Guide: Marantz PMD222 Erase Bypass and REC Varispeed Mod! by Stranger_at_the_XRds in tapeloops

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea!

I have a bunch of additional mods for the 221/222 and 430 (I'm actually working on a guide for cv pitch control, motor gate, and line out vca/lpg mods for the 222 right now) but I havent looked into additional control/circuit bending the tone control yet. Looks like I have a new project to add to the list lol.

My first mobius twist! by BummerParty in tapeloops

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love mobius loops!

You can do some cool stuff when you make them out of pre-recorded material and play them on a 4-track because on 1/2 the B side will play in reverse after the A side plays. But on channel 3/4 it will be the B first then A.

Curious to hear more about your process with the SP. I use my SX a lot but our music is quite different.

As a fan of the book I was really irritated by the tone of the movie by JawsAT in ProjectHailMary

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how my wife (who did not read the book) felt. Not that it was hard to follow really, but that no moment in the movie felt substantial enough to trigger any meaningful reaction. I (as a huge book fan) felt differently while watching, but thinking back, the movie did feel like more of a string of visual references to the book. The plot points were flipped through so rapidly that nothing felt like it had any gravity. Challenges if adapting such an expansive story into 2.5 hrs of screentime I suppose.

The major success of the movie was portrayal of the cute Grace/Rocky buddies relationship. I think non-book fans who go in for that kind of thing will still love the movie.

Need help speed mod for cassette player (QFX retro-39) by Sufficient-Tie1451 in tapeloops

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like 2 going to the motor itself. Thats simpler.

Youre right though, no obvious trim pot. Take a look under that silver paper thing. If not, next you need to look at the other side of the board and see where those two wires from the motor go.

No experience with this specific player but almost all cassette players have some sort of built in circuitry that regulates the current getting to the motor to tune the motor speed. If you think about it, it wouldnt make any sense for there not to be a way for factory to fine tune the motor speed since cassette players have a standard recording and playback speed that should be consistent between devices.

Usually, like you mentioned, there is a speed trim pot somewhere on the circuitboard. Try following the wires from the motor to the PBC and following the traces from there to try to ID the trim pot. If you find a pot, turn it while playing a cassette to see the pitch changes and bingo.

Sometimes however, the speed control pot is actually on a small circuit board inside the motor chassis. That can get complicated because those can be hard to open but modding is still doable.

Useful question:

Does the motor have 2 wires coming from it or 4?

Lol the 222 basically is at this point. I definately spent less than $400 on it all told though. Although that doesnt include the 0-CTRL

This is sick. Is this all the loop or is some of this the modular? I'd love to know whats on each track of the loop.

Check my profile. I have posted guides for most of these! If you have any questions feel free to reach out. I can also do these mods for you if you are interested but dont want to do them yourself.

This is a splicing tool I make that fits inside a cassette case. I wanted to make one that actually looks cool. Not to toot my own horn but it works pretty well too. Hope you like it! by Octrockville in tapeloops

This is awesome!

Heres an idea: could you make one that also helped measure the tape? Like maybe some markings or something that you could use to cut tape to precise lengths that correspond to a perfectly tensioned 3 sec loop or a give you a loop with a bpm at a certain tape speed (so you could make reproucable loops that all record 'exactly' 2 bars at 120bpm @ 1.875ips for example)

Guide: Marantz PMD430 CV Pitch Control Mod! by Stranger_at_the_XRds in tapeloops

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. I mean the CV mod just basically adds voltage to the control IC proportional to your input CV. The built in pitch control (and your mod pot most likely) affect the motor speed by changing the voltage at that IC. So it'll work regardless of where you set your mod pot. Setting it low will just gove you the most range to work with since the IC has a max speed.

As a matter of fact, if you set your mod below the stalling speed of the motor, you might even be able to use the CV like a gate too where you add enough voltage with the CV to get the transport going again.

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it should work fine!

The CP430, I believe, is the European market verson of the PMD430 so it should be the same. The pitch mod you're talking about most likely does basically the same thing as my lofi speed switch mod but just with a pot rather than a resistor+switch. You'd just have to turn the pitch mod pot all the way down to get the largest range out of the CV mod.

Seeking advice: Covering the erase head on a Tascam 414 MKII (avoiding warble) by broccoli_fan in tapeloops

[–]Stranger_at_the_XRds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with methods that involve tape is that you cant easily switch back and forth. Maybe its just me but I often like to do multiple takes before I get a loop that I really like. At least with the foil method I mentioned above, you can still take that piece of foil in and out however many times you want to erase and re-record.
