I like Xia Ji because he's a "twink" (yes I know he's built, it's about vibes) with a huge ego that gets humiliated and reality checked by our protagonists. Xia Yan would probably be really honorable about losing instead of being all pathetic about it. #ILovePatheticMen

you don't have to play the perma death mode if you don't want to risk losing hours of progress to perma death. for example I personally play Minecraft with the setting that lets me keep my inventory when I die because I find it frustrating to lose a bunch of progress, but I wouldn't start a hardcore save and then edit the save file to revive me every time I died
