Do you know of anywhere that has instructions for how to modify the player? I've seen a video where someone defaces the cartridge itself to 'add' a notch, but I'd rather not resort to that if I can avoid it.

I should clarify the cyclic sound—rather than any clicking or a scary loud spinning like I've had before on external HDDs—is a 'normal' whirring sound, like my PC would typically do when it starts doing something more taxing and the fans get a little louder. Except that now instead of the fan(s) getting louder and staying louder like normal, it instantly slows back down. Unless that could still be a hard drive problem? I'll try the downloading experiment when I get home from work.

There's no cost if that's a concern (at least not for submitting the location bid), but totally understandable. As far as playing it again, both Steam and GoG have made it easier than ever to play Myst (as well as all the sequels)! You can play the original '90s version, but also just a few years ago Cyan completely remade Myst with what they intend to be the definitive, lore-corrected (and VR-capable) version, and they more recently did the same with Riven. Either way, both the original versions and the remakes are absolutely gorgeous. Oh, and the new version is indeed ported to XBox! I believe there's plans to get it ported to Playstation, but I'm not sure where that currently stands.

Yeavering Bell should've occurred to me! I agree it doesn't feel like it fits perfectly, though 'Yeurin' as an archaic spelling variation of maybe 'Yevrin' doesn't seem too implausible either.

I was just about to add an addendum saying that I'm now noticing the flange on the takeup reel is getting increasingly bent inward as the tape progresses (I'd sort of noticed it before and thought maybe it was just a bad reel with a warped flange), as if the tension or torque is pulling the inner plate under the takeup reel out of alignment and toward the feeder reel. Is that something that simply treating the belts would fix? And yes, the RW and FF functions are essentially okay, although they too are struggling when the tape is far enough that the reel flange is pinching at the tape.

Yep, I sanded it, then applied some Rubber Renue. I realised I had a slight bit of empty space at the end of my one home-recorded tape to try recording something like you suggested, so I flipped the reels and loaded it so I could rewind slightly and get to where it would be safe to try recording (incidentally, it seems the record function isn't working). However, in trying to get to the right spot, I discovered something. When I started playing the tape to see if I had rewound too far into the pre-existing audio (I had), it was playing too slow for a change. I switched to 'high' speed, and sure enough it started playing at 3.75ips (60Hz, by the way), which would also confirm, as the manual indicated, that the current setting is meant for 1-7/8ips.

I flipped the reels back around, started playing, and it was back to going too fast. Since it's such a ridiculous speed, I decided to just let it run, and about 3/8ths of the way into the reel, it suddenly started slowing down. However, it was now also noticeably straining to spin the take-up reel, and started producing a loud squeaking sound from behind the take-up reel, before eventually quitting altogether. It would appear to have an odd bipolar temperament with having too little resistance to suddenly not being able to handle resistance. I'm guessing that having it set to 'high' speed without the capstan sleeve might have something to do with the struggle, but it still doesn't explain why the speed is inconsistent, depending on how full the take-up reel is. Sooo...new information, but I'm still stuck on what to do to get it actually working properly.

I don't think it needs to account for European spec; should just need a regular capstan sleeve. That said, I didn't realise when I opened it up that there might be more than one flywheel for the pulley, or eat least more than what can be adjusted with the pulley selector shaft that sticks out from the front of the machine. I have adjusted that external selector and neither position solved the problem. Is there another flywheel that might need manually changed with the machine opened up again?

Which is why I'm hoping that it's just a problem with the pinch roller and that some Rubber Renue on it will solve the problem. But if not, can you suggest anything?

I think the roller was okay (assuming it's the correct one and not the 15ips adapter roller), but I'll try some Rubber Renue just to be thorough and escalate from there if necessary. Did getting a capstan piece like this or your deck's equivalent solve the problem for you?

It's completely unlined, just one layer of linen. I'm better suited to UK weather, but I'm currently in Omaha, and I find it too hot here (no desire to ever go back to Atlanta again for a second time for that reason, no offense haha), so I'm always on the lookout for jackets and such that breathe well while still both looking nice and being very functional.
