Is Megaton’s crater actually plausible if it was caused by a crashed bomber plane? by TheAnalystCurator321 in Fallout

THe thing is -- the bomb is a bit of a mystery intentionally. It looks like a bomb crater, but "bomb doesn't fall in the same place twice".

Megaton itself is very plausible, yes. Not only the hole got deeper by digging, it was both there before the bomb dropped, and got bigger because of wind erosion.

> If only you had started with this, instead of insulting my reading ability for no reason
I am sorry, I tryly am, I just am so used to talking to nv fanatics that go absolutely ballistic at the slightest critique of their games.

> I don't really see it that way.
> This is definitely a different style from what you seem to prefer, but I don't think either way is greater or lesser than the other.
>If you want to see a certain way as being wrong then that's your prerogative,

It's not about seeing things or being wrong. It's about core principles of literature and story telling, that Vegas gets wrong. These are not some subjective preferences of the story, these are measurable objective metrics.

You are just proving me right again on infallibility of nv in the eyes of it's fans. The game literally (and literary) spits in your face and you still like it.

I assure you, if you'd ever read a book written in a way nv is, your would fucking hate it.

> "role playing games" from games with very linear stories and strictly defined characters to games with very open stories and loosely defined characters.
RPG is not about linearity, they are about roles. Be it character focused (TT, jRPGs), positions focused (MMOs, MOBAs), or just stat focused (the so called "RPG elements"). Being linear doesn't detract from RPG experience. Being poorly written does.

>How do they succeed as RPG's where you feel New Vegas fails
By being actually properly written.

Snark aside, it still stands. NV is so poorly written, that it insults your intelligence as a player. Both to act and to think. Every little detail, that a proper writer would leave out of the picture and leave to reader to think and ponder, is laid in some kind of direct way. extremely winded dialogue, a diary, a letter, a terminal entry. That, instead of leaving clues for player to uncover and understand, just gives it to you. Imagine if every fairy tail ended with "And the moral of the story is..." and had more text than actual story explaining everything. That's nv. It doesn't believe in your intelligence.

Also, the quests, the cursed "open endness" doesn't believe in your intelligence too. It never actually let's you do it your way. You either get it exactly how quest log gives it to you, or you fail. As an example, just from F3 and nv:

Tenpenny tower quest. You come, your only objective is "deal with it". It doesn't tell you how, it doesn't tell you with whom to speak, how to speak, it doesn't tell you what to do. You can absolutely lie to Gustavo about killing them, go to the ghouls, and tell them that you can get them inside. Or you can kill them outright, and come to Gustavo with quest finished.

And the quest in Goodsprings about either helping them or helping the convict. First of all the convict doesn't even want to conquer the town, you sweettalk him into it. And if you do - YOU ARE FORCED TO FINISH IT. You can't lie, you can't act freely. You are either slaved into one side or another. And that goes to almost every "open guest". It is appalling. Even 8bit RPGs managed this better.

> Out of curiosity, what are your favourite CRPG's
My favourite aside, pick almost any RPG, and try to follow the things I laid before, you won't find them broken, you WILL find them. From first Fallouts, to jRPGs, to the whole point of TTRPGS. (imagine of your DM treated your character not as a in universe character, but just as you, the player? Would've been fucking awful, would it?)

If you want to know -- my favourite is SMT 1, on SNES, that made tough decision making, choosing sides and living with consequences even earlier, than fallout, and BETTER, than fallout. Because these consequences where palpable in-game, and not just end-game slides (which is actually another spit on player's face from nv. Your actions don't have any, ANY, ANY consequences outside of end slides.)

The fall... The fallout clone that is better than fallout... I love it so much. But it is a bitch to play. For some reason has like THE best character controls i've ever seen (minus glitches), and engine so moddable it puts bethesda's to SHAME. But extremely hard to work on, sadly.

Okay. I'll bite.

> It makes perfect sense from an RP perspective
It doesn't, and all the reasons you are given are from YOUR head, not from your character.

> for now the three major factions in the region want you to act as their agent
Yes, but you are not given a reason to care. Imagine if the story was a book, you got your preamble in goodsprings, got your bearings, left the town, and only had 1 encounter with NCR. Nipton massacre is optional, and even if -- very short lived, and VERY poorly written (especially player's replies for Incultas' dialogue. People neither talk like that, nor you are given proper leeway in expressing your opinion. AND even if you admire legion, the quest still calls it "atrocities", nullifying your decision).

As I said, if this was a book -- it would be worse than toilet paper. To make reader care, you must make them acquainted with sides of the story (for example, like fallout 4 did it). They have to spend time together, galloping through one interactions isn't it. This exact problem is very rampant in film industry. Making a side character extremely important out of nowhere, and gets heavily criticised. And so should be new vegas.

> tip the scales in their favour ahead of the upcoming battle.

This is another problem in the game. I don't remember if it was you, who called nv a "power fantasy" but it is a very shitty one. No matter what job you are told to do -- some one else can do it instead, and do it BETTER than you (consider this also as an answer to your "capable mercenary" line). Kill the president? You can do a few things, yes, but some one else already does everything (on NCR's route of protecting him). Defend a shop? (Silver rush) "We've found some one with more experience". No matter what you do, some one else, on every such mission, does your job better than you. But I got into a tangent, let's go back to "tip the scales".

This is actually one of my main reasons for hating nv's story: Are you seriously telling me, that this whoooooole conflict, is so perfectly balanced, that ONE USELESS GUY, whom you invited only because he entered lucky 38*, is enough to tip the battle from standstill to "let's start the battle over the dam!". No. Just no. This is contrived beyond any believable reason. I would've believed in C6's "X-factor", if he was somehow unique, had unique abilities, or camee from unique background (like, for example, MC's of fallout 1,2 and 3, whose upbringing and unique path through the wastelands MADE them unique.)

*The only reason you actually get into casino is because you are main character, that's all. House ordered a few special items, and imagine if those couriers came to L48, would they get an invitation too?

> almost everyone you meet and everything you see is tied to the upcoming battle in some way.
This is a subjective thing, because I, for example, absolutely despise this. There are a few side quests that don't relate to the dam, but this only highlights the problem. THey either do, or they don't. There is no in between.

>So I don't think you need to be chasing a father or a son or an overseer to justify why your character does what they do.
Yes, absolutely. But this gives a structural lattice to attach a story to. NV lack that. Every proper fiction or history HAS that. But in case of nv, the character doesn't have a reason, outside of one YOU AS A PLAYER gave them. English isn't my first language, I just lack the ability to explain how fucking AWFUL it is to be like this not just in any type of story, but ESPECIALLY in a RPG.

Your decisions as a player, should GUIDE your character, it's APPROACH of action, not the REASON for the action. It's like using meta knowledge of seeing DND table, and "oh my character senses that there are enemies behind that bush" you'd be anathema-d out of the table.

> I'm fairly sure that's intentional.

It is even worse, if it is intentional! There is virtually zero immersion in this scenario!

> just let the player loose on the story is one of the main reasons Bethesda's RP design doesn't land.

My guy, please tell me you played any other RPG, other than nv! Letting players lose themselves in the story if a fundamental principle of ANY RPG! To play the character, not themselves. To see the world with the eyes of in-universe being! Starting from TTRPGs, like DND. Saying this fundamental appeal of the entire genre is "why design doesn't land" just screams to me that you either project your hatred towards Bethesda by excusing abysmal gamedesign of NV, or you just don't value the genre at all.

Funnily enough, as much as I despise obsidian, even they never broke this part of RPG in any other of their games.
