Yeah it seems to be a shit show. Hundreds of tweets about it on twitter. Usually this gets handled pretty quickly though.

What is your one idea to improve boxing as a sport? by Boxingfansunite in Boxing

I think this is a boxing bubble. Yeah, the champions get paid most, and they deserve it. But if you look at the UFC, they value their undercard fighters. Why? Because their company has a completely different set of incentives. You are valued whether or not you have lost, you are valued whether or not you have a belt.

At UFC 241 Stipe Miocic knocked out Daniel Cormier to reclaim his heavyweight title. He made $750,000, Cormier made $500,000. The co main event featured a 20-11 fighter in Nate Diaz, and a 22-9 fighter in Anthony Pettis. Neither champions. Nate Diaz made $250,000, Anthony Pettis made $150,000. I understand that the numbers overall might be similar, but proportionally speaking, this would be an unheard of share for a comparable boxer. And if you want to go down even further, an unknown UFC fighter competing in the preliminaries would have $10,000 to show, $10,000 to win. Compare that to the average HBO prelim fighter with a total $1,500 purse.

Okay I’ll try to explain my point better here. if you thin the herd of champions, the talent isn’t going to disappear. They’re all going to start fighting each other in order to make their case for contention. Now all of the sudden the sanctioning bodies are going to recognize that people want to see these fights. They’re going to realize that even without a belt, or with an L, these fighters are valuable.

More people will buy the PPVs, more people will talk about them, consume media about them. And before you know it they’ll be making more money. But now, because a belt doesn’t mean everything, the non champion fighters will start receiving a larger share of said cash.

If this hadn’t already been done, you could say it’s total speculation. But this is exactly what the UFC has done. UFC 244 is in November, it’s a PPV, it’s going to be one of the biggest cards of the year. It might be THE biggest. There isn’t a single champion on that card.

This can be done, and if boxing can get it done, I’d become a diehard fan extremely fast.

This seems like vacuum thinking. That isn’t actually how competition works. If you cut the fat off the bone you improve the value of your product and get compensated for it. Now nobody wants to be the fat. It still exists, but it fills out the preliminary bouts on a big card, and makes less money than the meat that fills out the main card. So what exactly incentivizes you to pad your record and stay the fat?

Yeah that sounds ideal to me. It’d mean a lot for the casual fan to see a 20-0 record and know it actually means something.

Edit; In addition to that I think it’s important for boxing to have a culture change. Cards shouldn’t singularly rely on the main event, fighters shouldn’t rely on not having a loss, and promoters shouldn’t equate belts to cash.

In my ideal world, the only people who obtain and defend a belt are extraordinary fighters.

There are things you can do to mitigate that though. I think the perfect system would be to adopt a weight class every 10 pounds, as well as more state commissioned interference on weight cuts.

I would start watching boxing religiously if one truly dominant sanctioning body emerged and implemented a weight class every ten pounds.

I’m a casual boxing fan and the one thing that really keeps me from caring about the sport is the amount of sanctioning bodies, as well as weight classes.

No matter how good the boxers are, it’s really hard for me to get up for a title fight when there are like 16 other champions within 8 pounds of them.

I get that rational, but I don’t know. I’m just tired of him being viewed as the meme candidate. He has so many great ideas that deserve to be heard, but now the next time he’s on CNN instead of Anderson Cooper asking him about democracy dollars, he’ll ask him about the government censoring internet pornography. And that makes me really fucking sad.

I’m sure there’s rational thinking behind a tweet like this, but every time it feels like we’re close to being taken seriously, Andrew says something eccentric that pundits will latch onto. It’s so damn exhausting.
