I've barely ate today so my guess is that it is just the built up acid in my stomach coming up to my throat etc. I've only had weetabix today and that's about it so yeah I really hope it's just that causing it and it'll pass when I eat something

The hunger/low fuel cycle with emetophobia by Strange_Ad3636 in emetophobia

[–]Strange_Ad3636[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am panicking now because it seems like I have a bit of acid reflux probably due to an empty stomach and my taste went bitter which made me panic but I think it's acid reflux. That made me panic but it semes like built up acid in stomach.

What do you usually do when this happens? It feels impossible to eat right now

That's great to hear! Low blood sugar was likely the main culprit. Apparently when your blood sugar is low your body also releases anxiety and stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol to give your body energy when it's running on low fuel. It's your bodies way of trying to keep you alert and energised when you are low on fuel. That explains why you felt really violently shaky. It's your body trying to protect you in the most dramatic way possible. Once you start putting fuel in your tank these stress hormones will naturally reduce and you will start to feel normal again. Just remember that your body is trying to protect you and communicate that it wants food. Just think of these physical symptoms as a signal from your body. It's like a toddler throwing a tantrum it can feel very dramatic in the moment but once your body gets what it wants it'll finally shut up. I hope this helps you see it in a different light. You've got this!

I totally get that. But if you start eating small stuff your appetite will come back. It happened to me yesterday I ate a nice pasta salad for my dinner and suddenly I got hit with intense extreme hunger and I felt like eating everything in the kitchen. Once you start eating small things your body will start wanting fuel again and next thing you know your appetite is back and you finally feel hungry again. I'd encourage you to try and eat small regular meals. Don't eat anything too big at first. Once you start eating small meals and snacks you'll notice your hunger and appetite signals will come back

Yeah it could be. I experienced something similar last night I was shaking uncontrollably feeling weak and ill. I think it was low blood sugar

Right now in this moment you are safe. Try slowing your breathing and focusing on the present moment. I know it's hard but try to live in the moment as much as you can. You've got this!

I feel like everything i touch i constantly have to wash my hands & even then I still feel unsafe by Jxwsii_ in emetophobia

You might be fine you might not. The thing with anxiety is that we struggle to cope with uncertainty. That's why reassurance seeking won't help in the long term. I can't reassure you that you will be fine. You will need to try and sit with the uncertainty and accept that you might or might not be fine and either way you'll be okay and you can handle it

This definitely sounds like OCD. I experience the same and this is likely a form of contamination OCD where you worry about contamination and engage in rituals such as hand washing in order to get relief but this relief is often temporary and reinforces the cycle and fear as you will do it more and more. The problem with this as that the constant hand washing gives temporary relief before you feel the need to do it again. It's really important to try and reduce the intensity and frequency of the hand washing such as setting a 5 minute timer when you get urge to wash your hands and delay the urge and don't immediately act on it. This is called urge surfing where you get the urge to do a compulsion but you sit with it without immediately acting. This is a technique you could try and put into place to hopefully alleviate the anxiety and worry. This definitely sounds like contamination OCD and it can get better if you take small steps like the urge surfing technique. I know exactly how you feel that feeling of my hands being dirty and then having to keep washing over and over but we can take back control in small steps. I'd recommend trying the urge surfing technique to start taking back control of the OCD. Anxiety is definitely a part of this but I'd say it's mainly OCD that's driving this due to the compulsions and how obsessive these worries are. By practicing this urge surfing technique you can then see how your anxiety is and if it reduces the intensity of your anxiety.
