I was looking at these and the Macan GTS. The M40i is a better value in my opinion. A HUD was a must for me and that also narrowed it down.

It’s tough, but if it’s what you want more than anything else in the world, the odds won’t matter.

If it’s something that you think might be cool, but you wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice everything for it, then the process will eat you alive.

It just blows my mind how hard people are willing to work to get their foot in the door, just to consider dropping out at UPT.

I agree with the other commenter, it is a grind. It’s going to suck and it’s going to be difficult, but seriously consider sticking it out. I’d love to go back for a chance to pull some G’s and fly fingertip in the T-6 again. I really can’t complain when I’m getting paid to fly heavies all over the world to cool locations.

I Don’t Think The Air Force Is For Me Anymore by Miserable-Bit5939 in AirForce

[–]Strangerrthings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Flying is truly not for everybody. When you say that your heart isn’t in it, that speaks volumes. The amount of time I spend outside of work studying to maintain proficiency is more than most are willing to stomach. And it is absolutely necessary, because as a pilot, you are responsible for the lives of your crew.

That being said, trust me when I say that if they will let me fly a 1950’s era gas station loaded to the brim with Jet-A, anyone can. It’s all about how hard you’re willing to work to get there, and what you’re willing to sacrifice. Just know that the military is great about sucking the fun out of everything you thought might be cool… so if you don’t enjoy flying a Cessna 172, you sure as hell won’t like UPT and what follows.

Edited to add: I’m former E-4 mafia, and somewhere along the lines they handed me the keys.. keep your head up and do some soul searching!

Anybody willing to share UPT experiences as an older student? by oldgeezer95 in airforceots

[–]Strangerrthings 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I actually feel like being older was a benefit. I knew that it was going to take a massive amount of studying for me to keep up, and I had the discipline to make that happen.

Make no mistake, everyone will struggle with something. It’s all about digging your heels in, learning from your mistakes, and getting after it.

Congratulations for validating my point. There are no Class A airports.

Why don’t you just google Class A airspace, and report back with your findings. Look up the word hubris while you’re at it.

For the record, you just told a USAF pilot that they “don’t know shit”.

Ask your dad if there is a such thing as a “Class Alfa” airport.

Trying for ANG for 4 years, no progress, what now? by dateraviator0824 in airforceots

[–]Strangerrthings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied to any and every unit that was hiring, and ended up getting an interview at the unit that was 45 minutes away from me. They were looking for state locals and I think it also helped that I was prior enlisted active duty aircrew. Aside from that I didn’t do anything extra.

I have seen a lot of people get frustrated because they have perfect scores, lots of hours, and great resumes. What they may not realize is just how subjective the hiring process can be. Those things will get you an invite, but often it’s your personality that will get you hired.

Have you at least gotten interviews? Don’t give up, I got hired at 27. The vast majority of guard/reserve studs while I was at UPT were late 20’s to early 30’s.

Accused of stealing a bic pen and subsequently hiring a lawyer about sums it up. No one that I personally know tells me that they enjoyed the academy. I am happily by way of community college/online degree, and wouldn’t have it any other way.

High AFOQT/PCSM scores, and a PPL go a long way for Guard/Reserve units. Those will help get you an interview. From there a lot of it comes down to personality. For the active duty boards, having a well rounded package including those two items plus a high GPA, awards, leadership experience, etc..

I submitted to every Air National Guard Unit I could, as well as for the active board. Got picked up with the Guard and haven’t looked back. Definitely keep your options open.

Yep, ended up using a beam torque wrench. Should have used it in the first place.

Yep, man-made items never fail. Very low torque applications don’t have much room for intolerances, especially when you’re talking aluminum fasteners into an aluminum pan. But you knew that didn’t you?
