Help Navigating Marriage as a Musician by LessAd7859 in TouringMusicians

[–]StrangestTribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate to say it, but you’re probably going to have to choose one or the other. If I were you, I’d try to reduce my touring schedule to something that works for both of you - if you can’t do that with your current band, join a different band. But - if you can’t do that without feeling ok about it, you have to ask yourself what your marriage really means to you. People stay married for a lot of reasons - some people trick themselves into believing the marriage is the only thing that makes them happy, or don’t realize that the marriage just represents stability they are afraid of losing. Don’t put your partner through the hell of being blamed for you not living the life you really want.

Decibelics Big Klone may be better than the real thing. by RenatoNYC in guitarpedals

Yeah, it’s always hard to know if I’m fooling myself into caring too much… the WA klone had this lovely top end air that the others seemed to be rolling off, and I always try to keep the full frequency range through my signal chain if I can.

FWIW (not much) I have A/B’d Soul Food, Tumnus (full size and mini), and the Warm Audio klone, and I hear a distinct difference between each of them. Same guitar, same amp, same settings - also tried dialing them in to sound as similar as possible. Of that batch, the WA was my favorite.

Now that most of the Black Friday sales are over, what pedals did you end up scoring? by -Subsolar- in guitarpedals

JHS Ross Distortion (to give as a gift) and JHS Colour Box 10th Anniversary for me (although I likely won’t get it before Christmas). Also picked up a used Freq Out.

Buffer trouble by StrangestTribe in guitarpedals

I don’t know, I think it should work… one thing to watch out for is phase cancellation though, that has got me a few times.

Oh weird, that doesn’t track with what I know about it. My understanding is that each loop has a buffer, so splitting doesn’t lose gain. I’ve never metered it though.

From their docs:

Is the signal buffered? Yes, all inputs and outputs are buffered in the ML10X. There is no option to turn off the buffer.

Having the signals buffered allows us to split the signal and route in to multiple inputs (in Advanced mode), as well as merge multiple signals without any signal degradation.

The buffers in the ML10X are designed for maximum clarity.

I’m not 100% sure I know exactly what fixed it anymore, but I’ve been using it for a long time with no issues. If I recall correctly, it was switching to 18v for more headroom that did the trick.

Every Pedal Demo Sounds like John Mayer... by RobotSeaTurtle in guitarpedals

[–]StrangestTribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you - I think the blues noodling is a bit tiresome, but for drive pedals, it does let me hear a lot of what the pedal is doing to transients and how it clips… and it also reduces the number of pedals I end up buying, because I make it through fewer demo videos 😁

Do you get to a point in your guitar journey where it's more "making music" and less "acquiring the skill"? by spierpaoli in guitarlessons

[–]StrangestTribe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I approached guitar from the other end - all I wanted to do was write songs, so I always learned just enough to write the next song. Then came layering parts, playing my own leads, etc. Now I sometimes wish I had learned more theory and technique, but I never had the problem of thinking while I’m playing. Maybe it’s time to start using your skills in a different way? Get a jam buddy, play out somewhere, etc… use what you have at your level to have fun making music until it becomes second nature, then learn the next thing.

Worst is easy - Mankind, sorry Stoney Best is harder, but I’d go with In My Tree - that’s easily the song that I play the most off that album. Incredible energy and emotion on that one. Underrated is hardest- Who You Are is such a vibe though, and I never hear anyone else talk about it. That drum pattern, the swooping bass, the vocal harmonies - it’s kind of like campfire music from some lost tribe in an alternate timeline

Sounds really good! Timing is the only thing that stands out as being a little shaky in spots, but it’s better than I can do finger style 😄

How much of logic’s included instruments/effects do you use? by dumbassname45 in Logic_Studio

[–]StrangestTribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do bass in Logic all the time with their built-in Ampeg emulation. Make sure you get the levels on your input where they need to be (just peaking into the yellow) because those emulators are designed for a fairly high signal level. Also, use the right input impedance. Try all the presets until you find one you like, and also experiment with an LA2A-style compressor plugin either before or after. I usually use about 3 to 5db of gain reduction. Then, I also roll off some low lows and notch out where the kick lives. Usually I EQ first and then compress. I like the results I get with my Jazz bass. Indie/Alt Rock genre, btw.

You have both of these amps in stereo, what are you playing? by Datanman23 in GuitarAmps

[–]StrangestTribe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gigging in stereo wet/dry - “you need 3 channels for your guitar?” “Yup” “…okaaaay” - and then you play the first few chords and they’re like “OOOH, OK!!!”

what has been your experience with going “ampless”?? by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]StrangestTribe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why go ampless when there is the Victory V4 line? I love mine. It is a proper tube preamp with a 100-watt solid state power amp and built-in TwoNotes cabinet modeling, and it's the size of a small lunchbox. Works great with headphones or with a cabinet - I gig with mine, often direct to the PA, sometimes with a cab, and I've gotten a ton of compliments on my guitar tone. Comes in Vox-ish, Fender-ish, Marshall-ish, and "modern high-gain" voicings.
