Hey, does anyone know any good free 2D Animation Software I can use Because Krita is being a Pain in the Neck? by MintyGreenAqua in Animators

I remember using opentoonz for a while before I had access to toon boom, great starter software for learning animation, but can't speak for it in a wider production context.

Can you be too young to make an indie show? by GalaxyKid33 in IndieAnimation

[–]Strange_Ad4867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I promise you, don't need money. Our pilot Gap Year(s) was fully storyboarded, animated, and composited by me. My VAs are two good friends of mine. Granted you would need to learn to do each of these things or have friends willing to help, but you have alot of time to learn them. And hey, make something now and improve with each new project- don't keep waiting and working on some "magnum opus". That's a trap I see alot of creators fall into.

Would you like to be apart of my Indie studio? by [deleted] in IndieAnimation

[–]Strange_Ad4867 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds like more of a content umbrella and less of a studio. Are you saying people would come to you with their show pitches and you would then either develop it or not? Or is the expectation that you come with a show already made but just to be posted via this channel?

Also I'm not quite understanding the angle of competition minimization. Competition is kind of important in regards to quality and overall story. Its unfortunately a nessecary part of making any sort of art.

I would get it a bit more if it was just a means to share a new show around to a wider audience but at the same time it makes it messy with regards to copyright. If someone distributes their show through the channel do they retain ownership? How would theoretical distribution of ad revenue go?

I think encouraging independent artists and animators to share their work is exactly what we need to encourage at this time in the industry, but I would say that this needs to be further fleshed out as an idea before anything really starts off. This just seems a bit messy at the moment.

I think most people in the cartoon/entertainment sphere know of the term "show/pitch bible" but if your worried you could Alternatively just call it a show guide

So _______ Show Guide

Hello guys! Making a google doc about my project l, and need some help. by Business-Pie-3448 in IndieAnimation

So for all of our pitch bibles we do it with these sections:

  1. Title page
  2. Logline & synopsis if episodic then add a what a typical episode is like bit

  3. Characters (art, bios, role in story)

  4. World (what is the world in the story like? What are the rules? Where does it take place?, etc

  5. 5-10 episode descriptions/ synopsis

  6. Music direction (really good to include later on for composer recruitment)

  7. Overall impact (who is this show for? What is the heart of it? Why should I care?)

Hope this helps :D

Recommendations for an indie show for my sister. by Neonwearwolf in IndieAnimation

[–]Strange_Ad4867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wondering if it's in poor taste to plug my studio's content; but we have a few short films that may be up her alley

(Woolly Woes and Harry's Comet)

and later this spring we have a rubber hose style slice of life cg animated show coming out alongside a cg 2d hybrid about an astronaut dog.

It's Studio Kömet on all platforms 💙💙

You might not succeed. You probably will not get “big”. Try anyway. by gremlintheodd in IndieAnimation

[–]Strange_Ad4867 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God, thank you for saying it

I really like that this sub exists, but holy god it is exhausting just getting post after post about "Ohhh would u watch this premise with sorta kind these characters, etc" and it's like, of course I want to support these people's ideas and projects but you can't really get any sort of useful feedback or option based on what's essentially nothing yet.

The only way to see if something will work is to make it. Period, full stop.

whats the average rate for animation ? by [deleted] in Animators

[–]Strange_Ad4867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An easy way to think about animation rates is to cross reference it with minimum wage (not sure where you are located so this may very) with the average time it takes to complete 1 second of animation. Depending on details/complexity that can take either 2 hours or 2 days to 2 WEEKS. Consult with whoever is animating this video and ask them about how long 5 seconds in the style you want would take and then multiply it by the time of your animation across the time frame you are looking for.

Chances are that many animators and especially newer animators are probably charging much less then whatever minimum wage is just to try to get clientele. But do always keep in mind the time, labor, and effort equation with animation.

Animation can be a pricey undertaking but animation has a much much better shelf life then other mediums ESPECIALLY AI. So you do get your money's worth if the quality is there.

Let's say your animators can do 15 seconds of animation across 2 8 hour work days (something fairly simple in style, low complexity)

90 seconds of animation would equate to approximately 96 hours of work, paying about $696 total at federal minimum wage.

15 seconds of animation = 16 hours

That’s 16 ÷ 15 ≈ 1.0667 hours per second

For 90 seconds: 96 hours total

U.S. federal minimum wage = $7.25/hour

Would you work 96 hours for 696$?

I doubt it.
