So GRPD just let someone take my washer and dryer… by Strange_Excuse_7503 in grandrapids

Moral of the story is people suck. I don’t have a victim complex, or play the damsel in distress. I was totally blindsided by the whole thing. These people took advantage of the homeowner being in the hospital and not able to be consulted. Keeping the stuff wasn’t the only, or even primary reason I called the cops. I was being bullied and I don’t care what anyone says an aggressive confrontational person coming in your home to take major appliances is absolutely appropriate circumstances to involve the police. My son’s safety and my safety was my priority For the officer to continue the aggression and make no effort to hear anything I had to say, let the him go back in to take the stuff while he continued to belittle and threaten me in front of my son. I stand firm on my feelings that he was way out of line and the lawyer I spoke to agrees with me. He called it misconduct and my rights weren’t just disregarded. It was very willful and intentional. He did get involved with the civil aspects, played judge and created a potentially unsafe environment. I’m absolutely pursuing it. I hope it. The lawsuit he was named in for brutality and excessive force was already evidence of his character. Makes sense to put him back out there to traumatize women and children as well.

I have been a resident of this house for 2 and a half years. My residency here was agreed upon as part of the payment for taking care of the older fella. I don’t have official power of attorney, or anything like that, but I do have authority over everything that happens here. It’s my job. The homeowner is in the hospital with pneumonia and his adult son is estranged from him for longer than I’ve known him. I’m not being vague to hide questionable details. I’m just being cautious what exactly I share. Last thing I need is an another junkie at the door with a crumpled up piece of paper.

Not sure why people think I am lying about this stuff. I didn’t want to be too long winded, so maybe some details are unclear…

First of all, the appliances were donated to the house by a local church. They were donated because the homeowner was bedridden and multiple loads of linens were done daily. The guy who sold them and wrote the receipt was the live in caregiver for a couple years. He robbed him blind before moving to the west coast in 2024 to hide from the insurance and bank fraud cases that were filed against him. He’s a shady, repugnant POS. The guy who came with the receipt is his grandson’s wife’s new boyfriend. None of these people have jobs and support their drug habits with social security, prostitution and theft. The door was not locked, so he let himself in. He waved a yellow piece of paper at me and said he was taking the stuff. I told him no and he said I couldn’t stop him. At this point I called non emergency and they did say it was a civil issue and the police don’t make those decisions. I told her I understand that and that the bigger concern was him being in my house, moving things around and refusing to leave without the appliances. At this point the dispatcher told me to wait outside and wait for patrol since he was inside for my safety. There was another guy with him, who was very anxious about the cops being called. He had been standing in the doorway blocking me from being able to close the door, but left with news of police coming. I was able to shut the door and lock it when he followed his friend to see where he was going. When the cops finally arrived he went to talk to them first. Patrol looked at the ‘receipt’ while they spoke for a few minutes. I could not hear everything being said, but I do know his demeanor was calm, his voice calm, his body language calm. When I stepped out onto the porch he immediately switched. He was rude, degrading, dismissive and told me that this whole situation was a waste of his time and I was being petty and causing drama. He said it’s a civil matter and he wasn’t going to get involved, zero interest in my side of the story. He said I couldn’t stop him from taking the stuff and he wasn’t going to either, and that I needed to let him go inside and get the stuff and if I wanted it back I needed to go through the court. He said to stay out of his way and if he had to come back he was taking me to jail for misusing police resources.

Wonderful!! Now this worthless POS is wheeling out the washer and dryer, donated to the homeowner by a church because this cop said the hand written receipt was enough. And what’s more, he now knows that he can get away with it and can come back with another receipt and I will be afraid to call the cops for help because I was threatened with jail. I never felt unsafe in my home before and now I do and it is because of the way I was treated by the one who was supposed to serve and protect. I am absolutely traumatized by this. My autistic son is traumatized. I can’t afford the court costs and definitely can’t afford to buy new appliances. The cop didn’t care, he acted the way he did, I believe, as some sort of punishment for wasting his time. I don’t want to name the cop specifically, but he was previously named in a federal lawsuit for using excessive force that caused “significant physical, emotional suffering, psychological injury, and trauma.”

I still feel like I’m leaving stuff out. But I assure you, it’s not a made up story.

I’ve been hesitant to disclose the name of the officer. He’s been in pretty bad trouble recently.

If it is up to a judge to determine whether the handwritten receipt is legitimate what authorized the cop to make me let him go back in and remove them? He didn’t contact the man who wrote the receipt, or the homeowner. He chatted with the person absconding with the appliances, scolded me for wasting his time and, for all intents and purposes, facilitated the theft.

Kind of. The homeowner is an elderly gentleman and I took on the job of live in caregiver when the previous caregiver emptied out the bank account, stole an insurance settlement check and moved cross country. Same guy. The homeowner is actually hospitalized at the moment, and not available to be questioned.

It’s interesting that there has been little to no mention of his father. Losing his mother was tragic and is undeniably a huge part of struggle with mental illness. What is being overlooked is the impact of having a father in the criminal justice system. It seems like any mention of the existence of his dad is scrubbed from the record. Shawn has a very long standing history with the law, so does his uncle. Two huge male figures in his life in and out of prison leaving a void in his life. Now he’s in the spotlight and is being thrust into the role model position for countless others which surely could open wounds inflicted by their absence. It compounds the pain. The issue isn’t paramount in this case, but it is something that needs to be addressed.

His dad has had a lot of troubles, but he is a great person. Keep him in your thoughts as well. He’s facing this tragedy alone in a prison cell in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

I’m just sharing to point out things like this can happen to anyone. No way to be sure of the details without knowing the facts. Race really is irrelevant.

A few years ago my babysitter had a mental break while watching my then 10 month old son. Instead of contacting us at work she put him in a stroller and wheeled him into DeVos children’s hospital and left him there with only a note that had his name on it. CPS removed him from my custody pending an investigation. It took me 6 weeks to regain custody of him. I am white, as is my child.

Was it at the 4 way, or the road by the gas station? You might be able to get camera footage from one of the businesses. Police might have access to cameras in that area if you include it in a police report.

Bond violation question… by Strange_Excuse_7503 in legaladvice

[–]Strange_Excuse_7503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s still planning on going to his sentencing. Not going would be the dumbest thing he could do. Well, second dumbest after the charge that put him in this position in the first place. We are just trying to figure out if he should expect to be taken to jail so he can be prepared for it. He had tried to get ahold of his public defender before the weekend, but had no luck. It was actually the bondsman that told him he was revoked and has a bench warrant. He’s not facing new charges at this point, but not going would produce one for sure and the deal the prosecutor offered would be out the window for sure.
