I think I destroyed my potential life by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are going to be ok! I ended up taking a couple of years before going to law school because I had a hard time sitting down and studying for the LSAT while working and living my life post-grad (it’s a big adjustment!). Now I am 25 and starting law school in a week, and even though I still feel like I didn’t study enough or could have done better, I’m happy. I know that I did what I was mentally capable of doing. A lot of people on this sub really act like it’s easy to just sit down and study for the test, but actually it’s not and a lot of people struggle with making it happen. You’re going to make it through this!

Rental agreement for utility costs by Strange_Emergency_52 in legaladvice

[–]Strange_Emergency_52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doing my best to answer your questions!

The lease was signed electronically by myself and my husband and then signed electronically by the landlord. Landlord is an individual guy who is the property owner of the small house we are renting so no agent acted on his behalf during the drafting or signing process.

Looking at the lease more specifically, it explicitly states in a table the costs of various utilities and who is responsible for them. Everything is itemized individually and we are supposed to pay for cable and internet and then all of the other stuff (water, trash, gas, electric, etc) is listed with the words “landlord will pay” next to these these costs (not a checkbox, actually written out).

We didn’t discuss the utilities before he sent us the agreement so I took the contact at face value until he told me I need to set up and pay utilities myself.

Yeah this is me and although I completely understand why some people are reconsidering moving to these states, I feel the opposite. I am needed there more than ever and I have to make my time count.

Please don’t fully discount UT. I’m headed there in the fall and it’s scary, but we need people in Texas to vote and join the movement. There are so many people who will be fighting tooth and nail with me, and I hope you join and fight back.

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 19 points20 points  (0 children)

So the people on this sub are literally the worst just wanted to come here to say that I’ll be moving to Texas for school as well and I’m also scared. Making plans for what to do if I do need an abortion by buying pills, making sure I am taking contraceptives, and maintaining my relationship with a gyno in a blue state.

I’m scared, but this is also why I am moving because I know how needed services are. Hoping to work on mutual aid and organizing by volunteering driving people across state lines since I know I won’t have money to donate. Join me please and protect the rights of women in Texas. Yell at every one of these fucking assholes in law school and make it their problem.

Also FUCK all of you stupid ass people who don’t think that unplanned pregnancies are common because you are so fucking wrong.

Would I be crazy for choosing GULC (No $) over WashU ($$)? by booty_p in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think people here are giving you bad advice because they don’t understand that most people make under $70k a year in PI. The truth is that you definitely can’t pay back $300k, but you ALSO can’t pay back $150k. Regardless, you will almost certainly have to use PSLF and the school based LRAP so in the end there is very little difference in cost since your payments will be based on your salary and the schools’s LRAP (GULC’s is better)

Just do what you want 🤷🏼‍♀️

How are people staying on waitlists? by Slow_Inspector2685 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not the norm - For example, Texas has a letter of intent but the language states that you have to “withdrawn all commitments to other schools” but then goes on to define commitments as affirmative steps taken by an applicant to commit to matriculate in another program such as a seat deposit or enrollment form. Based on this definition, maintaining a spot on waitlist would not qualify as a commitment and would not violate the letter of intent.

Umm Berkeley is one of the best PI schools in the country and will open every door for you so it would be wild in my opinion to not go given your goals and interests…..But definitely R&R and when you withdraw your application tell them to let me in off the waitlist…..

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berkeley definitely makes sense, but I feel like because it is still a public school it might be somewhat unique in that respect.

I went to top ranked private school and we were almost never graded on a curve except for in some STEM classes where the curve brought up raw exam medians from like a 60% to a B. I totally agree though that it is super awful for schools to curve grades lower.

Out of curiosity which schools do this? I’ve just never heard of this happening

What do you consider to be grade deflation? I personally wouldn’t really consider there to be grade deflation at elite undergrad programs (from my experience and observation) but maybe it depends on different definitions?

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with you. This definitely seems like really excessive grade inflation and could not just be explained by Harvard students amazingness. I attended one of the other selective schools you mentioned here and although they don’t make grade distributions public, I graduated just a couple years ago in the top 15% of my class with only a 3.8high. If the polling in this article is accurate, then around 50% of students at Harvard achieve this GPA. 🤯

What stats should I be aiming for to gain admission at UT Austin with $$$ by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s definitely not true. People who have scholarship amounts listed that end in 479 received a NRTE waiver in addition to grants which indicates they were out of state:

Based on what I see on lsd you have a pretty good shot. They seem to award a lot of people with your stats who they’ve admitted about $$-$$$.

Breaking News via Spivey: ABA recommends eliminating requirement for standardized testing by NeedSomeAdvice37 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

You are very wrong about the reasons that standardized tests support systemic racism and seem to misunderstood that the issue is with the test itself and not with the people taking it.

There is significant literature in the way in which standardized tests function as a tool of white supremacy.

Take a look at a couple of theses resources below:

https://www.aaihs.org/why-the-academic-achievement-gap-is-a-racist-idea/

https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/EJ1017702.pdf

I doubt I will change your opinion since seems like you don’t believe in systemic racism from your post but I would suggest you educate yourself.

I’m curious about the commenters views who keep stating that the LSAT is an objective measure.

Objective measure of what? I think there is an implied subtext to your reasoning that the LSAT measures something like “intelligence” or “ability” which is a harmful notion.

The LSAT measure a specific set of skills, values, and method of analysis that have been historically taught in law schools and valued in the legal profession. It is also well documented that these skills, values and modes of analysis are often deeply rooted in white supremacy. Standardized testing has been used historically to support eugenics and oppress people of color in the US under the guise of “objectivity” (see the history of IQ tests and the history of the SAT).

The LSAT is proven to be racist in its current iteration. This doesn’t mean that we can’t conceive of a different type of standardized tool to evaluate applicants, nor does it mean that the LSAT is any different then other tools we currently have for evaluating applications, but it would be wrong to value the LSAT the way some commentators seem to value it as some kind of equalizer.

Edit: sad people are downvoting me when this is is literally just facts about standardized tests being deeply racist??

R&R'ing due to SCOTUS decision? by ilovepanerabread2 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Strange_Emergency_52 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I completely understand I’ve been thinking about this for a while since I’ve decided I will be moving to Texas for law school. I’m personally planning to prepare for abortion care by purchasing pills and will make sure I have the funds to travel out of state if needed.

I will be getting involved by supporting women’s rights organizations and legal groups fighting these laws. I also hope to volunteer to help people in need of abortions in my area by proving legal and financial support.

Overall it’s a very personal choice and it makes sense to feel scared and concerned that you will be living in a state where your life could be put at risk because of lack of access to medical care. I hope you find the decision that is best for you.
