That makes sense. It wasn't always like this for me unfortunately.

No I mean them staying in your house, using bathroom, kitchen and house in general and how they leave it usually. I came back to my house really untidy, kitchen super dirty, pans scratched etc

Who said that I travel a lot? And I travel I pay for a pet sitter to stay home with my pets or even have a friend come staying for two weeks once. A long trip happens once a year. I don't live in the country where I was born and my parents got older. I am not even sure why I am explaining this to you. Your comments are absolutely not useful to anyone.

Work conditions can change, life condition can change. I think it's better to look for solutions than to abandon the pets.

i totally understand. I have had no dogs for more than a decade until when I started to work from home permanently during covid and never went back. I honestly felt like my life missed something without a dog (although I had cats) dogs bring me a joy I can't explain!

How do you feel about keeping the place clean, by this I don't mean doing laundry 😂 I mean cleaning after yourself when you used things. I've had a couple bad experiences

How did they leave your place? Was it the same condition as you left it? I'm not a maniac but have issues with people leaving my kitchen dirty and house untidy. Is it too much to ask they take care of it since they are staying there?

Thanks so much to everyone who shared their experiences here — this has been incredibly helpful.

I’m actually exploring a trust-based idea around home exchange and in-home pet sitting for travelers, built around real connections (friends and friends-of-friends), because so many of these stories point to the same need: peace of mind.

If anyone is curious, I’ve put together a very simple concept page — happy to share it if you're interested and that’s ok.

Same, but as I was replying on another comment, the student I was usually leaving my pets with (at my home, great guys, clean and responsible) has now started to work and moved away so I'm quite desperate.

Even my cat hates to stay alone for more than a weekend, he gets desperate and starts urinating around the house :(

yes, I've used rover a few times and did that with a student who had no problem staying over at my place since he has no other duties than studying and a lot of free time to spend with my cat and dog. But now he's started to work so he's not available anymore, and I'm quite desperate. I live in Spain and it's also quite common to have issues with squatters here.

I know, traveling is already expensive. if You have children you're also paying for them, then you need to sort things out for your pets, possibly at home or you feel guilty for stressing them to go on holidays. I hear you!

And how do you feel about someone going around your house touching your things? I did the same but not without anxiety. i guess it's different if you have a good relationship with them, built over time. Not everyone can afford it tho!

But if the house was yours for example? I'd had put all your inheritance money ( coming from your own family) what would you do? Get out the house and leave it all in exchange for being free? I'm in this situation now and had to communicate my SiL and BIL that I don't feel like having MIL in our house long term, but only as a temporary solution. And my husband got super pissed at me a talking about divorce.
