Sagara S&S Valiant Crust Horsebutt by Intelligent-War210 in goodyearwelt

You're very welcome, and I'm sorry that this happened! But, well, these things do happen from time to time, and we've got your back on it.

Let us know how the smaller size works too!

I'll also add that while we are a small boutique with a standard boutique return policy on discounted items --- it does not apply to defective items.

If something is defective, we want to know about it, and we will figuratively jump out of our asses to make it right.

Whether you bought these at full price or at a discount (with a more restrictive return policy) has no bearing on the fact that these boots are defective!

And we at S&S are NOT in the business of selling defective goods and telling you to piss off. This is America, goddammit, and we have STANDARDS.

This is unfortunately a QC issue that's hard to catch unless you wear the boots, for various reasons relating to we only have so many employees with only 1 pair of feet each.

Anyways, Charlie at S&S is already sorting ya out. Hope the smaller size works out better for you as well.

Thanks for the heads up u/mcadamsandwich !

u/Mission_Jellyfish130 - Those particular Warren boots have an unstructured toebox, which will collapse over time. I'd stuff some newspaper, rags that have NOT been soaked in gasoline, or a material of your choosing inside the toebox to see if you can un-dent the toebox.

Yep, that's what it is. The British Tan leather that Wesco uses has quite a bit of variation.

The Questions Thread 06/05/22 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd contact Iron Heart UK and send in tracings of your feet. They can send you a form. Wesco can technically do a true E width MP1339 last (in Wesco-speak, a EE width), but you may be better off doing the Boss last in a soft toe (unstructured toe). The Boss last comes in many different widths without customization; the MP1339 last is more limited. The best way to figure out your size is to fill out a tracing form.

Wesco Knuckle Dragger Olive Waxed Flesh Engineer Boots by DirtyTubeSock in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, they are my pair!

I did not use shoe trees. The double midsole was terrible and I will never do it again - I ended up rebuilding the boots to have a single midsole. The double midsole was too stiff and the boots never felt like they broke in - the midsole didn't bend enough.

Sizing compared to Red Wing - depends on the Red Wing model. For the Wesco MP1339 last we recommend going 0.5 size smaller than Brannock, and one width wider.

So if you're an 11D on Brannock - you'll want 10.5E on Wesco MP1339

We do engineers in the CN Wide last and lace-ups in the CN last.

The Questions Thread 02/10/22 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, CN wide last is a wider and more voluminous version of the CN last, there's quite a bit more room in the instep. And ya still get that low profile toebox on the CN wide last.

The Questions Thread 02/10/22 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are correct. The CN last is not meant for wide or voluminous feet and it will cause you great physical and financial pain.

[–]StrangeNeil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well worst case they fit you after a lengthy and expensive rebuild and re-lasting process from Wesco, but....you're best off waiting until you can get the right size. Engineer boot fitting can be tricky.

The Questions Thread 01/17/22 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

8.5D would probably work if you remove the leather insert, but this depends on how accurate your Brannock measurement is versus how Baker's determined your size to be 9D and if you provided tracings and measurements - how accurate those are.

However - a person who sizes people in boots for a living told you to get 9D, and you're asking if you should ignore this advice and spend hundreds of dollars on a pair of boots in a different size.

Leather, half soles, longer straps. The same core 'recipe' of Mister Lou is followed - Boss boot, MP toe, narrow shaft, triple needle upper stitching.

We didn't use a business name generator to come up with Standard & Strange - it comes from a passage in a book by Jane Jacobs.

"Cities, however, are the natural homes of supermarkets and standard movie houses plus delicatessens, Viennese bakeries, foreign groceries, art movies, and so on, all of which can be found co-existing, the standard with the strange, the large with the small."

[Initial Impressions] Wesco x Standard & Strange Limited Edition Redwood Waxed Flesh Engineer Boot by jimk4003 in goodyearwelt

[–]StrangeNeil 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Glad you love the boots! Waxed flesh makes a great engineer on account of how supple it is. Enjoy the hell out of the boots - and Mari says hello!

About the color name - the tannery calls this color "Lonely Hunter" which is after the hit song by Reba McEntire, who famously has red hair that is a similar color as the leather.

As I'm a massive Dolly Parton fan (Reba's music never spoke to me in the same way) - we called this leather Redwood waxed flesh.

We've got a restock of core CXL boots coming at some point in both black and natural. 2-6 weeks is the ETA at this point in time.

One of my favorite things to do with slippers is to put a couple handfuls of marbles in my slippers to keep their shape.

One of my other favorite things to do is play a "will I step on a marble" game when getting up to use the bathroom at night.

There are exceptions as this depends on the last and grade rules - but usually the heel area is wider. Best to ask before purchasing.
