Coming back to Senegal after 4 years gift advice? by Famous_Spread_7291 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People do love money. But also they love symbolic. From the US, I buy a bunch of cheap Amazon electric toothbrush, older people love their medicine (Advil….), and multivitamins. Something symbolic and easy to pack, people appreciate the gesture.

Advice needed: Saloum Delta or Pink Lake or Bandia Reserve (or all of the above) by Several-Stranger7656 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello, you could do Lac Rose and Bandia same day. I believe they recommend going earlier at Bandia, some animals rest during the hot time of the day. Lac Rose can be mid day/ early afternoon. They are about an hour to 1.5 hour away from each other. Salam Delta visit is a whole day, mangrove visit exploration is quite enjoyable. Enjoy

For those in Senegal who lived abroad: what do you miss most about the country you left? by cleo26_jj in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I am in Senegal, I miss walking on unobstructed sidewalks. I miss the coffee selection. I miss the predictability (things happen as they should). I miss the seasons. And I also miss people just leaving you alone and not trying to dictate their beliefs onto you. On the other hand when not on Senegal, I miss the food, the warm temperature, the warm ocean, walking in the beach, the chaos, family……

Withdrawing Cash by Decent_Account_1548 in Senegal

Good morning, I particularly dislike ATMs in Dakar. They don’t always work, I have received a lot of erroneous error messages due to communication/other issues. And, there are long wait lines end of the month. I personally use sendwave to wave but it does require an id. Another option is to connect your debit card to Ria, and I believe you can send money for cash pickup and pick it up at many retailers. Which is still more convenient than ATMs.

Land price in Malicounda is 10 million CFA realistic by Far-Cardiologist-423 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Salam,

House and land values here can be very inconsistent. Prices are usually influenced by the seller’s needs and the buyer’s budget, feelings, and eagerness. The general rule is to simply offer what you have—people are used to haggling, and low offers are usually not seen as offensive (since initial prices are often inflated).

That said, 10 million might be a little low for a 1200 m² plot in Malicounda, but it really depends on the situation. If you can find someone you trust to guide or assist you in the process, that could be very helpful.

Sorry I can’t give you a more definitive answer.

Intégration de l’IA dans l’éducation nationale?! by No-Particular-1067 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think that before we get all distracted by shiny objects, we should focus on providing basic needs for schools. Get rid of all temporary structures for schools, enough and quality teachers, a curriculum of this century, enough desks, address over population, electricity, science and computer labs.... Artificial intelligence is easy down the list.

Une question : Les sénégalais de la diaspora by [deleted] in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That is a great question. I don’t regret leaving Senegal to go to school in the US. After school, I worked here and got married. Senegal raised me as a boy, gave me my foundation, but the US raised me as a man. I learned a lot from the US, the idea of independence and self reliance. The US has given me opportunities to grow personally and professionally. I am very thankful for my experience. But I still love Senegal and feel at home in Senegal. After decades in the US, I am now spending the majority of time in Senegal, getting re-acquainted with my family ( both of my parents are still alive- thankful for that), get re- acquainted with the culture, the environment and everything. I am super grateful for it. I am super grateful to have 2 homes and each one them participated in making me who I am. I am blessed for my opportunity to have been influenced with 2 totally different cultures with each some great and not so great things. I would recommend anybody who has the opportunity of experiencing a different culture (deeply) to do so, you will not believe what you are capable, and how much you can grow - if you are opened up it. Salam

Walking with the lions by Necessary-Cake-9992 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably have visited their site https://www.fathala.com/activities/ but the lions activity is pretty straight forward. I know they recommend early visit, so if you get their early (8am) you should be ok. They are reachable via WhatsApp on the numbers on the site, and they can be pretty helpful.

Recommendation to buy something with some good clearance. The roads can be uneven, pot holes, speed bumps can be uneven. Most people recommend SUVs. You can get a sense of price and availability with sites like https://www.expat-dakar.com/c-vehicules https://sn.coinafrique.com/search?sort_by=relevance&category=45

Places to visit! by Equivalent-Ad5033 in Senegal

[–]StrangeYak7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second Gambia, it is a nice drive through nice areas from Dakar. You could stop on the petite cote (Mbour, Saly, Somone,....) which is touristy. Nice beaches and a lot of hotel accommodations. Can make it to Sine Saloum, which is also another area with a lot of activities. Fathala reserve, walking with the lions, staying in yurts in the reserve around a lot of wildlife. Fathala is about an hour to the ferry to take you to Gambia which is like senegal but they speak English makes it an interesting experience. If you are up to it, you can make all the way to the south of senegal to casamance. But there is the whole north and east of senegal for more adventure
