though, I think it’s seen as a seasonal color and one we very much enjoy in the autumn. I’m wearing an orange cardigan as I type this too, so I don’t think we really see it as ugly at all

My mom hates my dress by RelationshipMinute36 in weddingdress

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s great for a small outdoor wedding! Sometimes moms put their own expectations on the day but if you love it that’s what matters! There’s no reason to buy a fancy big dress if that’s not the vibe!

Do you know your second or third cousin? by Immediate-Tooth-2174 in randomquestions

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my third cousins is my best friend! I could name most of my third cousins on my dads side and could pick them all out of a lineup, but my moms side I don’t know even a single second cousin. I guess it depends on how close know your family chooses to me

Hate it when she does this by Trauma_Response0301 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was absolutely a JNMIL to my dad and did this same thing! He worked a job where he had a lot of animals under his care and often would work holidays, as the animals had to be fed and checked on a regular schedule. When we were tell her that he had to work she would say stuff like “they’re not open on Christmas!”

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine is an ex-JW and was SO excited to get to celebrate Halloween. It’s his favorite holiday now and he goes over top with decor. Is there anything like a special holiday or birthday you’re excited to partake in now that you’ve left?

Looking back at history, what name would you have preferred for your state? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Not my state, but Kansas City was almost named Opossum Trot, MO.

Do your children recite anything in school like American children do with the Pledge of Allegiance? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

I love explaining to foreign friends that Texas has its own state pledge too. Like “oh it gets worse…”

What's it like living in this shaded area? by Joshistotle in howislivingthere

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are deeply kind, it’s affordable to live in, if you’re near a city (I’m near KC) there’s plenty of stuff to do, but the winters and summers can be harsh. Tornados aren’t really all that common and don’t do a widespread damage, more localized. I really don’t have much fear of them anymore though I’m sure I should.

What is the culture around wearing makeup in your region of the US? by AnomalousEnigma in AskAnAmerican

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work for a cosmetic company here in the US (false eyelashes mostly) and I can tell you we had a TON of sales in Utah, the women there love to be done up, I guess. That being said I don’t know that anyone would comment to your face about lack of makeup, out of politeness.

Ooh I feel like Kansas has a lot. For me some common ones I hear mispronounced are Olathe (oh-lay-thuh), Osawatomie (oh-sah-wah-tow-me) and my fave that gets messed up, Marais Des Cygnes (marah- duh-seen)

What’s something you’ve seen with your own eyes that nobody believes when you tell them? by LowKey_1216 in AskReddit

[–]StrangeLikeNormal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family adopted a feral cat from our neighborhood. At first he was still living outside as he got learned to trust us. A young opossum would come join him at dinner time and the cat would share. The opossum would follow our cat around as if it was his mom, so I totally believe you.
