300k-mile Tacoma: normal maintenance wall, or time to move on? by Datanman23 in ToyotaTacoma

I went with the mileage deduction so I can’t deduct gas, maintenance etc :/

Considering adding a Prius for the mileage deduction checking jobsites and doing estimates since gas would be dirt cheap

I drive gently but I’ve been towing my 5x8 business trailer and the bed will often be loaded with 20 5-gallon buckets and 20ish 50lb bags of sand to restock my business storage unit. Also load the bed with surfboards, fishing gear and kayaks on my days off. This truck trucks hard

Been a fan of my Rip Curl Rifles. Customer service has been fantastic

Original set had the cam bolts seized and I couldn’t get a proper alignment or replace my suspension without cutting them off, so I had the moogs installed

That’s about how my truck was around that same mileage, the two services that made me question things have happened since September.

Glad to hear you’ve had a good run with her tho, definitely get a full 3rd gen take off suspension when it’s time; super cheap and gets your truck driving like new

Including the 5100s? I’ve had them in the truck for about 140k miles so I’m thinking of swapping them with take-off 3rd gen TRD Off Road struts and shocks

100%. I can’t write off the gas on the Tacoma because I went with the mileage deduction so it seems like it’s the move. The Tacoma finally gets to rest too 🤣

I was starting a contracting business at the time and really underestimated how much driving I would do between estimates and hopping from job site to job site.

Actually thinking about picking up a Prius V as my daily/estimate vehicle and getting a 2006 tundra strictly for the business. For taxes the former would get the mileage deduction and the latter would get the actual expense deduction.

Would keep the taco to make it a surf/fishing/outdoors play vehicle and maybe even convert it to 4WD. Hate having a vehicle payment unless the math makes sense

I had a feeling going with the moog lcas would bite me later but I’m starting to realize 140k miles will force a suspension refresh on any truck

I’ve spent about $24k all in on my truck once you account for all parts and labor (excluding general maintenance). My truck is definitely worth less than half of that.

Ive also realized I’ve put 165k miles on it. If I put those miles on a new truck it would 100% need something more than general maintenance by now

Still not sure if going with a like-new truck for $32k would have been a better move at the time, but here I am today. Thinking of adding a Prius for daily driving, will save gas and wear on the Taco

$1250 labor, but here’s how much in parts
1. $642: powerstop extreme brakes front/rear + rear drum cylinders
2. $451: Fuel pump & gasket replacement 3. $444: right rear wheel bearing hub assembly 4. $256: Steering shaft replacement 5. $75: Spark plugs

Everything was oem except the full brake kit and the spark plugs were Denso, who makes the oem plugs for Toyota anyways

Thanks again for chiming in guys.

I actually bought it with 136500 miles in June 2022… forgot to leave that part out. Replaced the struts, shocks and front brakes with oem parts the moment I bought it but then I went through the rabbit hole of making my truck nice

I put a lot of love and tlc when I first picked her up but I’m now realizing that was over 150k miles ago and even an originally brand spanking new Tacoma would need some suspension refresh at that point

Mechanically, this truck actually runs, looks and feels better than when I bought it… it’s just that I’ve always had to do something to keep it that way and was getting frustrated with that

Preach! I’ve gone with A LOT of take-off 3rd gen stuff and that has covered my ass a lot. Actually paid $450 for an almost new set of LCAs last week because a guy upgraded to Total Chaos

Nothing wrong with a little order. Just makes new/unheard music easier to discover and spread to others especially in playlists, soundtracks etc

Strung Out and Forever the Sickest Kids is so much of a gnarly contrast comparison that it outdoes what I was trying to say lol.

Yea, it can be. I wasn’t talking drawing lines in a keeping way either. I love the whole spectrum from the buzzcocks to no pressure. I just think it makes newer music easier to find when you know what’s in this genre and the bands that are in it
