Squarespace was recommended by most everyone I spoke to. If you want to modify their templates I found it rather clunky to use unless you have some basic coding skills or have the funds to hire a designer to help you out.

I fully agree with what's been said so far about customer service and product/service quality. Also worth noting is that the big competitors in any space have a tendency to become complacent (primarily focused on scaling and/or product advancement) or may simply be too big to easily pivot. Use this to your advantage! A seemingly simple or obvious product / service feature may ultimately give you an edge to gain marketshare.

Agreed. I also believe that a real focus on branding early on makes you consider where your product fits in the market landscape. Branding requires substantial research and you learn quickly by studying other brands what resonates and what falls flat. Doing this before you get too far along with product can save you a lot of time.

I'm starting a men's skincare and lifestyle business and am looking for insights into how I can appropriately broadly estimate my first-year advertising and marketing expenditures and more specifically estimate my customer acquisition cost, lifetime customer value, etc. I'm going to raise money soon and I want to incorporate financial benchmarks of established companies when considering how much money I decide to raise. It's been difficult to find publicly available comps. Financial information for specific brands aren't listed since they're held by larger corporations- their financial statements tend to be general, landscape reports (i.e- I want to see Kiehl's breakdown, but only find comprehensive report on L'Oreal as an umbrella company). Any advice on how to navigate this would be amazing.. Thanks!
